Director of week #1: James Wan

It's no secret that the genre of terror has been in decline in recent years, most films that try to stand out fail because they focus on a type of terror that no longer scares, a classic terror that already saw its best moment pass. However, there are still creative directors who continue trying to establish their own version of terror through stories told little by little and that catch us through the wonderful way in which they develop, that's why one of my favorite directors and who I decided to choose to participate in the contest is James Wan, a highly innovative director and who built a mini horror universe from The Conjuring.

[Source](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/138843-the-conjuring?language=en-US) # The Conjuring is a film that focuses on exploring the different mysteries that a couple of spiritual consultants/ ghost hunters face through the dozens of cases and mysteries they are pushed to investigate. In this film, we will see how a couple of paranormal investigators plunge into the mystery that is lashing the life of a family, a family that sees how their life is being tormented by a demonic entity determined to kill them and make their life a living hell. The whole process of paranormal investigation carried out by the husband and wife is really incredible because we see how these make recordings and spectral analyses that increase the rhythm of the film giving it a wonderful suspense tone, a suspense tone that makes it different because the whole matter of the evil spectrum is slowly developed so that nothing gets out of control and so that we feel the tense atmosphere that covers most of the scenes in the film.

Undoubtedly this is not a film with a super different plot, but it is a different horror film because we see how slowly the characters respond to different situations that make them panic and especially succumb to a spirit determined to torment a family and their children for no apparent reason. As I said the plot is not the best, but if it has many details that make it different, details that allow it to develop at a different pace and above all be really scary, something that a horror film must focus on to succeed. Here the frightening elements are the simplest, subtly placed elements for the film to place the characters in memorable situations where the whole suspenseful atmosphere takes over the scenes.

There are few films that manage to transmit such a constant rhythm through a simple story where a demonic ghost wants to kill a family and that is what makes this a great film, the fact that through audiovisual resources it manages to put together a whole world of possibilities where we will see our emotions startle and be exposed by really intense scenes that will make the less brave cover their eyes.

The Conjuring undoubtedly represents the definition of what is right in a horror movie, a movie that not only uses sudden camera movements to scare us, this is a movie that plays with our minds through a plot full of psychological manipulations that unleash all kinds of reactions in us, a movie that makes a harmonious use of sound effects to increase suspense even in the simplest scenes so that the suspense remains constant without the need to play with the plot making it more complex than necessary.
