SEARCHING... (2018) // Buscando... (2018) [ENG-ESP]

In these months of confinement, we have used our electronic devices to communicate with family members, to work, to train, to shop... Many have been able to feel more comfortable interacting through these means. But what if we were to use these digital tools to search for a loved one who has disappeared? 😲 Well, this thriller gives us an idea of what such a situation would be like. Released in 2018 (but it has a lot of 2020 in it), today I'm talking about "Searching..."

David Kim is a recently widowed father searching for his daughter Margot who goes missing one random night. It sounds like we've seen this situation in other feature films, but here are a couple of different issues in this movie: First, this father has no special skills, no friends in the intelligence department, no military or police background, no secret base with all the gadgets to do a thorough investigation. He is a standard father who only seems to have a good internet access from his computer and then from his daughter's laptop (Well, looking at it this way, in some places of the planet having an internet connection like the one he has would really be a special super power that many would like). And second, the whole movie takes place from the perspective of said computer screens. I think this was the main reason I wanted to see this movie, to see "how that ate". Although I know little of the previous work of John Cho (David Kim) and Debra Messing (Agent Rosemary Vick) the leads, the performances do not disappoint.
The first few minutes manage to introduce you to the family of three and you easily connect with them, their joys, their goals, their optimism.... So when you lose one of them, you can imagine the pain that this means for the characters and how they will cope with the grief. And it's a nuance that's in the rest of the film. The father undertakes his search as any mortal would: asking acquaintances, networking contacts, childhood friends, etc. Before long, he asks himself the same question many parents ask: How well do I know my daughter? His deteriorating emotions are evident as he faces a series of discoveries and twists and turns in the basic investigation, alternating between hits on valid suspicions and misses on false appearances.

Undoubtedly, this film makes you think about the use of technology. For example, how much personal information is available on the network, and that it can be used by third parties for different purposes. Also, about how useful or not it is to depend on our electronic devices to project, record and track our life and habits. The differences in personal and virtual relationships at key moments in life. Honesty and dishonesty within social networks and impersonating identities. And something else: if someone else were to examine my computer in depth, my files, photos, documents and contacts, could they know who I really am? These and other elements are addressed in this father's desperate virtual search.
But it has that important human burden that cannot be left out. How long the grieving process takes and how it affects life decisions. The unique way each family communicates, which is not the same between David and his brother Peter (played by Joseph Lee) as it is between David and his daughter Margot. It shows in a humorous way (in my opinion) how some people and companies often take advantage of unfavorable situations for their own benefit. Also, how many do not know what to say to those who have recently lost a loved one.

I was pleased to see this way of telling a good story from the perspective of computer and cell phone screens, wandering through web pages and applications. It's a long time after watching it that you can think that it sure didn't have a big production budget. Real characters, real situations, real applications, real feelings... I consider it very current, despite being released more than two years ago. The fact of being in confinement brings a realism that we did not expect.
I recommend you see this movie, whether you are a parent or not. Have you ever wondered what parents would be willing to do to save their child? I'm pretty sure that after you finish watching this film you will expand your answer to this question.

Of course, in many movies we hear thoughtful, thought-provoking sentences that you remember, either because they are authentic, truthful, profound, original, controversial, vile lies or because they are key to understanding the movie. I want to end with the phrases that I liked the most from this film.
"You don't always know your kid. And that is never your fault." (Rosemary Vick)
"She needed you to talk to her, not the other way around" (Peter Kim)
"I wish there was no case to be assigned to" (Rosemary Vick)
