Have you ever started a series and immediately got the feeling that it will be something extraordinary? That's exactly what happened to me with Pluto. This is a sci-fi thriller that in just eight episodes managed to become one of the best anime I've ever seen. The plot revolves around the investigation of a series of mysterious murders, all with one thing in common: the corpses are "adorned" with a pair of huge horns. The victims? The world's most advanced and powerful robots, as well as robot sympathisers and scientists. Gesicht, the best robot detective in existence, is tasked by Europol to solve the case and prevent further losses. During his investigation, he will not only discover that humanity faces more than one threat, but he will also come face to face with the truth of his species.

Pluto is based on the manga of the same name by Naoki Urasawa (Monster), which in turn is inspired by the work of master Osamu Tezuka. The story is set in a futuristic world, in which technology has progressed enormously and robots have been built with AI so advanced that they compete with and even surpass human abilities. After several conflicts and agreements, international laws have been enacted to give robots rights, which practically makes them a species living side by side with humans.
Despite having rights that give them basic guarantees such as owning property or adopting, robots are governed by Asimov's laws of robotics**, i.e. they cannot harm any human being. This brings up numerous ethical and moral conflicts within the series, as there are still humans who believe they are superior to robots and see them as mere tools to be used, discarded and even manipulated to satisfy their personal interests. In fact, one of the virtues of the series is to make us reflect on human nature: if we were to reach the scenario that the series presents, what position would we take on the idea of coexisting with a new species with different or superior capabilities to our own?
During its eight episodes, the series involves us not only in a world of police investigation, but also invites us to meet the most advanced and powerful robots developed by man: Montblanc, North N° 2, Brando, Heracles, Atom, Epsilon and Gesicht. Each has a life beyond their usefulness as "machines", with practically human motivations, which, without being able to help it, makes us appreciate and empathise with them, even as robots. It was a complete delight to see the story of each character, each one showing a human virtue, without the flaws that characterise us as a species, but with their own, because despite being AI, they have developed to the point of having their own personalities, ideas, and even feelings (yes, feelings).
At first, it might seem that the identity of the villain, or rather, the villains, is to some extent predictable and think that it is simply an anti-robot group, but the truth is that the details of everything that happens, the crimes, attacks and murders, are revealed surprisingly and gradually. It is not until the last chapters, perhaps even the last, that we learn the true identity of the culprits. As well as witnessing the magnitude of what they have prepared and the motive that led them to plan and execute everything.
The conclusion of the series is magnificent, full of revelations and emotion, we see great fights, which while not action-packed, are exciting enough to keep us cheering for our favourite robot. In the end, it leaves us with a great reflection on the nature of human emotions and the importance of learning to overcome and handle situations that arouse our hatred, anger, or need for revenge.
Animation and Music
I can't say that Pluto has perfect animation, as there were times when I doubted the ability of the animators, but visually the series is very appealing. Overall, the colour palette is quite striking, perhaps a bit of a contrast to the serious tone of the plot, but it works very well to bring out the darker aspects of the plot, and there are moments that will certainly move more than a few people. If you're familiar with the Monster series, the character design will look familiar, and of course, there's also something of the master Tezuka in several of the characters, especially Atom or as we know him around here: Astro Boy.
The action during the series is very well done, the design of Pluto is fantastic. At the beginning we see him just as a relentless tornado, however, during the last fights of the series we can see him fighting in all his splendour, and it is certainly shocking and terrifying. That makes these last action sequences my favourite of the whole series, not only because of the fight itself, but also because of the context and emotional charge they have.
The music is no slouch either, both the opening and the ending work very well for the series. Perhaps the opening theme is simple, but accompanied by the visuals, it serves as the perfect opener for each episode. The endings, on the other hand, are a marvel and get all my admiration, especially the first one, there wasn't an episode where I didn't enjoy it. The other themes that accompany the story, in general, are very good and emotionally charged, especially in the first episode.
Pluto is, without a doubt, one of the best anime that Netflix has in its catalogue and perhaps the best of the year. Despite the fact that its episodes last about an hour, there is no waste in them, there are no moments in which I felt the plot was weak, or I was bored, on the contrary, I found it difficult to stop watching them and I can't wait to do it again. It's a series that captivates from the first episode, it made me cry, smile and even feel contempt for human nature, definitely not to be missed.

La trama gira en torno a la investigación de una serie de misteriosos asesinatos, todos con algo en común: los cadáveres son "adornados" con un par de cuernos enormes. ¿Las víctimas? Los robots más avanzados y poderosos del mundo, además de simpatizantes de los robots y científicos. Gesicht, es el mejor detective robot que existe y es el encargado, por parte de la Europol, de resolver el caso y de evitar más pérdidas. Durante su investigación no solo descubrirá que la humanidad enfrenta más de una amenaza, sino que se encontrará frente a frente con la verdad de su especie.

A pesar de tener derechos que les dan garantías básicas como tener propiedades o adoptar, los robots se rigen por las leyes de la robótica de Asimov, es decir, no pueden hacerle daño a ningún ser humano. Esto trae varios conflictos éticos y morales dentro de la serie, ya que aún existen humanos que se creen superiores a los robots y los ven como simples herramientas para usar, descartar e incluso manipular para lograr satisfacer sus intereses personales. De hecho, una de las virtudes de la serie es hacernos reflexionar sobre la naturaleza humana, si llegáramos al escenario que plantea la serie, ¿qué posición tomaríamos ante la idea de coexistir con una nueva especie con capacidades diferentes o superiores a las nuestras?
Durante sus ocho episodios, la serie nos envuelve no solo en un mundo de investigación policíaca, sino que también nos invita a conocer a los robots más avanzados y poderosos desarrollados por el hombre: Montblanc, North N° 2, Brando, Heracles, Atom, Epsilon y Gesicht. Cada uno cuenta con una vida que va más allá de su utilidad como "máquinas", con motivaciones prácticamente humanas, que, sin poder evitarlo, nos hace apreciarlos y empatizar con ellos, aun desde su calidad de robots. Fue un completo deleite ver la historia de cada personaje, cada uno muestra una virtud humana, sin los defectos que nos caracterizan como especie, aunque sí con los propios, ya que a pesar de ser IA, han ido desarrollándose hasta el grado de tener sus propias personalidades, ideas e incluso sentimientos (sí, sentimientos).
En un principio, podría parecer que la identidad del villano, o mejor dicho, los villanos, es hasta cierto punto predecible y pensar que se trata simplemente de un grupo anti-robot, pero la verdad es que los detalles de todo lo que acontece, los crímenes, atentados y asesinatos, se van revelando sorpresiva y paulatinamente. No es hasta los últimos capítulos, quizás incluso podría decirse que hasta el último, que conocemos la verdadera identidad de los culpables de todo. Además de ser testigos de la magnitud de lo que tienen preparado y el motivo que los llevó a planear y ejecutar todo.
La conclusión de la serie es magnífica, está llena de revelaciones y emotividad, vemos grandes peleas, que si bien no están plagadas de acción, son suficientemente emocionantes como para mantenernos animando a nuestro robot favorito. Al final, nos deja una gran reflexión sobre la naturaleza de las emociones humanas y la importancia de aprender a superar y manejar situaciones que despierten nuestro odio, ira o necesidad de venganza.
Animación y Música
No puedo decir que Pluto cuenta con una animación perfecta, ya que hubo momentos en los que llegué a dudar de la capacidad de los animadores, sin embargo, visualmente la serie es sumamente atractiva. En general, cuenta con una paleta de colores bastante llamativa que quizás contraste un poco con la tonalidad tan seria de la trama, pero que funciona muy bien para hacer destacar los aspectos oscuros de la misma, y vaya que hay momentos que sin duda conmoverán a más de uno. Si están familiarizados con la serie Monster, el diseño de personajes les resultará familiar, y por supuesto, también hay algo del maestro Tezuka en varios de estos, sobre todo en Atom o como lo conocemos por estos lares: Astro Boy.
La acción durante la serie está muy bien realizada, el diseño del Pluto es fantástico. Al principio lo vemos solo como un implacable tornado, sin embargo, durante las últimas peleas de la serie se le puede ver pelear en todo su esplendor y sin duda es impactante y aterrador. Eso hace que estas últimas secuencias de acción sean mis favoritas de toda la serie, aunque no solo por la pelea en sí, sino por todo el contexto y carga emotiva que tienen.
En el apartado musical tampoco se queda atrás, tanto el opening como el ending funcionan muy bien para la serie. Quizás el tema de inicio sea sencillo, pero acompañado de la parte visual sirve como el abrebocas perfecto para cada episodio. Los ending, por otra parte, son una maravilla y se llevan toda mi admiración, sobre todo el primero, no hubo capítulo en el que no disfrutara de él. Los demás temas que acompañan la historia, en general, son muy buenos y están cargados de emociones, sobre todo en el primer episodio.
Pluto es, sin lugar a duda, uno de los mejores animes que tiene Netflix dentro de su catálogo y quizás sea el mejor del año. A pesar de que sus capítulos duran al rededor de una hora, no hay desperdicio en ellos, no hay momentos en los que haya sentido la trama floja o me haya aburrido, al contrario, me resultaba difícil dejar de verlos y no puedo esperar para volver a hacerlo. Es una serie que cautiva desde el primer episodio, me hizo llorar, sonreír e incluso sentir desprecio por la naturaleza humana, definitivamente, no se la pueden perder.
