The film's story begins when the charismatic Stanton Carlisle (Bradley Cooper), wins the affection of the clairvoyant Zeena (Toni Collette) and her mentalist husband Pete (David Strathairn) at a traveling carnival. From here he creates a golden ticket to success using this newly acquired knowledge to fool the wealthy elite of 1940s New York society.
