If you ask me why a lot of people are unable to go long hours without their mobile devices, I’ll say the world has evolved and people just find maximum comfort in being on their phones, staying online, and connecting with other people. But if you ask me on a deeper level, I’ll tell you that a lot of people have become way too attached to their devices that they’ve forgotten how to live without them, and it makes me wonder, how did we all get through life when we could barely afford these technological products?
Well, the answer is simple. We had limited access and had no other choice than to get by. But now that we've got phones with nobody controlling how we use them, it becomes easier to just stay dependent on them, especially when there’s an internet that shows us the kind of content that keeps everyone hooked on their screens for long hours.
Personally, I grew up with adults who already had mobile devices, and even though I had limited access, I played games on them until I got mine. Looking back, I can say that having my phone as a teenager without being policed had a long-term effect on me because I became quite dependent on my phone. My only saviour was having to go back to boarding school, which meant that I had to leave it behind for school.
However, that wasn’t enough to solve the problem because each time I returned, my phone became my new obsession all over again. So, I imagine how much worse I could’ve been if I were a teenager in this age, where the internet has expanded to include much more exciting things that make it harder to focus.
Fortunately, I outgrew my attachment to phones and it just happened naturally that I began to feel occupied with other commitments and couldn’t spend my whole day on my phone. This period taught me that there was more to life than obsessing over phones, and even though I could make money and healthy connections using one, I still had to become more intentional about not being dependent on it.
So, if you ask me, I’ll say I understand what it means to go MIA and touch some grass instead of being on my phone all day, every day. Truthfully, I can stay without my device for up to 48 hours, and that’s because I’m not a boring human myself. I love to watch movies, listen to music and dance, make little sketches, paint, take a walk, chat physically with friends and family, read books, and even journal. So, having these hobbies just makes it easier not to rely on my phone.
All these activities are satisfying to me, except for the fact that I may need to take photos or videos of some of these activities. But if I had a digital camera, I believe it would be a non-issue. Regardless, I feel it’s such an amazing thing to be able to stay without our phones. It signals healthy living.
So, if an adult cannot stay without theirs, then it means they have an unhealthy pattern of living. However, people who work round the clock on their devices can be excused, even though it’s advisable that they use their breaks wisely.
I’m probably just excited to always share that I can take breaks from my device despite being a fan of the internet. I mean, spending quality time away from my phone is one of my favourite things, and it’s a good way to experience something different.
If you’re someone who’s heavily dependent on your phone, please go outside and do something else for a change. Sit under the trees at a park, feel the breeze, go watch the birds, reach for the stars, and be a child again. You will be fine without your phone.
