Juan of the dead was released in 2011 and it was a full-blown horror film, it also managed to diversify the theme of cinema in Cuba with a dystopian plot starring two lifelong vagabonds, who faced a horde of zombies that overnight they turned Havana into a field of battle, extermination and survival.
Juan de los Muertos se estrenó en 2011 y fue una película de terror en toda regla, también logró diversificar la temática del cine en Cuba con una trama distópica protagonizada por dos vagabundos de toda la vida, quienes se enfrentaron a una horda de zombis que de la noche a la mañana convirtieron a La Habana en un campo de batalla, exterminio y supervivencia.
The film, a co-production between Cuba and Spain, one of the first hooks that the director uses is to place the content of the film in the Cuban reality; which, contrary to improvement, has worsened over the years since the film's premiere.
La película, una coproducción entre Cuba y España, uno de los primeros ganchos que utiliza el director es situar el contenido del filme en la realidad cubana; la cual contrario a mejorar ha empeorado con los años desde el estreno del filme.
In Cuba the film was a total success among the public and the cinematographic circle. Theaters were packed during each show and there was even vandalism; glass doors were smashed in a Havana cinema by the public eager to see the film. On his international tour, Juan of the dead was also successful. It won the award for best Spanish-speaking foreign film at the 2013 Goya Awards, as well as the second Audience Award at the Fantastic Film Festival in Austin, United States.
En Cuba la película fue un éxito total dentro del público y el círculo cinematográfico. Los cines se abarrotaron durante cada función e incluso hubo vandalismo; rompieron puertas de cristales en un cine de la Habana por el público ansioso de poder ver el .filme. En su recorrido internacional, Juan de los Muertos también tuvo éxito. Ganó el premio a mejor película extranjera de habla hispana en los Premios Goya 2013, además el segundo Premio del Público en el Festival de Cine Fantástico en Austin, Estados Unidos.
Juan de los muertos today is an important reference in Cuban cinema and showed that this type of film can be made in the country. Juan de los muertos, es un hoy un importante referente del cine cubano y mostró que se puede hacer este tipo de filmes en el país. La isla siempre cuenta con sangre jóven o no tanto, interesados en abordar otros discursos un tanto alejados de las historias más revisitadas. Lamentablemente a lo largo de décadas anteriores, el cine puso el foco en la épica revolucionaria y también en sus antípodas.
