If you like thrillers, you're one of me. That's why the trailer for this film caught my attention and I wanted to find out more. That research made me realize that they might not take too much to heart about keeping the audience in suspense and constant anxiety to find out the killer. Now that I've seen it, was it worth it?

PREVIEW

A story set in the English capital in the middle of the 20th century, in the midst of the celebration of the 100th performance of Agatha Christie's play "The Mousetrap". The murder of someone connected in some way to the play leads Inspector Stoppard (Sam Rockwell) and Agent Stalker (Saoirse Ronan) to be assigned to find the wrongdoer. It will be easy to spot several suspects but they will have to sharpen their senses to find out if they are guilty or not.

It is clear that this is a story built around a real historical event. But to what extent can the film also be something that happened in real life? So far, they have kept it as just another fictional story.

Will we get pure suspense? Will it be more of a comedy? How about an inspirational story? For me, none of the above. Yes, it bites on the first two, and alternates between one and the other to maintain a coherent story in the hour and a half production. We see already used resources that we know work and that aesthetic care that trains you, albeit with a symmetry that sometimes makes you uncomfortable.

THE MAIN CHARACTERS

This is one of the highlights. They carry a lot of weight in the film and both did not disappoint. Saoirse Ronan portrays the enthusiastic Agent Stalker. Her inexperience combined with the passion she cultivated for her profession makes her take her assigned job very seriously. She is so detail oriented that it makes her more prone to mistakes, since the more options one has the harder it is to make decisions. We will have her asking direct questions that seek to remove the delicate cover about the possible intentions that some suspects might have.

For his part, Inspector Stoppard is played by Sam Rockwell. Years of experience make him someone who easily rules out possible suspects just by listening to some of their answers. This is sometimes difficult for his partner and us as the audience to understand. At the end of his argument, one says: "You're right. It couldn't have been that person. " Her weakness? Her close friendship with alcohol, the root of which could be in the disappointments she has had in previous years.

So on the one hand we have a female officer looking to take advantage of this golden opportunity to polish her criminalistic skills that may even help her pass her sergeant's exam. And on the other side we have an unstable inspector without much reason to go on living who is only doing his duty perhaps to earn enough money for the next bottle to drown his sorrows with. Training and teaching? Not in the plans. This combination will have plenty of humor, from the very awkward way they meet. But as is often the case, camaraderie will save both of them from embarrassing situations.

IT ALL WORKS.

There are several things I liked. For starters, its length seemed reasonable to me. It's not looking to be the movie that's looking to sweep the Oscars, so why drag it out unnecessarily? Decent sequences and without wasting time with bland dialogues just to try to better draw one of the characters that, in the end, will have nothing to do with the climax of the story.

For me, good decisions were made on the technical and photography side. **The color palette is very good, alternating strong and pure colors. I like the way they show white in exteriors. Also, in the interior scenes, like the ones inside the theater, the red is intense and beautiful. In the others, there is a lot of wood, which with the right ink still makes this reddish tone predominate and will keep your heart rate up.

The different angles are reserved only for a few things that the director seems to want to highlight, to make you notice what he wants. We will have some zenithal angles to show a desk, some sandwiches, and all of them will have a clear intention, in your entertainment or in the narration.

In addition, the symmetrical composition that predominates is something well thought out that surely took several seconds to achieve before he set the cameras rolling. The camera lines up with the columns of London's exquisite infrastructure, the groups of people are so well placed that they look like checkers on a chessboard, the lone character will generally be in the middle of the shot with a good balance of objects in the background. I must admit that although this makes you avoid distractions, when I saw it over and over again so often, it was like remembering in my head the school teacher telling you: *"Sit up straight."

The music was fun, chordal, fresh, with lots of strings. It added dynamism to the story and I think in the middle of the movie it really helps to keep you interested. Obviously, in the key parts and denouement of the story we can perceive how the decibels go up and it will reclaim its protagonism.

YOU ALREADY KNOW THEM WITHOUT HAVING SEEN IT.

If you like suspense and you already know that this movie will not have it in its pure state, you will surely be able to decipher things throughout the movie, so I'm not the one who will bring you spoilers! They're already in your mind, thanks to your experience with previous films. You will be suspicious of some characters, attitudes, phrases and moments. Can you say that the movie itself gives spoilers? Dare to speculate.

One of the resources they use are flashbacks. It is a matter of taste. Some people are uncomfortable with them and others have no problem with them. In my case, sometimes I get a little lost when this resource is abused. However, we understand the reason why they are used: making you build up the picture little by little, and somehow we feel the same as the officers who are trying to put their puzzle together.

MY OPINION

What was strange to me? Seeing Americans playing English characters, Londoners! I missed that refined British accent in this film. I admit that in some outdoor scenes I thought I saw an Anglo-Saxon sightseeing in England, not a Brit trying to crack some criminal cases.

Do I recommend it? Yes, because not everything we see is going to be a cult film for every genre. But you will see a well-made film, which perhaps could have done more with the script or the acting quality of the cast. You will have fun with the attempt of two people opposed in several aspects but who must try to work as a team for a common goal. And their personalities make it funny to hear and listen to them as well. And at the same time you will try to figure out who might have committed the murders.

And we come to the part where I give my opinion: the top 3 sentences. They are here because they are well designed, that make you think, that you remember as time goes by, either because they are authentic, truthful, deep, original, controversial, vile lies or because they are key to understand the movie. Here they are... BANG!

Another light movie, which you'll be able to watch to spend some time distracting yourself. That's one of the goals of cinema, isn't it? While there are some of us who like to feel something when we sit in front of the screen, sometimes we just want to be distracted, entertained and have a good time. This is one such production.

Si te gusta las películas de suspenso, eres de los míos. Por eso, el trailer de éste film llamó mi atención y quise averiguar más. Dicha investigación me hizo ver de que posiblemente no se tomarían muy a pecho eso de mantener a la audiencia en expectativa y constante zozobra por descubrir al asesino. Ahora que la he visto, ¿valió la pena?

VISTA PRELIMINAR

Una historia ambientada en la capital inglesa a mitad del siglo XX, en plena celebración de la presentación número 100 de la obra teatral de Agatha Christie titulada "La ratonera". El asesinato de alguien que tiene relación de alguna forma con dicha obra teatral hace que el Inspector Stoppard (Sam Rockwell) y la Agente Stalker (Saoirse Ronan) sean asignados para encontrar al malhechor. Será fácil detectar a varios sospechosos pero deberán afinar sus sentidos para averiguar si son culpables o no.

Queda claro de que es una historia que se construye alrededor de un hecho real histórico. Pero, ¿hasta qué punto puede que la película sea también algo que sucedió en la vida real? Hasta ahora, lo han mantenido como una historia ficticia más.

¿Tendremos suspenso puro? ¿Será más bien una comedia? ¿Qué tal una historia inspiradora? Para mi, ninguna de las anteriores. Sí, muerde las dos primeras, y alterna entre una y otra para mantener una historia coherente en la hora y media de producción. Vemos recursos ya usados que sabemos que funcionan y ese cuidado estético que te entrene, aunque con una simetría que a veces incomoda.

LOS PERSONAJES PRINCIPALES

Esto es uno de los aspectos sobresalientes. Tienen mucho peso en el film y ambos no defraudaron. Saoirse Ronan representa a la entusiasta Agente Stalker. Su inexperiencia combinada con la pasión que cultivó por su profesión la hace tomarse muy enserio su trabajo asignado. Es tan detallista que la hace más propensa a los errores, puesto que mientras más opciones uno tiene más difícil es tomar decisiones. La tendremos haciendo preguntas directas que buscan quitar la delicada cubierta sobre las posibles intenciones que pudieran tener algunos sospechosos.

Por su parte, el Inspector Stoppard es interpretado por Sam Rockwell. Los años de experiencia lo hacen alguien que descarta fácilmente a los posibles sospechosos con sólo escuchar algunas de sus respuestas. Ésto resulta a veces difícil de comprender para su compañera y para nosotros como audiencia. Al final de su argumento, uno dice: "Tiene razón. No pudo ser esa persona". ¿Su debilidad? Su estrecha amistad con el alcohol, cuya raíz pudiera estar en las decepciones que ha tenido en años anteriores.

Así que por un lado tendremos una funcionaria que busca aprovechar ésta oportunidad de oro para pulir sus habilidades criminalísticas que incluso pueden servirle para aprobar su examen como sargento. Y por el otro lado tenemos a un inestable inspector sin muchas razones para seguir viviendo que sólo cumple con su deber tal vez para ganar el dinero suficiente para la próxima botella con la que ahogará sus penas. ¿Capacitar y enseñar? No está en los planes. Ésta combinación tendrá mucho humor, desde la misma forma incómoda en la que se conocen. Pero como sucede con frecuencia, la camaradería hará de que ambos se salven de situaciones embarazosas.

TODO FUNCIONA.

Hay varias cosas que me han gustado. Para empezar, su duración me ha parecido razonable. No busca ser la película que busca arrasar con los premios Oscar, por eso, ¿por qué alargarla innecesariamente? Unas secuencias decentes y sin perder tiempo con diálogos sosos para sólo intentar dibujar mejor a uno de los personajes que, a la final, no tendrá nada que ver con el clímax de la historia.

Para mí, se tomaron buenas decisiones en la parte técnica y de fotografía. La paleta de colores es muy buena, alternando colores fuertes y puros. Me gusta cómo muestran en blanco en exteriores. También, en las escenas en interiores, como las que son dentro del teatro, el rojo es intenso y hermoso. En las demás, hay mucha madera, que con la tinta adecuada sigue haciendo que predomine éste tono rojizo que mantendrá tus pulsaciones a buen ritmo.

Los ángulos diferentes están reservados sólo para algunas cosas que el director parece que quiere destacar, y así hacer que te fijes en lo que él quiere. Tendremos algunos ángulos cenitales para mostrar un escritorio, unos bocadillos, y todos ellos tendrán una clara intención, en tu entretenimiento o en la narración.

Además, la composición simétrica que predomina es algo bien pensado que de seguro necesitó varios segundos para lograrlos antes de poner a grabar a las cámaras. La cámara se alinea con las columnas de la exquisita infraestructura londinense, los grupos de personas están tan bien ubicados que parecen fichas en un tablero de ajedrez, el personaje en solitario generalmente estará en el medio de la toma con un buen balance de los objetos en el fondo. Debo admitir de que aunque esto hace que evites distracciones, cuando lo veía una y otra vez tan seguido, era como recordar en mi cabeza a la maestra de la escuela diciéndote: "Siéntate derecho".

La música fue divertida, acorde, fresca, con muchas cuerdas. Añadía dinamismo a la historia y creo que en la mitad de la película ayuda mucho a mantenerte con interés. Obviamente, en las partes claves y de desenlace en la historia podremos percibir cómo suben los decibeles y reclamará su protagonismo.

YA LOS SABES SIN HABERLA VISTO.

Si te gustan el suspenso y ya sabes que ésta película no lo tendrá en estado puro, de seguro podrás descifrar cosas a lo largo de la película. ¡Así que no soy yo quien te traerá los spoilers! Ya están en tu mente, gracias a tu experiencia con films anteriores. Sospecharás de algunos personajes, actitudes, frases y momentos. ¿Se puede decir que la misma película da los spoilers? Atrévete a especular.

Uno de los recursos que usan son los flashbacks. Es cuestión de gustos. A algunos le incomodan y otros no tienen problemas con ellos. En mi caso, a veces me pierdo un poco cuando se abusa de éste recurso. Sin embargo, entendemos el motivo del por qué se usan: haciendo que vayas construyendo poco a poco el cuadro, y de alguna forma sintamos lo mismo que los funcionarios que están tratando de armar su rompecabezas.

MI OPINIÓN

¿Qué me resultó extraño? Ver a americanos interpretando a personajes ingleses, ¡londinenses! Extrañé ese refinado acento británico en éste film. Reconozco que algunas escenas en exteriores me pareció ver a un anglosajón haciendo turismo en Inglaterra, no un británico tratando de descifrar unos casos criminales.

¿La recomiendo? Sí, porque no todo lo que vemos precisamente va a ser una película de culto para cada género. Pero sí podrás ver una película bien hecha, que quizás pudo hacer más con el guión o la calidad interpretativa del elenco. Te divertirás con el intento de dos personas opuestas en varios aspectos pero que deben tratar de trabajar en equipo para un objetivo en común. Y su personalidad hace de que oírlos y escucharlos también resulte cómico. Y al mismo tiempo intentarás descifrar quién pudo haber cometido los homicidios.

Y llegamos a la parte donde doy mi opinión: el top 3 de frases. Están aquí por ser bien diseñadas, que te hacen pensar, que recuerdas al pasar el tiempo, bien sea por ser autenticas, veraces, profundas, originales, controversiales, viles mentiras o porque son clave para entender la película. Aquí están... ¡PUM!

Otra película ligera, que podrás ver para pasar un rato distrayéndote. Ese es uno de los objetivos del cine, ¿no es cierto? Aunque hay algunos que nos gusta sentir algo cuando nos sentamos frente a la pantalla, algunas veces queremos sólo distraernos, entretenernos y disfrutar un buen rato. Ésta es una producción de esa clase.
