[Movie] Reviw: Hamnet (En-Es)

Who has to suffer through the burdens of a genius while this person carries out their work? For years we have heard of the women who are behind those great genios; those who had to cook, feed the children, wash the clothes, and even sustain the home while these men were busy with the great works that we all enjoy and for which we congratulate them without thinking many times that, for all of that to happen, there was someone who needed to be connected to real life and make it work. Why not? You cannot eat on inspiration alone. Just by chasing muses, one cannot sustain a home, both economically and sentimentally, and this last part is what this movie, Hamlet, talks about.

During this film, we follow a young girl who is very connected to nature and who has a fascination similar to what was attributed to witches because of this element, with the forest being her safe place and where she could truly express her true self. In this context, a young master is introduced because, despite this young woman's connection to nature, she does belong to an affluent family. This instructor in a certain way clashes with this young woman's way of living, but there is a mutual fascination. One that, even though both are in complicated scenarios, both family and social ones, and although nobody seemed to truly agree with their marriage, takes place.

From here, a dizzying movie kicks off, where perhaps the silences and these natural lights or the quality of the candles tell a story that cooks on a slow flame on the surface, but that we truly know always has many things happening on an emotional level. The husband, as he is called in the movie, tries to bring his creations forward while supporting his family. For this, he has to go far away, and a series of family burdens falls upon the woman that she was not used to resolving. Little by little we see how she loses her connection with nature, and only in punctual moments is she able to return to it and feel truly free. This is evidenced in the birth of the first of their children.

Who is going to be born in the forest? She flees to give birth in this environment, something that contrasts with the birth of her second son, who does take place in this sort of captivity that for her represents the home of her in-laws. Upon getting her own house and disconnecting physically from these traumas that she had accumulated, we see her take control of her life, but one that does not make her completely happy. Thus, the husband has to leave to find work far away from her, leaving her with all the home that slowly seems to crumble down upon itself, and this crumbling arrives at her home in the form of illness.

An illness for which she evidently was not prepared to face, but which she uses all the resources she has at hand to try not to destroy her home and, principally, not to end up with her children.

Here, the illness and a devastating fever present themselves, almost like a kind of ritual, where this woman is placed as a witch trying to invoke those forces of nature that always accompanied her to save her children, but and almost achieves it. Here the movie enters its final stretch, where yes, saving her daughter, but losing her son, the movie enters a sticky grief that envelops all the characters.

Thus, the movie lays bare everything that the loss signifies and how it is approached from these different angles from the wife and the husband. One who, with the suffering, decides nevertheless to return to his work because he knows that this is the sustenance for a family already fragmented by this pain, which contrasts with that of a woman who stays immobile because of the pain, paralyzed, and who does not understand how others are capable of facing it in a way different from hers. Thus, the final fourth of the movie is narrated to us from this vision of astonishment and a certain impotence before the way in which others process a pain that for us is impossible, one last move and with it the attendance of the wife to the work.

One where her husband reflects all the pain and impotence that he felt for the death of his son and that lets a wounded woman be seen, crossed in a different way, crossed through the eyes of an artist who does suffer it, but processes it differently.

Letting us see more than anything the genius of a man who had to sacrifice a lot to leave an astonishment that would endure in humanity for generations, perhaps it would never completely come to be forgotten, but that in turn yields his work as a burden to request the forgiveness of the people who sustained upon their back the price to pay for carrying out that own genius.

A movie with a somewhat confusing plot—I haven't seen it, but from what you've shared, it has a bit of drama, family conflicts, and a woman struggling to provide for her family with an absent father.

Greetings, I saw the movie a few months ago, however my perception of it is a little different, I see a woman devoted to both nature and her children, a father who, despite not being present due to work and fulfilling his dream of being a writer, felt a great love for his children; these were adverse but common circumstances that many families sometimes face.
