The Impossible is inspired by shocking real history, and was directed by Juan Antonio Bayona and earned an Oscar nomination for best actress for Naomi Watts.
In 2004, the members of the Belón family came to the conclusion that they needed a vacation, and were going to relax and enjoy the time in peace, and the family's chosen destination was Thailand, a heavenly place, what seemed like a dream turned into a huge nightmare. shortly after the family witnessed the third earthquake in the history of that place, they were simply surprised by a catastrophe.
How did it all happen?
On December 26th it seemed like a quiet afternoon, while Maria slept peacefully in a hammock on the veranda, next to her eldest son, Lucas, her husband Enrique Alfonso and the other children, Thomas and Simão playing in the pool of the luxurious resort right by the sea, all very calm and excited about that place, peace reigned.
That day what they did not expect is that the third largest earthquake in the history of mankind would take place. There was a convergence of tectonic plates that triggered a series of tsunamis across continents bathed in the Indian Ocean, and the tsunami in turn caused the death of more than 230,000 people in 14 different countries and flooded coastal cities with waves reaching up to 30 meters in length. height, something totally out of the ordinary, it’s even difficult to know how to escape.
Everyone was taken by surprise until then, and the fury of the sea separated the relatives for two long days ... Maria was taken by surprise, woke up being dragged alone by the violent waters, and soon managed to cling to a tree, her crying would come out compulsively, she knew how difficult it would be to get out of that nightmare.
Hours later on top of the tree Maria sees Lucas floating in the water and went down to rescue him, and from that she began to have hope, the faith that she needed so much to hold on came up. Mother and son started looking for a high place to protect themselves, because they didn't know what could happen anymore, only that the woman was losing a lot of blood, and the son had to help her walk.
While walking in the middle of the way, they heard the cry of a child under some debris, and offered to help that little one who was there alone and all scared by everything that had happened.
Feeling a lot of pain, Maria could hardly walk and Lucas helped her mother to walk, it was then that she found a tree so they could climb and be safe from possible waves, and her brave son who had to endure carrying it to the top.
The wait was long until they were successfully rescued by residents of a village who went to see the damage in the region, and Belón (Maria) was carried to the hospital along with her son Lucas and the other child. While the rescued little boy stayed in another part of the hospital because he had few injuries, Lucas remained beside his mother, who was then hospitalized, had wounds all over her body, especially a large cut on her leg, and was very ill.
Maria then asked her son Lucas to help the lost family members of people who asked for help, and he managed to get a father to find his son again. After two and a half days of searching, Lucas found his brothers again and took them to his mother, who did not believe in the miracle that had just happened: her family was reunited and well.
As Maria's health improved, she was transferred to a hospital in Singapore before returning home.
Critique:
Very impressive film from beginning to end, a work that the actors manage to demonstrate very well what happened in the tragedy, and an absurd empathy for these characters is created. Technically the film is exquisite, the photography and the color and contrast work are excellent. The camera is very well conducted, putting us into the most dramatic moments as if we were watching everything next door.
The fascinating history of the Belóns became a film in 2012, and even today the family promotes lectures telling about the traumatic experience of what it was like to survive a tsunami. At the same time, the importance of family and perseverance during the most difficult times is also reinforced.
