REVIEW (2).gif

Today I’m sharing a very moving anime. I absolutely loved it, even though I knew I’d end up in tears—it’s sad, yet not quite sad (it’s hard to describe the exact feeling). Regardless, I really wanted to give it a chance because of the characters and their interactions; plus, I had already come across a few spoilers here and there. I hope you’ll consider watching it, as it truly is a beautiful story.

Tōmei na Yoru ni Kakeru Kimi to, Me ni Mienai Koi wo Shita

Premiering in July of this year and concluding with a total of 12 episodes, director Joe Yoshizaki and the animation studio Makaria bring us a story filled with romance and slice-of-life elements.

As for the plot…

The story follows Kakeru Sorano, a reserved and introverted university student who tends to keep to himself. However, things change when he is dragged by his dormmate to a welcome party and meets Koharu Fuyutsuki—a visually impaired (blind) girl who stands out for her cheerful, talkative, and positive personality. A genuine and deep connection blossoms between them, but everything takes an unexpected turn when she whispers an almost impossible wish to him: "I want to see fireworks someday."

Driven by a feeling he can no longer contain, Kakeru decides to break down his own barriers and embark on a journey—one steeped in deep sensitivity—to gift Koharu a unique experience that transcends mere sight. Will this introverted boy succeed in transforming the sounds and lights of the night into an indelible memory for the girl who brought him back to life, or will the shadow of an impending farewell dim his light too soon?

Personal opinion

The anime handles the themes of empathy and resilience exceptionally well through the unique perspectives of its characters, allowing you to empathize and connect with them. I appreciate that it avoids rushing the romance or relying on exaggerated dramatic twists; instead, it offers an organic narrative where affection blossoms from mutual understanding. The pacing is perfect, making space for moments of silence, ambient sounds, and small, everyday details—inviting the viewer to experience the world through a more sensory lens, much like Koharu herself.

The core of the plot—Kakeru’s ambitious goal to convey the beauty of a fireworks display to someone who cannot see it—sustains the dramatic tension, maintaining a constant balance between the warmth of their romance and the subtle, looming threat posed by the fragility of his health. The characters feel deeply human: one evolves gradually, driven by an empathy that blossoms into pure love, while the other possesses a cheerful disposition and a mature philosophy on life in the face of her visual impairment.

As for the animation, I also like it; it is handled very well—especially the color palette. Everyday, introspective scenes use cool, desaturated, bluish tones, while moments shared between the protagonists are illuminated with warm, golden hues and pastel glimmers. I also appreciate how empathy is handled: it does not stem from pity, but rather from an active desire to understand the reality of a loved one. The work posits that love and beauty do not depend on sight, but on the capacity to connect with the presence of another person.

Positive points…

  • Sensitivity and respect: It handles visual impairment with impeccable maturity, avoiding any descent into pity or exaggerated melodrama.
  • Genuine character growth: The evolution of Kakeru and the strength of Koharu feel believable, human, and deeply heartening.
  • Authentic chemistry: The relationship is built through small details and sincere conversations, rather than clichés or forced misunderstandings.

image.png Source

Negative points…

  • Measured pace: Its contemplative and tranquil progression may feel slow if you are looking for a plot filled with action or constant twists.
  • Familiar formula: The concept of a withdrawn boy helping a girl with a complex medical condition follows a fairly traditional structure for the genre.
  • Underdeveloped supporting characters: The focus is so heavily centered on the main couple that the rest of the cast remains in the background, serving a largely functional role.

The score I give it…

8.5/10 Story │ 9/10 Animation │ 9/10 Sound │ 9/10 Character design │ 9/10 Overall

It is a story about the power of sincere affection, overcoming adversity, and emotions that resonate beyond what the eye can see; it is an ideal choice if you enjoy intimate, visually beautiful stories that carry a profound emotional impact.

REVIEW (2).gif
