Remember when Final Fantasy: The Force Within came out? We didn't know what was going on. We liked what we saw, but few people understood the film.
Now, years later, I look back and realise how much we've evolved in this respect - I was a kid back then, but Final Fantasy was a confusing film.
Now, thanks to the advent of the internet, we've seen a wide variety of films and, more importantly, we've gained a mastery of Asian cinema, which allows us today to consider Final Fantasy as a much more accessible and understandable film.
The animation is brutal and certainly a step forward, consolidating the first effort to create photorealistically animated people. Nowadays some details are starting to show up that could be improved, but back then that was unheard of.
Although the main character's hair still makes you wonder, Aki is far more interesting than his stereotypical character advertises.
But Final Fantasy is first and foremost a very adult film. If at any point you thought playing Final Fantasy would help you, you were wrong.
The film could have been released with a different title, but they wanted to capitalise on the success of Square's games. But there seems to be something else at the heart of this story.
We see the new Mother Gaia ecological storyline used often in its full glory. Perhaps if things had a slightly more ‘medieval’ feel to them, we'd have a film that had more to do with the story of the video game.
In any case, the film is fun and serious enough to please any viewer.
Both those looking for a pure sci-fi visual spectacle and those looking for a serious and meaningful work will find their needs met with a film that is logically paced (it could have done with some improvement at the end) and less childish than the first part.
