U.S. President Donald Trump hinted at the possibility that, in pursuing large-scale economic sanctions against Iran, Chinese financial institutions could also be included on the sanctions list.
According to foreign media including The Hill and AFP on the 27th local time, President Trump told reporters at the White House, when asked whether a second round of sanctions would be imposed on Chinese banks, “Who said I’m not doing it?”
Earlier, on the 24th, the United States carried out the so-called “economic bullying operation” to cut off Iran’s cash flow. At the time, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Beshent did not mention any specific country that Iran’s largest trading partner was, but he stated, “No one can escape the U.S. sanctions net.” In response to reporters’ questions, President Trump said, "You don’t know whether I’m imposing sanctions or not," adding, "I don’t need to tell you everything." He said, "Isn't that so?" This remark is interpreted as a warning that if Chinese financial institutions continue transactions with Iran, the United States could impose secondary sanctions. It is also interpreted as remarks intended to pressure China and thereby enhance the effectiveness of sanctions on Iran.
China is Iran's largest crude oil buyer and a major trading partner. AFP reported, “President Trump hinted at the possibility of sanctions targeting Chinese banks linked to Iran,” adding, “This shows that the U.S. is intensifying its efforts to isolate Iran.” Reporter Kim Cheon (kim.cheon@jtbc.co.kr )
I have to act tough, but circumstances aren’t going well, In the end, this is Trump, a situation that can only be resolved with words.
However, it seems that even that will no longer be of much concern to most people.
