We have seen countless adaptations of William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet", some modern, some medieval, but this reinterpretation has a quite different premise: We are told everything from the perspective of Romeo's ex. Yes, just as you read it, this story tells us a bit of Romeo's life before meeting Juliet and how they meet and how this affects his previous girlfriend.
Set in its original era the story tells us about the life of Rosaline (Kaitlyn Dever from Ticket to Paradise), a girl of marriageable age who ignores the suitors her family gets her because she is in a secret relationship with Romeo, who belongs to the enemy family to hers, the Montagues. So they cannot have a "normal" relationship. As fate would have it, Rosaline does not make it to a date with Romeo and there he meets Juliet, falling in love with her at first sight. Rosaline will then do the impossible to separate them.
The movie is an absurd and overly cartoonish thing but that makes it very fresh and very easy to watch. Despite being set in the Middle Ages its soundtrack has contemporary pieces like "This will be", "Dancing on my own", "All by myself" that although they have not been modified to sound like the music of that time as in Bridgerton do not dissonance with the story, in fact, they help it by taking away its seriousness and bringing it closer to what would be a rom-com of today. Also, we get hints of modernity every time Rosaline's nanny insists that she is a registered nurse, this is one of the characters besides Rosaline that adds the most to the story, she is very comical.
Another thing that I think is quite remarkable is the great job done by Kaitlyn Dever giving life to Rosaline, we have this girl full of temperament and life, with sarcastic comments and a lot of spark and who does everything motivated by love. The performance of Sean Teale (who we know from Reign) as Dario, one of Rosaline's suitors and limit setters, is also of relevance.
In closing, the story leaves us with a beautiful reflection on relationships, happiness and first love. I was quite surprised by the movie and I recommend watching it, I give it 4/5.

Hemos visto infinidad de adaptaciones de "Romeo y Julieta" la obra de William Shakespeare, algunas modernas, otras del medioevo pero esta reinterpretación tiene una premisa bastante diferente: Nos cuentan todo desde la perspectiva de la ex de Romeo. Si, así como lo leyeron, esta historia nos cuenta un poco de la vida de Romeo antes de conocer a Julieta y como se conocen y como esto afecta a su novia anterior.
Ubicada en su época original la historia nos cuenta la vida de Rosaline (Kaitlyn Dever de Ticket to Paradise), una chica en edad casadera que no le hace caso a los pretendientes que le consigue su familia porque está en una relación secreta con Romeo, quien pertenece a la familia enemiga a la suya, los Montesco. Por lo que no pueden tener una relación "normal". Por cosas del destino Rosaline no alcanza a llegar a una cita con Romeo y ahí este conoce a Julieta, enamorandose a primera vista de la misma. Rosaline hará entonces hasta lo imposible por separarlos.
La película es una cosa absurda y exageradamente caricaturesca pero eso la hace muy fresca y muy fácil de ver. A pesar de ser ambientada en el medioevo su soundtrack tiene piezas contemporáneas como "This will be", "Dancing on my own", "All by myself" que a pesar de que no han sido modificadas para que suenen como la música de ese entonces como en Bridgerton no disuenan con la historia, de hecho, la ayudan quitándole seriedad y acercandolo a lo que sería un rom-com de hoy día. Asímismo, tenemos pistas de la modernidad cada vez que la nana de Rosaline insiste en que es enfermera registrada, este es uno de los personajes aparte de Rosaline que mas aportan a la historia, es muy comica.
Otra cosa que creo es bastante destacable es el gran trabajo hecho por Kaitlyn Dever dándole vida a Rosaline, tenemos esta muchacha llena de temperamento y vida, con comentarios sarcásticos y mucha chispa y que hace todo motivada por el amor. La actuación de Sean Teale (a quien conocemos por Reign) como Darío uno de los pretendientes y personas que le ponen limites a Rosaline, también es de relevancia.
Como cierre la historia nos deja una reflexión bastante bonita sobre lo que son las relaciones, ser feliz y el primer amor. La película me sorprendió bastante y recomiendo verla, le doy 4/5
