So I went in with mixed expectations on Descendants Wicked Wonderland, I loved The Rise of Red when it came out, so I wanted this one to at least match that energy, but sequels to musical fantasy movies can go either way. Thankfully, this one mostly delivered.
The movie picks up shortly after the events of The Rise of Red, exploring what happily ever after actually looks like for Red and Chloe once their time traveling adventure is over, that is actually one of my favorite things about it. Instead of just repeating the same "villain kid tries to fit into a new world" formula from the earlier films, this one leans into consequences, there is a warning at the end of Rise of Red about altering the fabric of time, and Wicked Wonderland actually follows through on that instead of ignoring it like a lot of sequels do.
Kylie Cantrall as Red and Malia Baker as Chloe are still the heart of the story, and their chemistry is honestly one of the strongest parts of the whole franchise at this point and what I liked here is that Red isn't the same rough, unsure VK from before. In interviews, Cantrall talked about wanting to show a different side of Red compared to how she started off in Rise of Red, and you can actually feel that growth on screen, she is more confident now, more willing to own her identity instead of constantly measuring herself against Auradon's standards.
This time the setting shifts properly into Wonderland itself, with the story bringing back familiar faces alongside new characters, which gives the whole movie a different visual flavor from the earlier films that were mostly Auradon Prep hallways and dorm drama, wicked wonderland gives the designers a lot more room to play with color and chaos, and it shows.
Rita Ora as the Queen of Hearts and Brandy as Cinderella both return too, and their scenes together carry more weight than you would expect from a Disney Channel movie, there is real history between those two characters at this point, spanning multiple films, and it actually pays off emotionally instead of feeling like fan service for the sake of it.
If I'm being honest, the plot does slow down a bit in the middle, once the initial excitement of being back in this world wears off, some scenes feel like they're just there to set up songs rather than move the story forward, that is a fair criticism of the franchise as a whole though, not just this one movie, If you are watching Descendants for tight plotting, you are watching the wrong franchise, you are here for the music, the costumes, the drama between VKs and royals, and honestly, the chaos of it all.
Overall, Wicked Wonderland does what a good sequel should do, It builds on what came before instead of just repeating it, gives its leads room to grow, and does not take the easy way out with its ending, not perfect, but a solid, fun watch if you've been following Red and Chloe's story from the start.
