This is a shocking film, which shows the barbarity of racism and of a society that, although many years have passed since the fact narrated, maintains the mentality of the supremacy of the white race.
On this basis of exclusion and hatred, the nation that today is the world's leading power has risen and films on the subject have flooded theaters around the world for years, however, beyond some recognition and the creation of an awareness campaign, similar events continue to occur today.
This production is based on Solomon Northup's autobiographical book Twelve Years a Slave, published in 1853, and the film takes its name from it.
Was made by John Ridley and it captured the historical fact faithfully, for which it won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
The plot revolves around the life of Solomon, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, a free black man living in Washington who is kidnapped on his way to a job interview in 1841 and taken to the South where he is sold into slavery and suffers the horrors of abuse by his supposed masters until 1853.

In twelve years he is sold to four plantation owners and in each one the situation is similar, until a Canadian carpenter named Samuel Bass, played by Brad Pitt and in disagreement with slavery, decides to help him by sending a letter to his relatives and this starts the search and final finding of the man.
This was not a big budget film, so it is assumed that it was recorded more as a way to attract attention than to have any impact in theaters, however the 20 million invested were transformed into almost 190 million that left this production at the box office.

It also won three Oscars: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong'o) and Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as the Golden Globe Award for Best Dramatic Film and the BAFTA Award, among others.
Its leading actor was also nominated but did not win Best Actor, but did win the BAFTA and BET awards.

The critics' opinion of the third film directed by actor Steve Queen was positive, highlighting its faithfulness to the facts and its production values, as well as the exterior shots taken on four historic Antebellum plantations: Felicity, Magnolia, Bocage, and Destrehan.
Undoubtedly, it is a film that stirs diverse feelings where the predominant ones are pain and rage.
