When life is going well, some songs are easier to sing. When we have enough in our pocket, it is easier and more convenient to praise God because everything is going fine; things we once prayed for are working out for the best. But when life takes another turn, what happens? When we pray and those prayers seem not to be answered, we try to figure out and understand why things have become so difficult. This is when God on the Mountain by Lynda Randle speaks to me. When life is no longer going easy and comfortably, it is a song to hold on to faith.
I love the song because of how simple it is, yet it has a powerful message. The song always reminds me that the same God that I trust and who is always there for me during my God days is still present when I am passing through difficult moments. From the lyrics, the valley represents moments of uneasiness, struggles, disappointment, confusion, and uncertainty, while "mountain" easily means moments of easiness and things going on fine. It is a moment most of us are familiar with because life hardly is a bed of roses, and it has bad and good times
Listening to this song, Lynda's voice gave it much impact with emotional weight. She sang it with calmness and clarity and conviction that makes it more reliable and personal rather than the distant feeling. She is something soothing to me about the way she delivered the lyrics.
She did not sound dramatic to pass her message across to get to the heart. She has a gospel life that carries a sense of experience in a way that she understands that having faith in God is not always about having answers to everything. Sometimes, it comes to us in a way that we just need to trust even when we cannot see what comes next.
While listening, it made me think about how easily our faith can be disturbed and disrupted by situations around us. When things are going according to plan, we see God to be close, and when things are not going as planned, different questions seem to be following through our minds. We begin to ask different questions on why we are in that situation, and prayers seem not to be answered. I like this song in particular because it did not say everything will be pleasant. Instead, it shows that during those hard moments we are not abandoned. That message can bring comfort to someone who is quietly carrying more than they let others see.
Another thing I love about this particular song is that to pass its message across, it did not rely on complicated language. There is this directness and memorable moments it carries beyond music. Even though it was sung a long time ago, it still gives a timeless quality anytime I listen. It might not be a song anyone can listen to every time or for complicated arrangements, but its strength is behind the motive and conviction behind the performance.
Personally, I always have this conviction that our faith will always be put to the test when things stop going the way we expected. It will always be easy to talk about putting our faith in God when we have something to celebrate. But it seems to become very hard to continue like that when we are tired of waiting. And in the music, Lynda did a perfect job in delivering the message with a clear sincerity. For anyone passing through good times and difficult moments, it is a song to listen to.
