Procesión | Reseña y Opinión [ESP-ENG]

Review by @amandaj · 1587d · of Procession

Cinema is a useful tool for producers who wish to convey a message to the public, but there are also filmmakers who know how to use it therapeutically to help those who need it. The film genre is broad and also has multiple benefits to the viewer because in addition to entertain, share, reflect, drain and learn about a subject; at the same time serves as a vehicle for those who wish to star in their story in a therapeutic way. The documentary film Procession of 2021, brings together the aforementioned benefits, since the characters make the cinematographic art, the liberating instrument of oppression and in the moviegoer allows to internalize the process in understanding sensitive testimonies that need to be heard to heal and inform.

Greene is a filmmaker peculiar in creating sensitive documentaries on different real social issues that break people emotionally and psychologically; as for example Bisbee'17 is a production that the metaphors of the images and the argument are shocking, which I recommend. The same happens with the documentary Procession, this cinematography provokes impression because the director Greene lets the affected people that he observed in a conference tell and act out the facts as they remember them, assisted by theater therapy. Tthat is, Greene used the knowledge of cinema to represent the negative experiences, an aspect that I like, because it is to tell and guide from a strong, concise and fictitious look the repressed past to help heal wounds through the intervention of specialists. The film has everything in its favor, it has technicality and humanizing action in thinking about the suffering of the other to serve.

What is Procession about? I hope the title brings you closer to the topic. In short, it is about a group of 6 male victims of child sexual abuse who seek justice and explain their experience through rituals of clerical power in the United States. At first I anticipated thinking that it was a documentary where survivors tell the heartbreaking story of abusive priests, however, it breaks with the scheme from the beginning, there is a space to inform why the inspiration of the documentary was born to share with society, this allows then to see how each mourner of a life full of emotions and painful feelings, face demons through dramatic techniques. The plot is well structured, it is like watching Spotlight, but healing, about old abuses that require justice, while the abused male children have a dissociated adult life.

How does Procession develop? It has a fluid thread, roles are assumed, telling that which is fixed in thought and expressing it to the world without causing pity; an aspect that I understood, there were no tears in me, but I valued men who needed to talk to the buried child. The infant stage, which had to be a beautiful and fundamental piece in the adult maturity, has subtracted sense of the life and the nightmares, rages and insecurities take the reins of the existence.

The positive aspect of the documentary is the brotherhood, connecting the feelings of the 6 men, the support among them to collaborate in representing the script built by each one, being listened to and redirected through the reflection of the companions and the therapist. The hugs to soothe the pain and congratulate the progress in overcoming the past, one step at a time. Also, it is valid to recognize the professional team, lawyers, therapist, actor and director, celebrating the personal progress of the survivors to have contact with what they abhor, really touching.

Another aspect, which coincides, is to learn not to blame the relatives, because in the end this phenomenon breaks the harmony of coexistence; this perspective, is difficult to accept because both sides (subject and family), product of belief, determines that something is wrong. I understand that the evil is in the person who abuses the power to manipulate and not be trapped by judicial and Catholic laws, both are barriers to justice.

The music of the documentary Procesión is instrumental, ecclesiastical and sober, however, the spontaneous and structured dialogues are the strength of the stories. The scenarios and places were not something aesthetic to admire, but rather depended on the possibility of reproducing a space to dramatize, to approach the episode where the obscene began; a visual work of the 6 men who helped each other and the professional film crew directed. Each story told has its weight; however, the last 2, for me, have the explosion of emotions, crying, anger and surprises. I really enjoyed the documentary to see how the cinema orchestrated beyond the art of production, in helping this group that wanted a change of behavior and correct attitudes that were fabricated through the association of stimuli, confrontation is necessary and somatization is inevitable.

Why should I watch Procession? Filmmaker Greene made a hopeful work, where the interrupted childhood is liberated; it offers the opportunity to win over the trauma through therapy and the recording cameras are the means of information. It is a documentary of construction from intimate and group dialogues that make a catharsis during the procession; achieving change in mastering the pain of child sexual abuse, although, there is no answer for one of them, when he asked the question "What do God and Jesus Christ think about that?".

Documentary highly praised by critics, it is shot in a sober way, but it is very emotional, a success the use of metalanguage and art as a form of therapy in the face of horrendous events.
