This intriguing Australian sci-fi film, loosely based on the novel Solitaire by Kelley Eskridge and directed by Ben C. Lucas, who co-wrote the adapted screenplay with Gregory Widen and Kelley Eskridge, plunges us into a near future where virtual reality technology has reached new frontiers.
The plot revolves around Ren Amari, played by Jessica De Gouw, a brilliant scientist who has developed a substance called "OtherLife".
This revolutionary substance allows users to experience intense and exciting virtual reality in just seconds, as opposed to the hours it normally takes.
Ren and her team work hard to perfect OtherLife and market it as a cutting-edge form of escapism and entertainment, however, things go awry when an experiment goes wrong and Ren is forced to make difficult decisions that have unexpected consequences.
As the plot unfolds, we enter a dark and twisted world where the line between reality and virtual reality begins to blur.
Ren is faced with a moral dilemma and is torn between the ethical limits of his invention and the repercussions it has on society.
The film leads us to reflect on issues such as scientific responsibility, the limits of technology and the implications of manipulating the human mind.
As Ren struggles to find the truth and redeem himself, we witness how virtual reality can have both a positive and negative impact on our lives.
"OtherLife is a film that challenges our perceptions and immerses us in a deep reflection on ethics and the consequences of our actions. With an intriguing narrative and captivating performances, it leads us to question the power and reach of technology in the near future.
In addition to Jessica De Gouw, the film stars T.J. Power as Sam, Thomas Cocquerel as Danny, Liam Graham as Jared Amari, Hoa Xuande as Coder #1, Shalom Brune-Franklin as Coder #2, Clarence Ryan as Byron Finbar and Tiriel Mora as Dr. Amari.
It premiered at the Sydney Film Festival (Australia) on 16 June 2017.
Personally I consider it an excellent choice that fulfils the purpose of entertaining and reflecting on the future of technology, taking into account its release date with the present day.
