Es de mi agrado informarles que Guillermo del Toro ha ganado el oscar a "Mejor película animada", convirtiéndose en el primer director en tener un premio a "Mejor director" y "Mejor película". La competencia de este año estuvo algo reñida, pero si en algo estamos de acuerdo (y perdonen si este genera cierta polémica) es que Disney en esta ocasión no se merecía el oscar. "Turning Red" es una gran película, incluso llegué a hacer una crítica sobre ella, pero peliculas como "Gato con botas 2" o esta se pudo sentir el gran esfuerzo que conllevó hacerlas, tanto en su historia como en su producción.

La producción de esta peli llevó más de 15 años. Guillermo había mencionado que desde siempre quería llevar a cabo una adaptación de la marioneta viviente. El proyecto se había empezado a desarrollar a mediados del 2008, pero debido a ciertos problemas como cambios de director,quizás algunos problemas de financiación y diferencias creativas, el proyecto se fue retrasando por un buen tiempo. Hasta que a mediados del 2022 salió el primer trailer que dejó las expectativas altas a muchos fanáticos (incluyéndome). Disney también sacó su adaptación de Pinocho, sin embargo, terminó siendo un copia y pega de la versión de los años 40´s, con algunos cambios algo controversiales como el hada madrina y su etnia, ligeros cambios en la historia, pero sobre todo ser un producto sin alma. En cambio, la versión de Guillermo, se sentía un mejor desarrollo y cariño por la historia del muñeco.

Adoro como la pelicula se toma demasiadas libertades creativas. La historia orginal ocurre entre los 1860´s y 1880´s, en cambio aquí, ocurre muchos años despues, espcificamente en los años 40´s durante el mandato de Mussolini quién dirigía a Italia a través de una ideología fascista, expresando ciertas características de la época y trayendo un toque singular a la historia. Al igual que en el relato original, Pinocho se comporta de forma ciertamente errática, desobedeciendo a su padre y siendo bastante flojo en ingenuo. Otro elemento es la forma en la que es construido, siendo que en muchas adaptaciones el ambiente es calmado e incluso tierno, pero aquí sus auras son mucho más terroríficas, pues Geppeto lo construye ebrio hasta la médula, con solo una oreja, clavos sueltos y una madera casi sin lijar, apenas y dándole boca y ojos, sin siquiera alguna pintura. El hada madrina, la cual tiene un aspecto sumamente extraño, recordando mucho a los verdaderos aspectos de los ángeles en la biblia.

A pesar de moverse y tener cierta autonomía de pensamiento, personjes como Podesta quienes lo ven como un soldado perfecto que puede morir y revivir cada cierto tiempo, el cual podría ser un arma clave para la guerra. Luego está el conde Volpe el cual lo ve como un fenómeno cuyo fin es entretener haciendo espectáculos y ganar mucho dinero a costa suya. Luego está su padre, el cual de alguna manera quería que fuera como su difunto hijo Carlo, para darse cuenta que era todo lo contrario a él. Elementos como estos me hacen recordar a esos niños que en ciertas ocasiones no suelen ser deseados y terminan estando con gente que solo les hace daño o los impulsan a hacer daño a los demás. Muestra también una critica a la guerra, en como los niños les gusta trabajar en equipo sin ningún tipo de discriminación, no como si ocurre con los adultos quienes prefieren perder un brazo a tener que unirse al que consideran ellos su "enemigo".

Temas como la mortalidad también se plasman aquí, ya que de niños no tenemos miedo a la muerte ya que o no la conocemos o no la terminamos de entender bien, nos sentimos inmortales en cierto punto, siendo ya durante la adolescencia donde lo único que queremos es explorar el mundo y disfrutar de las diferentes experiencias y sorpresas que puede traer la vida, las cuales no todas son muy buenas. El final de la peli es sublime, es de cierta forma ambiguo pero a la vez conclusivo, al final lo mejor es dejar ir y seguir adelante, disfrutar de la vida y de los seres queridos los cuales no sabemos en que momento podamos perder, un tema que se llegó a trabajar también en "Gato con Botas 2" y que no me hubiese molestado si ganaba el oscar también.

Puedo concluir a que en efecto, "Pinocchio" es una obra de arte, tanto por su animación stop-motion la cual en los últimos años estuvo algo ausente, junto con una historia que de verdad te deja pensando y que disfrutas de principio a fin. Se nota que el gran Memo dio todo lo que tenía para llevarla a cabo, y debo decir que el Oscar que ganó a mejor película se lo tiene más que merecido. Espero pronto volver a disfrutar de sus futuros proyectos o de historias similares a esta. La película nos demuestra a que en efecto la animación no tiene porque ser exclusiva para los niños, los adultos también pueden disfrutar de historias excelentes y para toda la familia sin tener que recurrir a malas palabras o insinuaciones de índole sexual, en resumidas cuentas, la vida es una sola y de alguna forma hay que disfrutarla con nuestros seres queridos el mayor tiempo que podamos.

Until mid 2022 when the first trailer was released, which left many fans (including me) with high expectations. Disney also released its adaptation of Pinocchio, however, it ended up being a copy and paste of the 40's version, with some controversial changes such as the fairy godmother and her ethnicity, slight changes in the story, but above all being a product without soul. On the other hand, Guillermo's version felt a better development and affection for the doll's story.

I love how the movie takes too many creative liberties. The original story takes place between the 1860's and 1880's, whereas here, it takes place many years later, specifically in the 1940's during the rule of Mussolini who was leading Italy through a fascist ideology, expressing certain characteristics of the time and bringing a unique touch to the story. As in the original story, Pinocchio behaves in a certainly erratic way, disobeying his father and being rather loose in naivete. Another element is the way he is constructed, being that in many adaptations the atmosphere is calm and even tender, but here his auras are much more terrifying, as Geppeto builds him drunk to the core, with only one ear, loose nails and an almost un-sanded wood, barely and giving him mouth and eyes, without even some paint. The fairy godmother, which has an extremely strange aspect, reminding us of the real aspects of the angels in the bible.

Despite moving and having some autonomy of thought, characters like Podesta who see him as a perfect soldier who can die and revive from time to time, which could be a key weapon for the war. Then there is Count Volpe who sees him as a freak whose purpose is to entertain by putting on shows and making a lot of money at his expense. Then there is his father, who somehow wanted him to be like his late son Carlo, only to realize that he was the opposite of him. Elements like these remind me of those children who on certain occasions are often unwanted and end up being with people who only hurt them or drive them to hurt others. It also shows a critique of war, in how children like to work as a team without any kind of discrimination, unlike adults who would rather lose an arm than have to join what they consider their "enemy".

Themes such as mortality are also captured here, since as children we are not afraid of death because we either do not know it or do not understand it well, we feel immortal at a certain point, being already during adolescence where the only thing we want is to explore the world and enjoy the different experiences and surprises that life can bring, which are not all very good. The ending of the film is sublime, it is somewhat ambiguous but at the same time conclusive, in the end the best thing to do is to let go and move on, enjoy life and the loved ones that we do not know at what point we may lose, a theme that was also worked in "Puss in Boots 2" and that I would not have minded if it won the Oscar as well.

I can conclude that indeed, "Pinocchio" is a work of art, both for its stop-motion animation which in recent years was somewhat absent, along with a story that really leaves you thinking and that you enjoy from beginning to end. You can tell that the great Memo gave everything he had to carry it out, and I must say that the Oscar he won for Best Picture is more than deserved. I hope soon to enjoy his future projects or stories similar to this one. The film shows us that animation does not have to be exclusively for children, adults can also enjoy excellent stories for the whole family without having to resort to bad language or sexual innuendo, in short, life is only one and somehow we have to enjoy it with our loved ones as long as we can.
