“Yo soy nada. Sin vida. Sin alma. Odiado y temido.
“I am nothing. Lifeless. Soulless. Hated and feared. I am dead to everyone. I am the monster that living men want to kill.” (Madero, 2015, p. 264). This is the phrase José Madero used to open the chapter "Bonanza" of his book "Pensándolo bien, pensé mal". In this chapter José Madero talks about how he felt back then when he was around 30 years old, narrating aspects such as the creative process, inspiration and other various anecdotes.
The album "Bonanza" turned 10 years old last March 20th, and I couldn't think of a better idea than to talk about it by doing a personal review and going through the songs of this great album. José Madero explains that his greatest inspiration, so to speak, was himself, but from a critical point of view in which he sought to look at his defects as a person from the outside and also to express his concerns in life. At that time he began to feel quite strange because, as he mentions, he had many friends of his own age who were married and had children, while he still could not settle down despite having been with several girls of which almost none of them were serious. That's why he got down to work, he talked to several of his friends (mostly women) and asked them what their biggest flaws were according to the criteria of each of his friends, getting several answers in which it was somewhat complicated to reach a conclusion, but he was able to do it after all. He asked his group mates if the main theme could be himself, to which they said there was no problem. After several inconveniences, creative and production problems, the album was released, being considered one of the best the band has done and probably with some of the most interesting lyrics of their discography.
Bonanza: Un retrato de José Madero/Bonanza: A Portrait of José Madero
*For this album they chose a more "Garage Rock" style, leaving aside the great arrangements and nuances of their previous work "Poétics", which was a great change in their musical style. "Bonanza" is a return to the usual, to what the band already had us used to since their beginnings, with rhythms and style similar to those of their first works such as "Arroz con Leche" and "La Revancha del Príncipe Charro". *
This can be appreciated in the first song "Huésped en casa propia" which feels like a pop punk style, a quite interesting song with a theme that talks about how the protagonist or the person singing no longer feels at all the same, he feels uncomfortable in his own abode, he feels like a stranger in his own land, with a group chorus that will also be present in the other songs. Perhaps representing the inner demons of the protagonist. In the song "Las mil y un camas" is a rather depressive but also strong song that reminds a lot to the themes of "Amantes Sunt Amentes" characteristic of the adolescent culture of that time, explaining how the protagonist has sought love through carnal relationships realizing that this only spends him more and more. La noche de la mesa triste has an interesting beginning and riff, being a theme that deals with how it is better to keep the meaning of the songs to free interpretation, as this "takes the magic out of them". "Envejecido en Barril de Roble" is one of the easiest to interpret, the protagonist feels melancholic because the only thing he can do is get drunk until he loses consciousness and forget about what depresses him, being one of my favorite songs and one of the best on the album. "Bella en mi cabeza para siempre" is an excellent song that starts out cheerful, but gradually becomes quite sad, here the group chorus appears again along with a sad lyric that talks about not waiting for what you want to happen, it's the protagonist waits for a call that he won't get and that he better go to sleep. "Romance en D Sostenido" is undoubtedly my favorite song of the whole album (and also the one I feel most identified with), it certainly has a pretty happy rhythm but a very very depressing lyric, which makes it contrast too much, where our protagonist lives and likes to create music a lot, but despite that he fails to be loved by anyone despite having a lot of love to give. "Consejo al espejo" could well be the song with the saddest lyrics, with a different style to what we had been presented throughout the album, the protagonist somehow seeks self-pity and tries to be a better person, that despite all the pain he has gone through, someday he will be rewarded. "Aforismos" is the most frenetic and intense song on the album, with lyrics that are strongly inspired by the book "The Portrait of Dorian Gray" which José Madero confessed that it marked him a lot in his life when he read it, identifying a lot with the protagonist, in which it is better to give in to temptation the pleasures that the body desires and needs no matter what others believe, being all hedonistic. And we end with "La Vida en el Barandal", which feels with a changed rhythm but with a very powerful lyric in my opinion, in which José Madero portrays truths and life lessons that he has learned over time, giving a review of his experience and also being a composite of all the rhythms that have been presented throughout the album.
Although it has a modest production, and the arrangements and style feel quite rustic, its concept and lyrics are impressive. The album seeks to show you who Pepe Madero is, who through all that frenetic noise and group choruses and fast-paced rhythms, is someone who is sentimentally broken. You can identify a lot with his lyrics if you are someone who doesn't feel so fulfilled with himself, some songs were boring to me like "oh ilusión" but you can understand what he wants to transmit. The album leaves aside feelings like anger and resentment and focuses more on reflection and sadness, showing that the best thing to do is to let go and let go so that bad memories don't consume us in the future. That's why I give it an 8.5/10, the album is amazing but it can't compare to how amazing and elaborate his previous work was. It is simply a reflection of not only Jose Madero, but most probably ourselves....
