Accompanying a degree signing.

This past week, a friend from university made my birthday cake—and it turned out beautifully. Not only that, but she charged me only for the materials and made it larger than I had originally requested as a birthday gift, which really made my day. Seeing her succeed like this reminded me of how she overcame the obstacles that once made her think she’d never graduate—specifically, the struggle with the theoretical side of her thesis. You can see me in the photo accompanying her as she signed the graduation papers; it’s been nearly two years since then, and I still find it hard to believe. She hadn't even fully realized she was graduating at the time, because certain professors had made her feel like she couldn't do it—yet there she was, proving them wrong.

Just as she was there for me when I graduated, I wanted to be present for her event as well—attending both the signing ceremony and the graduation itself. Although I couldn't go inside—as it wasn't permitted—I was there to congratulate her and give her a small gift to mark her achievement. There are many times in life when we doubt our abilities and whether we can actually accomplish something; I certainly include myself in that, having felt that way recently due to everything that has happened—not to mention the situation in the country. Yet, life takes many turns, and it all comes down to believing in yourself and the skills you possess—and can improve. I can tell you that this young woman has proven this time and again; there she is, venturing into the world of baking. She was once terrified to start, worried she wouldn't make any sales, but I’m so glad she didn't back down, because she makes excellent desserts.
