Imagine sleeping tonight and waking up tomorrow morning just to realise that the face you slept with has changed to a face people no longer recognise the following morning. Note because you intentionally changed your appearance but because something beyond your control happened overnight. That is the frightening situation about the horror movie, Clayface which was directed by James Watkins. The movie entails Matt, an upcoming actor whose life took another direction after his face was disfigured by a gangster, then he went to an experimental treatment to restore his disfigured face.
I don't really watch horror movie, but I kind of like this one because after the incident happened to Matt, he was not trying to fight and enemy outside himself. He was also dealing with what has happened to his body.
For an upcoming and aspiring actor whose career depends on how he looks physically, his face getting disfigured means losing more than physical beauty. His identity was changed in a way, it limited his confidence too, and also what he planned ahead. The experiment he went for offered him a hope but at a cost he did not fully understand.
What distinguished Clayface from the usual superhero movie I do watch often is the horror element. Instead of taking the normal colourful villain character and straightforward battle, the movie explores what happened to Matt in a way that he slowly became unrecognisable.
The transformation he went through brought a question about how much how much of a sacrifice some people are ready to do just to regain what they have lost. The desperation Matt has was a concept I totally understand, not because I have done or passed through it, but it is relatable even when all the circumstances surrounding him became extraordinary.
Due to the body horror, it got me so uncomfortable at some point and less enjoyable. For it to have real impact, the emotional side of Matt transformation needs to remain convincing according to my suggestion. And I feel they ought to have limit the tye heaviness they put on the shocking imagery, because it kind of made the character less following while I was watching.
However, Clayface was a good watch due to the fact that it brought together the horror aspect and the personal life of Matt, whose ambition and career became a nightmare. This is a movie I will recommend for anyone who enjoys dark psychology films. It's worth exploring.
