Finally, it's been two weeks since Reza Rahardian, one of Indonesia's best actors, came to Deddy Corbuzier's podcast to report that he was a cast member in a film by Edwin adapted from a novel by Eka Kurniawan, namely: Vengeance is mine, all others pay cash.
I watched it in one of the cinemas in my area. With 35,000 idr, I satisfied my expectations for this film. This film is my version of the best Indonesian film in this year. With a very new film style, making this film feel like a breath of fresh air, set in the 80s, makes this film very difficult to understand for Generation Z. This is one of the Indonesian films that are labeled 18+ or only for adults who dare to play in a zone that is rarely touched by filmmakers. This film is one of the best adult films I've ever watched, especially for Indonesian films. I highly recommend watching this film for film lovers.
Synopsis..
The story is very simple, it tells the story of a man named Ajo Kawir (played by Marthino Lio) who is good at fighting without being afraid of anyone, then he likes a girl named Iteung (Ladya Cheril) who is also good at fighting and they fall in love. But the problem is not only that, Iteung also has a secret admirer, namely Budi Baik, played by Reza Rahardian. The conflict centers on this character.
This film is very authentic with the 80s and all supported by very authentic properties and settings. In this film, there are many properties from the 80s, such as vintage motorbikes, wardrobes, old cars and many other things. The shooting technique and the way the actors speak are also very authentic with the 80s era. For those who were teenagers in the 80's, it would be very relatable to the setting of this film, especially for my parents.
Then the choreography in this film is also very good, indeed this film was made with the very intention to meet the expectations of the audience. Especially when the momentum of Ajo Kawir's meet with Iteung when they got into a fight was really very good, especially to the point of fighting on the sand and the scene with Iteung smacking Ajo Kawir's head which looked very real.
Issue..
In this film, there is the most important issue, namely the issue of masculinity. It's not just a matter of fighting a fight, it's also about how the male sex works. This film tells, Ajo Kawir who is very good at fighting is a man who can't get an erection, because his past is very dark. But besides that, there is Iteung who is a woman who can avenge her lover, Ajo Kawir, by using her abilities in fighting.
The thing that makes me very mindblowing is that the director is able to present various genre elements in one film such as action, drama, comedy and even mystical which makes it very stunning. It is very different from the previous films of the wench such as “Possessive” and “Aruna Dengan Lidahnya” The supporting actors are also great, because they are played by character actors such as Piet Pagau (uncle gembul), Christine Hakim (Mak Jerot), Lukman Sardi (Codet) and many other actresses and actors that I cannot mention one by one.
There were so many memorable scenes that were very well conveyed by the cast, such as when Mak Jerot licked Ajo Kawir's genitals, then Ajo Kawir's fight with Budi Baik's group, there was even a very interesting scene for me, when Ajo Kawir fought a race to get the money in the bottle. to pay for his treatment with Mak Jerot. This scene is very identical to the story I've heard from my father about his past as a teenager who likes wild racing. Very perfectly visualized.
The 18+ scene is also very shocking, beyond my expectations, because I have never seen this scene in other Indonesian films, although it looks vulgar, it still fits into the storyline and message of this film.
The shortcomings of this film are very minor, the consequences of a film adapted from a novel will take a lot of time. As a result, many viewers find it difficult to digest the plot of this film. And also the introduction and deepening of the cast, feels rushed. The background of the characters is not detailed, which reduces the perfection of this film.
That's all the review of the film from Vengeance is mine, all others pay cash, because the film is still very fresh and on-going at your favorite cinema, it's better to watch it directly with popcorn and soft drinks.
See you in the next one.
