DON'T WORRY, HE WON'T GET FAR ON FOOT // No te preocupes, no irá lejos [ENG-ESP]
A 78-year-old neighbor with a terminal illness regularly tells me: "Son, in life you have to learn to laugh, even at yourself". And yes, a sense of humor is something that helps us when facing various situations on a daily basis. However, we must admit that we do not all laugh at the same things, nor do we all find the same situations funny. We tend to create our own sense of humor. That's why I say humor is not the same as comedy. Here I comment on the BioPic of John Callahan, a famous and controversial cartoonist; why I liked it and what I could extract from it.

I wanted to see this film at a time when I was developing an artistic idea, looking for a closer look at the representation of someone who managed to express his art. In researching who John Callahan was, I found adjectives such as "politically incorrect", that he had "acidic black humor" or that his illustrations were "corrosive". I looked at several of his images, and I understand why some people use those terms. Yet, not a few of his drawings fit those lines. What made this man have this kind of vision? What reception would the people of his time have to it? Both of these things are exposed in the film.
The first hour shows a John Callahan (Joaquin Phoenix) recounting his last day of being able to walk, how he became a paraplegic, and his beginnings in this new stage of his life. He openly shows his alcoholism, admitting how low he fell at times and how ugly he looked trying to satisfy himself daily from it. He is sincere in exposing his past conflicts: the abandonment of his mother and the still persistent desire to know her and why she left him; the estrangement with his father; and his peculiar relationship with the family he grew up with. It is well known that the conditions in which the individual grows up significantly shapes his values, criteria, sense of justice and what he considers important, but also what he will lack in the future. And it is possible that when you put your heart into an art, these nuances may be present unconsciously. So this first hour exposes this man's life, and helps you empathize and imagine how difficult it can be to deal with situations as peculiar as his.
This is one of the aspects of the film that I enjoyed - who hasn't had the past catch up with them at some point and get them into a rough patch? Perhaps resulting in gray days, unkind words, negative thoughts, undue reactions? How good it is that those who know more than one are the ones who can understand, and not judge, and know what we are talking about unwisely just because we are in a momentary bad tune. How important it is to get to know people, but also to let them get to know us, being open and frank with whomever we can. I see that in John Callahan. Perhaps, if the first thing someone sees about him is one of the controversial illustrations, they might label him and pigeonhole him as ... so-and-so. But his sense of humor was not just that. It's like trying to encapsulate a person's entire being just by the first few sentences we hear him say in conversation. The author of such caricatures must have thought, lived and felt situations that make him express himself in those particular ways, which one may not be fully aware of.

Already in the second hour we see a Jhon trying to express himself in his drawings, perceiving that it can be the escape valve for so many bittersweet feelings, emotions and thoughts. Some of them we need to talk them over with a good friend, but Jhon was discovering that he should have done this much earlier, and I'm sure it would have helped him a lot. I like it when he starts showing them to the people he comes in contact with, and getting a first-hand sense of their acceptance or rejection. He sure could have had the feedback needed to evaluate the results. Of course, when tackling thorny issues with an uncommon sense of humor, it is to be expected that many will not like it, will not find it funny. That's what we were talking about at the beginning.
And here's another issue I take away. Knowing something of Callahan's past, we can understand why his drawings have that tone. Maybe some people are alarmed by some of them, but who hasn't had a twisted or strange idea at some time or another? It's just that some of us don't express it or make it public. Yes, so we have a human being, with his strengths and weaknesses, his joys and sorrows, his accomplishments and disappointments, coping as best he can to move forward. And in my research I was able to see some interviews of this man in real life, and it is interesting that some of the people who came to him to badmouth him about some of his drawings as being offensive to the disabled now realized that he himself was one of them! And several of the drawings in the film were born out of his own experience, the way he saw himself, and he wasn't thinking of someone else. Not all of us have the ability to see ourselves broadly and to be able to even make humor out of our foibles. Standing ovation for my 78 year old neighbor mentioned at the beginning!

Joaquin Phoenix gives us a masterful performance, in my opinion. The time he is on the stretcher after the accident where he can barely speak, you can feel the physical and emotional pain the character feels, and you can only see his face and hear a faint voice. The joy he feels as he sits in his new motorized wheelchair and drives it for the first time. And soon after, you see the indifference and dismay with which he sometimes handles it, which seems even reckless. For me, one of the best performances of this great actor.
At the same time, we can see in a real way several messages and situations that invite us to reflect and learn. A romantic and loyal love like the one Annu (Rooney Mara) showed to John. The willpower necessary to be able to leave destructive and harmful habits behind. The courage of the right words when we need serious help, the kind that you listen to and it shakes you, because it touches your heart. The outstanding courage it takes to apologize, to forgive others, and finally to forgive oneself. At the same time, it is painful when you are on the stretcher after the accident, and you are visited by a group of medical students. Your ailments are study material for others; your serious physical and emotional injuries are translated into technical language used in the medical field that almost sounds like it is being translated into an unknown language. We see how frustrating it can be to depend on others almost completely. Sometimes when he feels it takes a while for the young hired help to arrive and assist him, he often unloads with yelling and swearing when he finally does arrive. What a difficult situation! Not to mention the message he carries regarding those who approach you pretending to be a friend, someone who wants you to enjoy yourself and be happier. The character of Dexter (Jack Black) is an accurate representation of this issue that sometimes plays a trick on us in life. How some necessary procedures are complicated and delayed just to comply with some protocols and procedures, which hinder the true meaning of some institutions, which is the help, protection and altruism. In a picture of a beautiful landscape there are also dark colors.

THE SCENE
I selected it because I think it contains one of the main lessons. It is very brief, but I think it is key. After being told by the staff of the publication that included John's drawings that there are many people who are being offended by his material, Callahan comes home and starts filtering his unpublished drawings, categorizing them as funny, not funny, some that he will only leave for his partner, and possibly having others. That I think is emotional intelligence, humorous, artistic, personal, social.... Jhon begins to self-criticize his work even more, and sees it from a broader perspective, taking into account now the different visions and criteria that his viewers may have, and not only what he considered funny, entertaining, correct or simply everyday. Now, he can think more about others, using his imagination, broadening his vision. He can now continue to create material taking into account a broader spectrum of humor, values, criteria, opinions, visions, and that takes him to a new level. The beneficiary is himself, because that breadth makes him see nuances and colors that in his own experience he does not see as an individual. It is impossible to experience absolutely everything in life. Many of the things we can learn and see through the imagination and the experiences of others. But sometimes we do not have the time and opportunity to do this mental work. But if it is done, you grow integrally as a person. Besides, it teaches that we cannot go through life expressing everything that comes to our mind, just as it comes to our mind. No. We can hurt, offend, make uncomfortable, be wrong... and maybe even just say something that the interlocutor is not prepared to listen to, or would be unable to understand. We need to filter our thoughts, words, actions, and this is done by the intelligent. Who's in?

Before I finish, I want to make an important point. I am not in favor of cruel, sadistic, obscene humor that offends and demeans other races or nationalities. The beautiful gift of a sense of humor should not be employed for these purposes. I try not to even laugh if one of them suddenly rang out in casual conversation. I recognize and accept that everyone has their own sense of humor and uses it as they see fit. So I take care only to develop, improve and filter mine. In addition, it is better not to give in to negative thoughts and give in to them. It is unhealthy to try to believe that because we have had a difficult childhood we are justified in leading a sad, gray life, perhaps treating others with little kindness. Our life can have the meaning we expect and we always have the necessary help within reach.
And we come to the part where I give my opinion: the top 3 phrases. They are here because they are well designed, that make you think, that you remember as time goes by, either because they are authentic, truthful, deep, original, controversial, vile lies or because they are key to understand the movie. Here they are... PUM!
¡PUM!

"Why did you get in the car with him knowing he was drunk?" (Donnie)
"Maybe life absolutbly not supposed to be as meaning has we think he is" (Corky)
" You can help yourself " (Jhon's mother)
With a broad mind you can watch this movie. It celebrates life, without falling into sentimentality. There won't be an uplifting scene, where the protagonist is hit in the face by a gentle breeze while the colors of the sunset paint his smooth, re-applied makeup on his face as he draws a shy smile on his lips without showing his teeth. Let Joaquin Phoenix take your hand and Gus Van Sant (Director) take the other and tell you this story in a peculiar way.
