Getting to Know the Bolivarian Society of Venezuela
On most of my recent trips to Caracas, I’ve explored different parts of the city center, but for some reason there’s an old mansion that seems to slip under the radar—perhaps overshadowed by the significance of the Liberator’s birthplace and the grandeur of the Bolivarian Museum—yet it stands right there on the same block, side by side with them and sharing the same cobblestone street. It is the building that houses the Bolivarian Society of Venezuela, a place dedicated to preserving, studying, and promoting everything related to the life and deeds of the Liberator Simón Bolívar. At first glance, it appears to be an academic institution, perhaps a bit removed from the warmth of the people, but in reality, it’s quite the opposite. Here, too, we have a grand colonial-style mansion, whose interior houses works of art, priceless artifacts, and a historical journey that speaks for itself.

Conociendo la Sociedad Bolivariana de Venezuela
En la mayoría de mis últimos viajes a Caracas he recorrido diferentes partes del centro de la ciudad, pero por alguna razón existe una vieja casona que resulta esquivar todas las miradas, quizás se encuentra solapada por la importancia de la casa natal de libertador mismo tiempo por la imponencia del museo bolivariano, pero esta se encuentra allí en la misma cuadra, compartiendo a cera y disfrutando de la misma calle empedrada, se trata de la casa que alberga la Sociedad Bolivariana de Venezuela, un lugar dedicado a preservar, estudiar y difundir todo lo relacionado con la vida y el accionar del Libertador Simón Bolívar, a primera vista se trata de una institución académica, quizás un poco alejada del calor del pueblo, pero en la realidad es todo lo contrario, acá también tenemos una casona de carácter colonial, en cuyo interior se resguardan obras de arte, piezas con características invaluables y un recorrido histórico que habla por sí solo.

Perhaps because it’s the last one on the block, it’s the least visited; perhaps it isn’t as large as other houses, nor does it feature as many artistic details, but even so, it remains an essential part of our history; its hallways and rooms preserve the memory of the struggles for independence, and most importantly, its doors are always open to welcome visitors who choose to step inside—always in a warm and friendly spirit, with youthful charm and a deep love for the homeland.
Quizás por ser la última de la cuadra es la menos visitada, quizás no es tan grande como otras casas, ni cuenta con tantos detalles desde el punto de vista artístico, pero aún así sigue siendo parte esencial de nuestra historia, sus pasillos y salones resguardan la memoria de las gestas independentistas y lo más importante de todo es que sus puertas se encuentran siempre abiertas para recibir a Los visitantes que se dispongan a cruzarlas, siempre bajo un espíritu agradable, con un carisma joven y un profundo amor por la patria.
Like all the colonial houses found in Caracas, this one features spacious, well-lit rooms, a beautiful central courtyard, and windows that stand out for their large size, fine metal finishes, and period-specific details. The. Tiled roofs are ever-present, while the floors feature more modern finishes, yet always retain those details that remind us of what they looked like over 200 years ago.
Como todas las casas coloniales que encontramos en Caracas, esta nos regala salones amplios y bien iluminados, un lindo patio central y ventanas que destacan por su gran tamaño, sus finos acabados metálicos y detalles propios de la época. Los. Los techos de tejas siempre están presentes, mientras que los pisos se nos presentan en acabados más modernos, pero siempre dejando esos detalles que nos recuerdan cómo se veían hace más de 200 años.
Walking through this area is not just a journey into the historical memory of a nation, but specifically into that of a figure who managed to completely transform the reality of his time. Obviously, everything revolves around the figure of the liberator, his exploits, and heroic moments, but special emphasis is placed on his ideas—which, for that era, could be considered revolutionary, and even today I can say with complete certainty that they are quite bold thoughts.
Caminar por acá no es adentrarse en la memoria histórica no solo de una nación, sino específicamente en la de un personaje que logró cambiar por completo la realidad que vivía su época. Obviamente, todo gira en torno a la figura de libertador, sus hazañas y momentos heroicos, pero se hace especial énfasis en sus ideas, las cuales para la época podrían considerarse como revolucionarias y aún en nuestros días puedo afirmar con total seguridad que se trata de pensamientos bastante audaces.
It is in this spirit that one carefully observes each painting—all executed in the style of patriotic art—where a portrait not only depicts a specific individual but also conveys an idea that transcends borders and outlasts its own time.
Es bajo ese espíritu que uno observa con detenimiento cada cuadro, todos pintados bajo esa connotación de la pintura patriótica, en donde un retrato no solo nos muestra determinada personalidad, sino que también nos transmite una idea que trasciende fronteras y supera su propio tiempo.
It is striking that most of the finishes here are in dark wood—a feature we can also find in the Liberator’s birthplace—but here we find ourselves in a slightly simpler setting: the walls are white, and the chandeliers illuminate the ceilings, creating a much more understated atmosphere—one without excessive detail, yet providing the ideal space for study and the development of increasingly critical thinking.
Llama la atención que acá la mayoría de los acabados son en madera oscura, lo cual también podemos encontrar en la casa natal del Libertador, pero acá nos descubrimos en una ambientación un poco más sencilla: las paredes son blancas y los candelabros que iluminan todos los techos, dejando así un ambiente mucho más sobrio, en donde no hay tantos detalles, pero en donde se encuentra el espacio ideal para el estudio y el desarrollo del pensamiento cada vez más crítico.
By this, I want you to understand that we are facing a somewhat atypical museum—one where we are not only confronted with artistic masterpieces and collectible works, but where ideas are also part of the experience, since, without realizing it, we are living within the works of a man who gave his life for the dream of freedom.
Con esto quiero que entiendan que estamos frente a un museo un tanto atípico, uno en donde no solamente nos enfrentamos a viejas artísticas y obras coleccionables, sino que acá las ideas también forman parte del recorrido, puesto que sin darnos cuenta estamos viviendo dentro de las obras de un hombre que entregó su vida por el sueño de la libertad.
At first, you arrive here expecting a run-of-the-mill tour, where you might find swords, vases, and medallions, but you leave with a contemplative mindset, since with every step you take, you discover a little more about the life of Simón Bolívar—a man whom we in Venezuela may idealize a bit, but when we look at the reality, it’s impossible not to feel proud of his life, since thanks to his heroic deeds, we are independent today.
Al principio, uno llega acá con la mente puesta en un recorrido trivial, en donde posiblemente nos encontremos espadas, jarrones y medallones, pero se sale con una mente reflexiva, ya que a través de cada paso se descubre un poco más de la vida de Simón Bolívar, un hombre que quizás en Venezuela idealizamos un poco, pero que cuando observamos la realidad, es imposible no sentirse orgulloso de su vida, ya que gracias a su gesta hoy en día somos independientes.
Perhaps it’s the least attractive house in terms of its facade; it’s the one that never has a line to get in, and it’s the last one at the end of the tour, but I can tell you from the bottom of my heart that it’s worth visiting—to wander through its hallways and marvel at the exhibits that represent an essential part of our republican history. It is there that we find our political roots, our social struggles, and the answers to many questions we ask ourselves today—questions that, to truly understand them, require us to take a journey through time and history.
Quizás es la casa menos atractiva desde el punto de vista de su fachada, es aquella que nunca tiene cola para entrar, y es la última al final del recorrido, pero desde el corazón les digo que vale la pena conocerla, adentrarse en sus pasillos y deleitarse la pieza que representa una parte esencial de nuestra historia republicana, es allí en donde encontramos nuestras raíces políticas, nuestras diatribas sociales y las respuestas de muchas preguntas que hoy en día nos hacemos y que realmente para poderlas comprender tenemos que dar un recorrido por el tiempo y la historia.
