Greetings, Hive! A long time ago I heard about "Her" a movie in which a guy falls in love with an artificial intelligence, when I heard the premise what I did was to laugh and think that it must be a comedy or something like that. Years went by, and a few days ago while browsing on the internet I came across a more serious synopsis of this movie and it made me curious enough to watch it. What I found when I saw Her was not only that I was wrong to think it was a comedy film but that it’is a film that poses its premise in a quite intelligent way and makes you empathize with its protagonists.

So without any further ado, let's start with the review!

As I said at the beginning, the premise of this movie may seem like a joke, what kind of loser falls in love with an artificial intelligence? However the movie is smart and knows how to develop this without making it seem like a joke. We start with our protagonist Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) a man who makes a living writing love letters on demand to couples or families, Theodore looks quite sad and down, you can tell that there is something that is affecting him deeply, it turns out that Theodore separated from his wife, whom he considered the love of his life, and the only thing he has left of her are the memories of the life they had together. Then we are shown that the film is set in a not so distant future in which technology is much more integrated and automated than today’s; for example, to write an email all we need to do is to talk to our phone or operating system and dictate the text we want to send and that’s it, although today that may seems something not so distant or advanced, for 2013 (year when the film came out) it still seemed a great technological advance.

Following this order of ideas, that's why I say that the movie is very smart when it comes to contextualize itself because it takes the time to show us that Theodore is a guy who is extremely sad about his divorce and that the world in which the movie takes place is very technologically advanced.

After we have these two ideas raised, the plot progresses and shows us how Theodore is interested in a new artificial intelligence that he sees in an ad, so he decides to buy it. It’s here where Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson) appears, who describes herself as an artificial intelligence capable of learning about human behavior and that is even capable of feeling emotions. As the story unfolds, we see how the interaction between Theodore and Samantha becomes more and more "real", Samantha is not only his virtual assistant but she understands and listens to him, she cares about him, they make jokes and laugh together. At the beginning of the movie we saw how Theodore was a miserable guy, who had lost the will to live and was isolated in his sadness and the only ray of light he had were the memories of his life with his ex-wife, but when he meets Samantha this changes, Theodore starts to laugh again, he looks much happier, animated, he even starts to relate more with people and to enjoy life again.

Apart from this, the film also shows us that it isn’t just Theodore who is living the benefits of this new artificial intelligence, thousands or perhaps millions of people in the world are relating to their artificial intelligences, Theodore isn’t just a loser, this is real and is causing a change in the world. All the conditions are in place for Theodore and Samantha to "fall in love" because it feels incredibly "natural", however...

You don't need to have two postgraduate degrees from Harvard to know that this relationship can't end well, logically the main reason is that Samantha doesn't have a physical body, it's like falling in love from a distance but worse; in a long distance relationship you have the hope of someday meeting in person who you met on the other side of the phone, but in the case of Theodore and Samantha it's not like that, how do you transfer the consciousness of an artificial intelligence to the body of a human being? I know the movie takes place in the future, but the movie also tries to be realistic (and maybe a little cruel) since apparently that possibility is not yet within reach of the technology of that time.

But even though that's the romantic case and happy ending we all would like to see happen, I think the movie gives the right treatment to its characters. Let's remember that Theodore had just separated from his wife, and this had him mired in deep sadness, and even though all this changes when he meets Samantha and you could say that his relationship with her was what brought him out of that depression, I don't think it was that way. Objectively speaking, Theodore never stopped being alone (and the movie makes a lot of emphasis on this through the shots it gives to our protagonist), through his loneliness Theodore found himself again, he understood the things that were wrong with him and that led to the breakup to his previous marriage, he learned to enjoy life again and although Samantha seems the reason for all this, I think Samantha was the means through which he got over it and not the reason.

And, for me, this is a very powerful message that the movie leaves; there can be no love without loneliness, we cannot love someone else while detesting ourselves nor can we expect someone else to fix the wounds that someone else has left in us, we have to allow ourselves to be alone, if we don't focus on building ourselves from loneliness we will be condemned to repeat the same mistakes and patterns that put us there in the first place.

¡Saludos, Hive! Hace un buen tiempo escuché hablar de “Her” una película en la que un tipo se enamora de una inteligencia artificial, al escuchar la premisa lo que hice fue reírme y pensar que se debía tratar de una comedia o algo así. Pasaron los años, y hace unos días navegando por internet me encontré con una sinopsis un poco más seria de esta película y despertó la suficiente curiosidad en mí como para verla. Lo que me encontré cuándo vi Her no fue solo que estaba equivocado al pensar que era una película de comedia sino que es una película que plantea su premisa de una manera bastante inteligente y que te hace empatizar con sus protagonistas.

Así que sin más preámbulos, ¡comencemos con la reseña!

Como dije al principio, la premisa de esta película puede parecer un chiste, ¿Qué clase de perdedor se enamora de una inteligencia artificial? Sin embargo la película es inteligente y sabe de qué manera desarrollar esto sin que parezca un chiste. Comenzamos con nuestro Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) un hombre que se gana la vida escribiendo cartas de amor por encargo a parejas o familias, a Theodore se le ve bastante triste y decaído, se nota que hay algo que lo está afectando profundamente, pues resulta que Theodore se separó de su esposa, a quien consideraba el amor de su vida, y lo único que le queda de ella son los recuerdos de la vida que tuvieron juntos. Luego se nos muestra que la película está ambientada en un futuro no muy lejano en el que la tecnología está mucho más integrada y automatizada que hoy en día; por ejemplo, para escribir un email lo único que necesitamos es hablar con nuestro teléfono o sistema operativo y dictarle el texto que queramos enviar y listo, si bien al día de hoy parece algo no tan lejano o avanzado, para el 2013 (año en que salió la película) aún parecía un gran avance tecnológico.

Siguiendo este orden de ideas, es por eso que digo que la película es muy inteligente a la hora de contextualizarse a sí misma porque se toma el tiempo de mostrarnos que Theodore es un tipo que está sumamente triste por su divorcio y que el mundo en el que la película se desarrolla está muy adelantado tecnológicamente.

Luego de que tenemos estas dos ideas planteadas, la trama avanza y nos muestra como Theodore se interesa en una nueva inteligencia artificial que ve en un anuncio, así que decide comprarla. Es ahí donde aparece Samantha (voz Scarlett Johansson) quién se describe a sí misma como una inteligencia artificial capaz de aprender sobre el comportamiento humano y que incluso es capaz de sentir emociones. A medida que la historia se desenvuelve, vemos como la interacción entre Theodore y Samantha es cada vez más “real”, Samantha no es solo su asistente virtual sino que le entiende y le escucha, se preocupa por él, hacen chistes y se ríen juntos. Al principio de la película vimos como Theodore era un tipo miserable, que había perdido las ganas de vivir y que estaba aislado en su tristeza y el único rayo de luz que tenía eran los recuerdos de su vida con su ex esposa, pero cuándo conoce a Samantha esto cambia, Theodore comienza a reír de nuevo, se le ve mucho más feliz, animado, incluso comienza a relacionarse más con la gente y a disfrutar otra vez la vida.

Aparte de esto, la película también nos muestra que no es solamente Theodore quién está viviendo las bondades de esta nueva inteligencia artificial, miles o quizás millones de personas en el mundo están relacionándose con sus inteligencias artificiales, Theodore no es solamente un perdedor y ya, esto es real y está causando un cambio en el mundo. Están dadas todas las condiciones para que Theodore y Samantha se “enamoren” ya que se siente increíblemente “natural”, sin embargo…

No hay que tener dos postgrados en Harvard para saber que esta relación no puede terminar bien, lógicamente la razón principal es que Samantha no tiene un cuerpo físico, es como enamorarse a distancia pero peor; en una relación a distancia tienes la esperanza de algún día conocer en persona a quién conociste del otro lado del teléfono, pero en el caso de Theodore y Samantha no es así, ¿Cómo transfieres la consciencia de una inteligencia artificial al cuerpo de un ser humano? Sé que la película se desarrolla en el futuro, pero la película también trata de ser realista (y quizás un poco cruel) ya que al parecer esa posibilidad aún no está al alcance de la tecnología de esa época.

Pero a pesar de que ese es el caso romántico y final feliz que todos quisiéramos que sucediera, creo que la película le da el tratamiento justo a sus personajes. Recordemos que Theodore acababa de separarse de su pareja, y esto lo tenía sumido en una profunda tristeza, y a pesar de que todo esto cambia cuando conoce a Samantha y se podría decir que su relación con ella fue lo que le hizo salir de esa depresión, yo creo que no fue así. Objetivamente hablando, Theodore nunca dejó de estar solo (y la película hace mucho énfasis en esto a través de los planos que le da a nuestro protagonista), a través de su soledad Theodore se reencontró con el mismo, entendió las cosas que estaban mal en él y que llevaron a la ruptura a su matrimonio anterior, aprendió a disfrutar nuevamente de la vida y aunque Samantha parezca la razón de todo esto, yo creo que Samantha fue el medio a través del que él se superó y no la razón.

Y, para mí, este es un mensaje muy poderoso que deja la película; no puede haber amor sin soledad, no podemos amar a alguien más mientras nos detestamos a nosotros mismos ni podemos pretender que alguien arregle las heridas que otra persona haya dejado en nosotros, tenemos que permitirnos estar solos, si no nos enfocamos en construirnos a nosotros mismos desde la soledad estaremos condenados a repetir los mismos errores y patrones que nos pusieron allí en primer lugar.
