The first rule of "Fight Club" was we are not talking about Fight Club, the second was: we are not talking about Fight Club and I think it is exactly the same as Netflix in the case of the 13 Reasons Why series.
From the first season it was said that this is a very brave, needed production, which without embellishments shows the reality of modern teenagers in the USA. It's just that the more discussed the 13 Reasons Why, the less Netflix wanted to talk about the show. The platform recently removed the most controversial scene: suicide from season 1. The 3rd season actually appeared without any promotional campaign. Reviewers and journalists also did not receive screeners, which is quite surprising because they were released earlier. After watching season 3 I have the impression that this is the result of low quality production.
The series premiered on August 23, with regret I wrote that this season is weak because in discussions with friends I strongly defended the 2nd season (unfortunately I was not so strongly involved in Steemit, therefore no review appeared here). I thought that its creation was strongly justified, important and conveying important issues.
I admit at the outset that watching 13 episodes of the third season was a torment for me. It is a blow to me because 13 Reasons Why I considered as a valuable series in which you can take up many topics, raise important issues. And I have the impression that the creators are lost in what and how they want to convey. 13 Reasons Why in previous seasons has proved that it can be different genres at once. We had a young adult here, drama, court drama, currently it trying to be a detective story, but it is dangerously drifting towards soap opera.
The new season seems chaotic, the first episode is hard to get through. The creators have invented that at the same time introduces 2 time planes, a new important character and make it the narrator of the whole. The whole process is very clumsy, diverting attention from the main theme of this series. In addition, the new heroine is so annoying that it is difficult not to ask yourself whether the series would not gain if it were not abandoned the narrative of off. There is also a strong leitmotif because it is hard to believe that viewers will care about the fate of a multiple rapist who, in addition, was not criminally responsible for his actions. It's about Bryce Walker, who becomes the victim in season 3. I will not spoiler but I think the creators themselves in the trailer spoiler enough. This hero was created for two seasons for a character to the bone of evil, whose fate we are not interested in, is a villain, so it is really difficult to care about his fate. And he is at the center of all events. Anyway, what bothers most is the twist on Bryce. Why did the creators decide to rehabilitate a character so clearly built as an irreformable villain, do we really need another series where the torturer is more important than his victims and forgives him more because he had problems at home?
Until now, the series was not without flaws, but at least it had the courage to tackle difficult topics, currently they do not sound in any way. They are thrown without any relation to events and there is not much left of them. The level of pathology is high, it is difficult to bear it, some threads are heavily pulled, others are pulled out too quickly. It bothers, it was supposed to be a detective story, it was to be a mystery, coherence of the plot and everything stuck together by the narrative of the heroine from off, which is omniscient, spoils the effect. Once this narrator was Hannah, whose presence was justified by the story here, the character from nowhere was introduced as her substitute to balance male and female characters.
I also have a lot of ethical doubts, 13 Reason Why is trying to moralize, show the differences between good and evil, and I have the impression that for a series with such a profile, it approaches the issue of guilt, responsibility and consistency in the 3rd season very strangely.
To sum up: the new episodes are tiring excess. Excess threads, suspicions, dramatic stories and exaggerated emotions, everything that has been a strength so far has become the biggest disadvantage. It looks caricatured, sometimes gibberish and sometimes even boring, that it's hard to get to the end of the episode. Of course, it's not like the series has stopped addressing these most important social issues this season, there are several very important topics such as teenage pregnancy, abortion, bulling, rape but they blur in a maze of intrigue, chaotic investigation and general narrative chaos, which dominates.
While the 2nd season was justified and had a clear thread that led, the 3rd season, it was not necessary, and the next announced season 4, which is to end the story, was even more so.
Excess, pathos, and multitude of dramas occurring at once in one place causes the effect of glut and even ridicule. Until recently, I considered 13 Reasons Why as one of the valuable young adult series that are being made and I was able to forgive a lot. The creators wanted to convey something, they had an idea to lead the story, now the series has become a caricature. Netflix censors the most controversial scenes, I get the impression that it even wants to end these productions. We have a stalemate. I absolutely do not recommend season 3, I got tired mentally and physically.
