[Movie] Reviw: The Boy and the Heron (En-Es)

Pain as a human necessity, perhaps this is one of the most contradictory aspects of humanity because in our urge to feel, pain is something that we can always have close at hand and, therefore, we run the risk of turning to it in the face of the need to simply feel something.

This movie confronts pain in a very interesting way because, yes, like so many others, it tackles grief after a family tragedy, but because when that grief should have already ended, yet we perpetuate ourselves there, a completely different epic begins, and from that epic is what The Boy and the Heron is about.

Because we could not affirm that pain passes or has an expiration date, but when everything around us is recovering from a wound much faster than what we can do or face, there the world seems to give us a second blow, a more silent impact, but one that still overwhelms us.

In the midst of this complex situation, we have Mahito, a boy who, after the loss of his mother, has to accept his new stepmother, who in turn is his aunt and is pregnant with his little brother.

Thus, an emotional Molotov cocktail is prepared for us, loaded with complex family interactions, because after the disgrace that was the loss of his mother in a fire, Mahito's father tries to integrate him into his new life with his new wife, but this is an issue that will not be easy for them at all, and even more so with the shadow of war getting closer and closer to them.

To run away from all this, Mahito returns to his mother's family home, one where he does not like to be at all, but it is the only thing he has left after these changes, and near which many family legends are wrapped up, which are nothing more than the reflection of a certain family flaw that ends up taking it to the different ones of this family, so to speak.

To sustain what the movie proposes to you as a fantastic world, but which could easily be the representation of a problem that they are inheriting generation after generation and of which the turn has come for our protagonist to be the bearer.

Thus, this figure of a heron is shown as the herald of this family design, through which Mahito has access to this fantastic world that puts him over and over again to question his actions and, more than that, his attitude towards his new reality, how the small decisions he has change this entire world. Because already up to this reality, Mahito presented a complex relationship with everything that surrounded him, not facing things as a boy of his age would normally do it, but loading it all with an uncomfortable emotiveness even for the spectator.

Thus, this fantastic world into which he immerses himself a little reflects the chiaroscuro of himself, his mind, and more than this, his family, which loads with this. Where we do find characters of all kinds and perhaps an antagonist, but who does not really manage to carry the symbolic weight of the movie, because at the end of the day, the challenge of all this is Mahito himself and his decision, something that we can see in the final stretch.

Where after many changes, even in attitude, where he tries to mend his mistakes, he is seen before the final decision of whether to continue perpetuating the fantasy of this world under the weight of assuming a great responsibility that he did not decide—being this the reflection of this family burden that passes from one generation to another—or if finally breaking with everything and continuing his life, although difficult and complex like his very own traumas, real, very real.

Thus, we are given a complex story, full of nuances, very rich; perhaps I didn't mention it up to this point, but everyone must already know it's a Studio Ghibli movie. A thing that ensures us at least the visual quality, which in this movie is spectacular, with shots and sequences truly out of this world and drawn entirely by hand.

By its director Hayao Miyazaki, who is freely inspired by a work of Japanese literature called How Do You Live?, to gift us a vibrant work with very vivid colors and that contrasts perfectly with the darkness that its plot handles in a subterranean way.

Thus, both the visuality and the soundtrack manage to draw us this world where the fantastic and the real clash with an unusual force to try to overcome one another, but that in that struggle end up having a harmony truly worthy of seeing.
