Some people become feared because of what they can do, while others feel powerful because people believe they cannot be defeated. Késárí played around with this idea, bringing crime, spiritual powers and the fight for justice into one story.
The lead actor Késárí, played by Ibrahim Yekini (Itele D Icon), a notorious robber whose spiritual protection makes him appear almost untouchable. But being difficult to defeat does not mean being impossible to challenge. As his activities attract the attention of law enforcement, the battle between a man who believes in his power and those determined to bring him down became central to the story.
What makes the story interesting is the combination of crime and traditional beliefs. Rather than presenting a straightforward police-and-robber story, the film introduces spiritual elements that influences how the characters operate and how their conflicts unfold. It also raises an interesting question about when someone appears to have powers beyond ordinary human control, how much can the law really do?
Ibrahim Yekini carried the central character, while Femi Adebayo, Kemi Afolabi, Akinyemi Olaiya and Kevin Ikeduba are among the supporting cast. The movie was written and produced and directed by Ibrahim Yekini also known as Itele. It is part of the Yoruba action-film franchise that later produced additional instalments.
However, having an interesting concept does not automatically guarantee a well-executed story. The film has an appealing mix of action and spiritual mythology, but some parts of the storytelling and character development could have been clearer. At times, the premise feels stronger than the way the story developed, making it harder to connect with everything happening on screen.
Still, Késárí offers something for me as a viewer who enjoy action films and can also be cool with anyone who loves movies with supernatural elements. It may not get everything right, but its central idea gives it an identity beyond an ordinary crime film.
My general take remains that the concept is intriguing, even if the execution could have been tighter. It is worth considering if you enjoy this genre, particularly if you plan to follow the story into its later instalments.
