The Substance is a film whose main thesis is to show the emptiness and superficiality of modern life. The protagonist, in both bodies, is a person so useless and empty that she has no life outside the world of the film, that being seen, loved and loved is not only the most important thing for her, but the only thing. She is everything, she is herself, life. This idea and critique is the best part of the whole film.

As any viewer can imagine, the obsession with public admiration forces the main characters to make radical decisions, revealing what happens every day in modern life: people will do anything to have a young and beautiful body, nothing else matters.

Friendship, love, family, spiritual life, everything is zero that is better than nothing, here everything revolves around beauty, youth and beauty again.

It is a true expression of how dark is the life of all those who lose their freedom and autonomy, letting themselves be dragged into a spiral of falsehood and vulgarity.

Although this proposal is an interesting social critique, unfortunately it remains just that. This is because a critically acclaimed script is not half of what we have to offer, or at least what the Cannes awards would have us believe.

Don't expect strong thoughts, deep personalities or clever, complicated situations. It was a script of few words but he tried to stand up for himself, his role in the film was never big, maybe not even the smallest.

Technically, this is a perfect film, but again, it is a classic case of cinema prioritizing cool looks, over-the-top style and intensity over artistic substance.

Thus, The Substance is a film with excessive cuts, countless shots and close-ups of Margaret Qualley's body, which, though very beautiful, becomes very heavy-handed and even tasteless.

The scene is also dull, as the film could easily have said the same thing in a much shorter period of time, which is somewhat offset by the final scene, which although exaggerated and visceral is still very enjoyable and very clear, do what you want to do.
