The "Narcos" series has maintained a high level since the first season. For most viewers, the show is associated with the person of Pablo Escobar because it all started with him. But from the beginning, the creators of the series stressed that production will not focus on one hero. It shows a problem, it's like an anthology, it focuses on the history of individual cartels, criminal organizations that deal with drug trafficking.
However, it must be admitted that the seasons have been interconnected so far, and the fourth edition of the series entitled "Narcos: Mexico" is a completely new story, new heroes, new scenery. In principle, it is not whether it is the next season or maybe the spin-off of the original series. I read on the internet that it is a companion series that is a production taking place in the same universe. From spin-off it differs that it was not built around a specific hero from the original, but it was made on a separate idea. "Narcos: Mexico" with previous seasons combines not only the subject matter and the first part of the title. It was written by the same screenwriters, the same team is responsible for the production and the director responsible for the first season of "Narcos".
Here the question arises whether "Narcos: Mexico", which debuted on Netflix on November 16, the first 10 episode season keeps the level of the original?
In my opinion, definitely YES. What I noticed in the first place is the freshness of the series, which, although it repeats a well-known formula, does it in a surprising way. The action takes place in Mexico, we have a different atmosphere, different colors, and the style of filming in my mind refers to the classic cinema, like "Traffic" Steven Soderbergh. A new cast appears, with two main characters: DEA agent Kiki Camaren, played by Michael Peña and Félix Gallardo, played by Diego Luna. Both were well-mannered, creating ambiguous characters in which fate is easy to get involved. If we consider that since Wagner Monr as Escobar, "Narcos" had a problem finding actors who could match it, I think that the Peña-Luna duet has finally filled that gap. Interestingly, both heroes are rather introverts, and Felix Gallardo gives the impression of a man without character, but maybe that's what it was about.
The plot is a moral-historical series rather than a sensational-criminal series. Especially at the very beginning we have very large exhibitions and slow building of action. Those who count on explosions and riots are disappointed. This is not the season. The 10 episodes are aimed at bringing us to the next season in which judging after the end, there will be definitely more going on. For now, the creators focused on presenting the new world, showing nuances and telling the story of the first Mexican cartel in the history of the drug. Currently, Mexican cartels are the most dangerous criminal organizations in the world, but this has not always been the case. In comparison with Colombians, they look like amateurs who trade grass.
Due to the slow course of the narrative, the emphasis on details, facts, the lack of energy known from the first season of "Narcos". I will not hide that I was drawn into the story, watching the last few episodes, because of the attachment to the characters was difficult, exciting. But in my opinion it is a proof of the high level of the scenario, which is very well thought out, logical constructed.
"Narcos: Mexico" reflects of the original, the beginning of a new thread on a proven formula, in the new scenery, with new photos gave this production some freshness. More attention was focused on details, history is more nuanced thanks to this better reflects the historical realities. The heroes are in prisons, or worse, in the wild. Therefore, I am looking forward to the continuation and new heroes. I am very happy that "Narcos: Mexico" maintains a good level of the previous series, which only bodes well for the future of the whole universe.
