Hello, friends at EmpowerTalent. It’s a tremendous pleasure to join you once again this week to reflect on these initiatives that invite us to look inward. This week’s topic revolves around “The Best Outfit,” and when I read about it, I couldn’t help but think about it from a very personal perspective. Sometimes we don’t realize it, but throughout our lives we find ourselves wearing clothes that aren’t ours: labels, expectations, and, above all, other people’s responsibilities that we agree to carry until the weight suffocates us. Today I want to share my story of how I learned to shed those burdens.
The First Garments: Labels Others Put on Us To tell the truth, wearing these imposed garments is something I’ve dealt with frequently. It’s happened to me that, because of certain gestures I make completely unconsciously or because of my personality, many people end up labeling me at first glance as someone who’s very serious or even distant.
Feeling like you’re a victim of those stereotypes or ideas that have nothing to do with your reality isn’t pleasant. However, over time I came to understand that other people’s opinions are their own garments, not mine, and that I didn’t have to try them on or carry them around. But the real test came when I had to deal with much heavier garments within my own circle.

The Burden of Others’ Stress and the Decision to Let Go A while back, due to family situations, I unwittingly became everyone’s lawyer and mediator. It made me feel terrible to see how other people couldn’t resolve simple issues in their daily lives. So, little by little, I began taking on responsibilities that weren’t mine simply because the person in charge wasn’t doing their part.
I ended up burdened with tasks, conflicts, and tremendous stress that wasn’t mine. Until one day I got tired of wearing a garment that was suffocating me and decided to start letting go. I began making firm decisions: not answering certain calls, not intervening in arguments, and walking out of meetings that were clearly robbing me of my peace.
At first, I was overcome with guilt and ended up on the “bad side” of several people. Overnight, I was questioned and singled out; they said I’d become selfish and labeled me as someone lacking empathy. All I could think was: “Wow, you didn’t see everything I did for you when you needed me; you only saw what I decided not to do when you needed to take on your own responsibilities.”

Despite the bitter pill, standing my ground taught me the most liberating lesson of my life: I realized that life goes on, that no one dies because of you, and that everything flows. Those people didn’t cease to exist, nor did the world stop turning, just because I didn’t solve their problems.
Accepting my “hyperactive adult self,” but within my own limits
Today I understand that this need to be involved in everything and to be decisive is, deep down, part of my personality. I accept that I’m still that hyperactive adult who likes to make sure everything runs smoothly and turns out perfectly. The radical difference is that now I’ve learned to channel that energy solely into what truly belongs to me: my immediate family, my goals, and my well-being.
For example, as the class representative for my youngest son’s classroom, I’m still taking the lead and actively organizing school activities; in fact, right now we’re working on painting and refurbishing his classroom so that when classes start, everything will be in top condition. Similarly, I’m attentive to and committed to my other son’s college plans, my own academic and professional projects, and taking care of my home.

I’m still an efficient, dedicated, and decisive person, even when my actions extend to more community-oriented settings like school, but now everything I do has a clear purpose: it’s focused on my family and my peace of mind.
My Ideal Attitude
I realized that there’s nothing wrong with being passionate or wanting to help; what was wrong was putting on roles that weren’t mine, roles that only filled me with useless bitterness. Today I know that my best outfit is peace of mind combined with the satisfaction of giving my best to those who truly value me and reciprocate that love. I’ve learned to say “I can’t” or “this is as far as I go” outside my inner circle, so I can proudly wear only the clothes that fit me perfectly.
Thank you to the community for this beautiful initiative that allows us to unburden ourselves and share such real experiences. And you—what clothes or burdens belonging to others are you ready to let go of today? I’ll read your comments!
