I have been pondering on the cancel culture quite a bit and I do not know how to comment on it properly. But I know the reason why people are angry at a few people because it would be the same if I were in their position. But I can't comprehend the hate towards a person just because of their past. If someone does it I would call them immature.
I will use a real example which is about Choi Seung-hyun/ T. O. P from (BIGBANG) band. He was starred in the Squid Game 2 and is known for playing the character Thanos. After his return to the screens, the controversy around him began to surface once again with the release of the second season. As many know the actor has been through a lot with the marijuana case which has sentenced him a proper penalty. But viewers attacked him once again because they found his portrayal of the character to be both off putting and ridiculous.
I was wondering, like how far is too far with punishment? have they paid for what they have done and if so then does that not give them right to continue? Or should they suffer for their whole lives? are we as humans to make sure that they never get to experience a life well lived for the rest of eternity because of the horrible things they have done? And first of all who are we to take from them the chance of living a good life because of one horrible mistake? But I am not talking about forgiving and letting it all slide.
I am talking about taking away their ability to live a normal life, making them unable to form a family or grow up to lead a healthy life, ensuring they undergo suffering for the wrongs they do. I don't think this is the right way.
I know we all have freedom to judge and to humiliate those that have committed horrendous acts. And it's our basic right. Forgive or not it our choice to make and no one can tell us what to do.
Anyway, when thousands of individuals jump at the chance to tear someone's life down and hold their every action accountable for judgment I begin to feel discomfort because that's not a human behaviour. What if your actions or inactions may have resulted from a lack of information? You may never know the truth. I have seen on internet people seems to do that a lot nowadays making a big deal out of things without seeking the real context first.
At least I know the difference between condemning someone for their actions and wishing for their eternal suffering quite huge because it makes me question my values.
As I said I do not think that people should just forgive and let it go. But if someone is to face the punishment that is set by the law then they should be allowed to move on and not be bullied. And if people want to judge and condemn then so be it. Forgive or notnit is their choice to make not ours.
But perhaps we do not have to be quite so cruel. After all the celebrities are a human beint as well and as such they are prone to making mistakes and doing some really horrible things. So, it does not mean that we have to judge them and make their every step difficult, right?
For me, it has been complicated to differentiate between demanding accountability and demanding eternal suffering. In cases where the transgression has been properly punished by the law and I think that the rest should be left to themselves and their judgment. You may not support them and it is your basic right not to as well as not to view their content or listen to their songs. But you may not judge them and make their every step difficult for the rest of their lives either, otherwise it would look unfair.
