Due to my insisting that this show should be experienced, there will be no spoilers during this review. If you don't want that and would rather just know the review, I give this show a 9/10. There will be no recap in this post, just a spoiler-free description of the show's atmosphere that makes this show, in my opinion, the best thing on TV right now.
What Do Rich People Want When The Party Is Over?
Most of the main cast in the show have a past that should have gotten them in prison, during the show, that doesn't exactly change. At the end of the first season, for example, one of the main characters ends up....... Like I said, no spoilers. Just watch it, it is a really good show. One that isn't about superheroes or virtue signaling.
So before the show, some events happened that we learn about during the show, that shows us the power of money. Most of the characters have done it all, including some disturbing things. Yet, they remain untouched. You see, for regular folx like us, partying or misdeeds are a way to let out steam. What if your life is filled with fancy cars, million-dollar parties, the best hotels, food, wine, and celebrities at the end of your phone? What's next?
For regular people that's the dream but what happens when you reach it? What happens after the high of getting everything you want wears off? What do you seek? Well, more. The way to make up for the high of having a fancy car wearing off is by purchasing another. And the way for having a highly-respected and sought-after job to improve is having an even better job. And that's the struggle here, there's this one position left to have, just one. And when you lack the social abilities for anything else, that one thing becomes your obsession.
That's what it is for the main characters when the party is over, all the fancy clothes have been worn, all the expensive watches have been shown off, the next party might be as good but will never be better, attempting to do so will often lead to foolishness.
In a way, you feel like all these characters are trapped in the world in which they live. Despite having everything, the only way to go is toward the sun, even if it means having their wings melting.
The Power of Unprocessed Emotions
While we do see a range of emotions in the show, it is often shown by the characters in the context of chasing their ultimate goals. Feelings are bottled, they're rarely shown. All you know is their ultimate goal, but discovering how each character would pursue is something you have to do with each episode. When you aren't aware of someone's emotion at any given time, you have no way of knowing at what emotional stage they are, therefore, you have no way of knowing their course of action.
Any path toward a healthy mental state is met with ridicule, rejection, coldness, or met with the prospect of having such emotions or secrets leading to dire consequences. You always see the need to speak out in each character at certain times during the show. All of these factors lead to deflections, ironic responses, and any further attempt would lead to even more of both.
The show triggers a different emotion than what other shows dared to pursue, frustration. Any personal breakthrough is blocked by a wall. Emotions are met ridicule, often by the show cosmic itself. There's only one place to go, and to reach it you have to be numb, merciless, heartless, and emotionless. The characters often realize that, but always lack the mental maturity to let go.
In Conclusion.
I already said I rate this show a 9/10. From the theme music itself, the acting, the directing, you could always feel something is wrong or something could go wrong at any given moment. Any emotions that you could relate to are blocked soon after. The frustrating brilliance of the show is that while everything could have and should have changed at any moment, nothing ever does.
The show is a visual manifestation of a black hole, once you're inside it, there's no way out. And that to me is what makes this show the best show I have seen on TV in a long time. A Show with three seasons so far, that you may want to catch up with.
