Entering a film that paints a position on a subject is pleasurable. The artistic window of projection entertains and activates psychological processes to capture the message; it submits to reflection and critical thinking. This is how I recently lived the experience of enjoying The Power of the Dog, a film that has a good design in the execution of photography, music, direction, script, acting and plot, which you identify as a film that will remain imprinted in your memory. The following lines reflect my position and acceptance, but remember I am just another spectator who enjoys writing the experience, I am not a specialist in the review area.
The film The Power of the Dog is a social and psychological drama based on the 1920s, a time when male and female behaviors are punished by a power that manipulates and judges what is good and what is bad. The director Jane Campion, adapts the biography that bears the same title and gestate a work with the colors of the morality of the time and graphs the cold differences that exist on behaviors and actions on gender and status, but in the end there is a person who does something drastic that provides peace of mind.
The story narrates the life of two brothers of high economic position, responsible for a cattle ranch in Montana; men who are distinguished by their temperaments, qualities and interests. Phil (Cumberbatch) is a rude, petulant, selfish, impulsive and cruel man; on the other hand, George Burbank (Plemons) is a respectful, calm and kind man. Phil directs all his energy and rage to a widowed woman, Rose, who becomes his brother's wife, one of the reasons for the annoyance, she strips him of his brother's company. Another reason, rescued a phrase of Phil in a conversation with his brother George to justify an expression that from his point of view should not affect anyone, the one that makes mention: "it's time for him to make a life and become a normal person", referring to Rose's son, humiliating words for those who love what they are.
The cinematography begins with the key plot of the drama and ends with a proverb or verse that justifies the plot, hence the title. The scenarios draw a hostile and antagonistic content, since the beauty of the place, the photographs, costumes and shots are spectacular, but the whole composition creates a space for anxiety, torture and rejection towards Rose (Kirsten Dunst) George's wife, who has a son who is not to Phil's "liking". The theme of racial, gender and identity discrimination predominates; Phil's power is based on a secret that consumes him and leads him to create his own concept of intolerance that he wields against the vulnerable.
Unlike Phil, George speaks little, he is not afraid of his brother; he is looking for a future besides the ranch, in this arises the love of Rose (Kirsten Dunst), who arrives at the best moment of her desolate life. Rose has a grown son that Phil has decided to screw up, managing to create a distressing effect on Rose, so her son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee), a delicate, skilled and educated boy, perceives this change in the mother and decides to do anything to make his mother happy again. The cunning of a young man of weak appearance to carry out a morbid plan to bring back Rose's smile.
I like that the film has a slow pace to reveal the fictitious life at the right time. On the other hand, the aesthetic environment (costumes and objects) dances to the beat of natural colors that soften the reality. Fair dialogues that say a lot and exacerbated bodily reactions or fear in a high tone of frustration. The music provides the level of tension, starring the sound of strings that finish giving the context of a world that keeps secrets and a soft melody that closes the drama. Cumberbatch's performance (Phil) stands out because the role he takes on conveys his own displeasure that drains through a demeanor of masculinity that instills media and power. Then there is Kodi Smit-McPhee (Peter) a young man who conveys a role that walks between fragile and inner strength that ends up consummating a liberating power.
The drama exposes an issue that is still current, and that although society has evolved in the right of equality, but primitive prejudices still persist. The Power of the Dog shares the feelings of people who are rejected because of their sexual orientation; it also depicts the feeling of repressing identity, product of an environment that forces to be silent due to the gender standards set. I invite you to watch the film and do not miss the details as you are taken through paths and symbols (leather, fabric, piano, books, among others) of life that surprise you, a destructive behavior that begs for salvation.
