Losing a loved one is perhaps one of the greatest fears of any person, for whatever reason, there is always someone without whom the world would fall apart completely. For those of us who are parents, one of them are our children, it is something that no one ever wants to live, however, there are those who have the misfortune of doing so. That is the situation that Ana and Álvaro Martín live in the Netflix miniseries " The Snow Girl" when they suffer the kidnapping of their little daughter, and although it is a fictional story, we know that this type of situation unfortunately does happen in real life.

The Snow Girl, is the adaptation of the novel written by Javier Castillo, is a Spanish production and consists of only six episodes, which can be found in their entirety on Netflix. The story follows Miren Rojo, a journalism intern who begins to investigate the disappearance of Amaya Martín, who was kidnapped during the 2010 Three Kings parade. Miren, who is going through a difficult situation after being a victim of sexual abuse, becomes more involved in the case and puts all her energy into finding the girl.
It's hard to talk about this miniseries without incurring the hated spoilers, so I won't talk much about the story because in each chapter there is a small revelation. What I can say is that something that pleasantly surprised me about the series is that it has a lot of back and forth in time, that is, the case is revealed little by little, in dribs and drabs practically. When we think we have some light on the whereabouts of little Amaya, it ends up turning out to be a dead end. This is really effective at the moment of generating anguish in the viewer, who only wants the case to be solved and the girl to return home with her parents.
I loved the sense of expectation that was generated during the six episodes, I'm usually one of those who makes a thousand guesses and imagines a thousand possible scenarios. However, here that was really tricky because they reveal so little to us and when they do they are such mixed things that it was hard to play detective and get it right. This made me get even more involved with the story, I wanted answers, but in the end all I was left with was waiting for the denouement to finally know what had happened to Amaya.
Contrast with reality
As the miniseries unfolds, details are revealed that reflect the seriousness of the situation in which we currently live, especially in reference to clandestine websites where you can consume illegal content about rape and abuse, it is chilling to see a reality reflected in such a direct way. There were even a couple of moments when I felt truly nauseated by how disgusting certain people can be, whom I can only refer to as degenerates.
On the other hand, we see represented the inability of the police to solve this type of situation, although at the beginning it is seen that they do everything possible to find her, the reluctance, the workload and the few resources, make their commitment to the case is decreasing more and more. As I mentioned, this story takes place in Spain, a country that is considered "first world", if that happens with the police in such a country, what is left for those of us who live in Latin America? That was one of the things that made me reflect the most, since living in Mexico I have read of cases in which the relatives themselves have found their missing persons because the police are incapable of doing so.
In this aspect it is not a very easy series to watch, since it represents a very crude reality, however, I think it works to uncover a problem that many want to ignore and that unfortunately seems to be more present every day.
The commitment of a journalist
While the series revolves around Amaya's disappearance, it actually portrays Miren Rojo's struggle against her ghosts of the past. She lives in a different reality from everyone else, having been a victim of rape she has lost trust in everyone and fears that the girl has been kidnapped to be sold and sexually exploited. It is precisely her trauma that leads her to get involved, perhaps too much, in the case and to never abandon the investigation.
This character was for me very strange, sometimes I empathized with her and I understood perfectly her motivations, but at other times I felt that she was something unreal, maybe it is the trauma that the character went through, which makes some of her actions a little strange for me or maybe the writer simply exaggerated a little with her. Despite that, the struggle and dedication she put into her investigation is admirable, which makes me wish that there really are journalists and detectives like her, who really get involved with their work.
Miren is the one who carries the rhythm in the story, she is the one who leads us through the different possibilities and suspects, which makes Milena Smit's acting work really stand out. We see her scared, but at the same time determined, not only to close once and for all with the case of Amaya's disappearance, but as she works on it, she also works on her own rape case (which had been left unresolved) and on healing her trauma. She is a strong character, but at the same time very vulnerable, as I told you before, she seemed different to me, maybe I am not used to see characters of this type so real.
The ending of the miniseries is perhaps somewhat bittersweet, the last two chapters we see what actually happened to Amaya during the time she was missing and it is quite a heartbreaking perspective. It was definitely not an ending that I expected, which I liked because many times these types of productions can be very predictable, but that is not the case with "The Snow Girl", for me it was an unexpected ending and to a certain extent, touching. It is a series that I recommend with my eyes closed, whether you like this type of productions or not, it is interesting and knows how to keep the mystery until the end.
What I liked the most
How they treated time in the series. If there is something I like in a series or movie are the time jumps and this series has quite a few back and forth in time. I thought it was a fantastic resource to keep the interest in the plot alive, the mystery and to keep us away from Amaya's real kidnappers.
What I liked least
Some things were too fortuitous. I understand that there may be journalists with a very good nose for investigation, but I feel that sometimes they exaggerated with Miren, many things were given to her so easily, which left the specialized police as real incompetents, and it is not that they are not, but the luck of the journalist was sometimes too extreme.

Para los que somos padres, una de ellas son nuestros hijos, es algo que nadie quiere vivir jamás, sin embargo, hay quienes tienen la desdicha de hacerlo. Esa es la situación que viven Ana y Álvaro Martín en la miniserie de Netflix "La chica de nieve" al sufrir el secuestro de su hija pequeña, y si bien se trata de una historia ficticia, sabemos que este tipo de situaciones lamentablemente sí llegan a suceder en la vida real.
La chica de nieve, es la adaptación de la novela escrita por Javier Castillo, es una producción española y consta solamente de seis episodios, los cuales pueden ser encontrados en su totalidad en Netflix. La historia sigue a Miren Rojo, una pasante de periodismo que comienza a investigar la desaparición de Amaya Martín, quien fuera secuestrada durante la cabalgata de reyes del año 2010. Miren, al estar pasando una situación difícil después de ser víctima de abuso sexual, se involucra demás en el caso y vuelca toda su energía en encontrar a la niña.
Es difícil hablar de esta miniserie sin incurrir en los odiados spoilers, así que no hablaré mucho de la historia porque en cada capítulo hay una pequeña revelación. Lo que sí puedo decir es que algo que me sorprendió gratamente de la serie es que tiene muchas idas y venidas en el tiempo, es decir, el caso va revelándose poco a poco, a cuenta gotas prácticamente. Cuando pensamos que tenemos alguna luz sobre el paradero de la pequeña Amaya, termina resultando un camino sin salida. Esto es realmente efectivo al momento de generar angustia en el espectador, quienes solamente queremos que ya se resuelva el caso y que la niña regrese a casa con sus padres.
Me encantó la sensación de expectación que se generó durante los seis episodios, yo normalmente soy de las que hace mil conjeturas y se imagina mil escenarios posibles. Sin embargo, aquí eso fue realmente complicado porque nos revelan tan poco y cuando lo hacen son cosas tan mezcladas que fue difícil jugar al detective y acertar. Esto hizo que me involucrara aún más con la historia, yo quería respuestas, pero al final lo único que me quedó fue esperar el desenlace para conocer por fin lo que había sucedido con Amaya.
Contraste con la realidad
A medida que se va desarrollando la miniserie, se nos van revelando detalles que reflejan la gravedad de la situación en la que vivimos actualmente, sobre todo en referencia a sitios web clandestinos donde se puede consumir contenido ilegal sobre violaciones y abusos, es escalofriante ver reflejada una realidad de forma tan directa. Hubo incluso un par de momentos en los que sentí verdaderas náuseas por lo desagradable que pueden llegar a ser ciertas personas a las que solo puedo referirme como degenerados.
Por otro lado, vemos representada la incapacidad de la policía para resolver este tipo de situaciones, si bien al principio se ve que hacen todo lo posible por encontrarla, el desgano, la carga de trabajo y los pocos recursos, hacen que su compromiso con el caso vaya disminuyendo cada vez más. Como les mencioné, esta historia se desarrolla en España, un país que es considerado de "primer mundo", si eso pasa con la policía en un país como ese, ¿Qué nos queda a los que vivimos en Latinoamérica?. Esa fue una de las cosas que más me hizo reflexionar, ya que al vivir en México he leído de casos en los que son los mismos familiares los que han encontrado a sus desaparecidos porque la policía es incapaz de hacerlo.
Es este aspecto no es una serie muy fácil de ver, puesto que representa una realidad muy cruda, sin embargo, creo que funciona para destapar un poco una problemática que muchos quieren ignorar y que lamentablemente parece que cada día está más presente.
El compromiso de un periodista
Si bien la serie gira alrededor de la desaparición de Amaya, en realidad retrata la lucha de Miren Rojo contra sus fantasmas del pasado. Ella vive en una realidad diferente a la de los demás, al haber sido víctima de una violación ha perdido la confianza en todo el mundo y teme que la niña haya sido secuestrada para ser vendida y explotada sexualmente. Es justamente su trauma lo que la lleva a involucrarse, quizás demasiado, en el caso y a no abandonar jamás la investigación.
Este personaje fue para mí muy raro, algunas veces empaticé con ella y entendí perfectamente sus motivaciones, pero en otras ocasiones sentí que era algo irreal, quizás sea el trauma que atravesó el personaje, lo que hace que algunas de sus acciones sean algo extrañas para mí o quizás simplemente el escritor exageró un poco con ella. A pesar de eso es admirable la lucha y la dedicación que le puso a su investigación, lo que me hace desear que existan realmente periodistas y detectives como ella, que de verdad se involucren con su trabajo.
Miren es la que lleva el ritmo en la historia, es ella la que nos conduce por las diferentes posibilidades y sospechosos, lo cual hace que el trabajo actoral de Milena Smit realmente destaque. La vemos asustada, pero a la vez decidida, no solamente a cerrar de una vez por todas con el caso de la desaparición de Amaya, sino que a medida que trabaja en ello, también lo hace en su propio caso de violación (el cual había quedado sin resolución) y en sanar su trauma. Es un personaje fuerte, pero a la vez muy vulnerable, como les dije anteriormente, me pareció diferente, quizás no estoy acostumbrada a ver personajes de este tipo tan reales.
El final de la miniserie es quizás algo agridulce, los dos últimos capítulos vemos lo que en realidad le sucedió a Amaya durante el tiempo que estuvo desaparecida y es una perspectiva bastante desgarradora. Definitivamente, no fue un final que esperara, lo cual me gustó porque muchas veces este tipo de producciones pueden ser muy predecibles, pero ese no es el caso de "La chica de nieve", para mí fue un final inesperado y hasta cierto punto, conmovedor. Es una serie que les recomiendo con los ojos cerrados, les guste o no este tipo de producciones, es interesante y sabe mantener el misterio hasta el final.
Lo que más me gustó
Como trataron el tiempo en la serie. Si hay algo que me gusta en una serie o película son los saltos temporales y esta serie tiene bastantes idas y venidas en el tiempo. Me pareció un recurso fantástico para mantener vivo el interés en la trama, el misterio y para mantenernos alejados de los verdaderos secuestradores de Amaya.
Lo que menos me gustó
Algunas cosas fueron demasiado fortuitas. Entiendo que pueda haber periodistas con muy buen olfato para la investigación, pero siento que a veces exageraron con Miren, muchas cosas se le daban con tanta facilidad, que dejaba a la policía especializada como unos verdaderos incompetentes, y no es que no lo sean, pero es que la suerte de la periodista a veces era demasiado extrema.
