THE BAD: Some characters were left as ornaments or lame
Hola queridos cinéfilos en esta ocasión les traigo la reseña de una miniserie muy popular en los últimos años: White Lotus y que tuve la oportunidad de ver recientemente. Cuenta con dos temporadas, pero de momento solo hablaremos de la primera que tiene apenas 6 capítulos muy interesantes.

SINOPSIS | SYNOPSIS
“Las vacaciones más extrañas de tu vida están por comenzar”, es la oración con la que quiero describir esta serie. La cual retrata y descose los dramas más vivos de los turistas hospedados en el White Lotus. En la primera temporada, este lujoso hotel está ubicado en Hawai, al cual llegan varios turistas ricos y en su mayoría blancos a vivir experiencias únicas y contrastante con el personal de atención del hotel.
El choque cultural y socioeconómico entre quienes laboran en el hotel y los turistas serán el desencadenante de fuertes dramas y dejará un fallecido, que no sabremos quién es hasta el final, sin embargo trataremos de encontrarlo. Murray Bartlett le dará vida a Armond, el gerente del hotel que será uno de los personajes focos de la serie. Por otro lado, tenemos a las familias hospedadas: los Mossbacher, familia Patton y Tanya McQuoid.
Les dejaré un cuadro para que fijen bien la cantidad de personajes en la serie, al menos los que yo disfruté en su mayoría.
"The strangest vacation of your life is about to begin", is the sentence with which I want to describe this series. It portrays and unravels the most vivid dramas of the tourists staying at the White Lotus. In the first season, this luxurious hotel is located in Hawaii, where several wealthy and mostly white tourists arrive to live unique and contrasting experiences with the hotel staff. The cultural and socioeconomic clash between those who work at the hotel and the tourists will be the trigger for strong dramas and will leave a deceased, who we will not know who he is until the end, but we will try to find him. Murray Bartlett will play Armond, the hotel manager who will be one of the main characters of the series. On the other hand, we have the guest families: the Mossbachers, the Patton family and Tanya McQuoid. I'll leave you with a chart so you can take a good look at the number of characters in the series, at least the ones I enjoyed the most.
OPENING
El opening de la serie nos indica un poco que las cosas se saldrán de control en el hotel. Es una de las cosas que te llaman la atención en un primer momento y buscarás pistas en los cuadros que se nos muestran. Realmente es un Arte interesante. La música es pegajosa, salvaje y con ritmos tropicales. Tiene un aire de misterio impreganado. Es algo que escuchas de antesala al disturbio. Y la sucesión de imágenes es sin duda un mensaje oculto. Vemos animales de diferentes categorías, flores, flores que se expanden como acuarela y ensombrecen el color.
The opening of the series tells us a little bit that things will get out of control in the hotel. It's one of the things that catches your attention at first and you'll look for clues in the paintings we're shown. It really is an interesting Art. The music is catchy, wild and with tropical beats. It has an air of pervading mystery. It's something you hear as a prelude to the riot. And the succession of images is undoubtedly a hidden message. We see animals of different categories, flowers, flowers that expand like watercolor and overshadow the color.

LO BUENO | THE GOOD
La serie tiene una dinámica bien especial. Lo primero que se nos muestra con imágenes y un pequeño discurso es que ha ocurrido una tragedia-un accidente-un crimen en el White Lotus, esa es la introducción que está en el presente. Y luego se nos presenta el pasado con todo lo que ocurrió entonces como buenos espectadores, vamos a armar el rompecabezas: ¿quién muere?
A medida que vamos conociendo a los personajes, evaluamos quién “tiene motivo” para cometer el crimen/accidente, realmente no sabemos qué sucedió. Así que seguimos el hilo de pistas.
The series has a very special dynamic. The first thing we are shown with images and a short speech is that there has been a tragedy-an accident-a crime in the White Lotus, that is the introduction that is in the present. And then we are introduced to the past with everything that happened then as good viewers, we are going to put the puzzle together: who dies?
As we get to know the characters, we evaluate who "has motive" to commit the crime/accident, we don't really know what happened. So we follow the thread of clues.
Otra razón por la que amé la serie es el enriquecimiento de humor negro, la sátira y sarcasmo en el desenvolvimiento de algunos personajes, simplemente me enganchó desde el momento uno. Se habla desde el privilegio y se tocan temas interesantes como la “cancelación”, “el patriarcado”, “feminismo”, “matrimonio”…etc.
De hecho, el contraste entre los personajes me hizo recordar muchísimo a la película Parásitos. Y me voló la cabeza la cantidad de actores reconocidos en el cast. Todo el elenco tiene una trayectoria amplia en drama que simplemente maximizó la credibilidad en la pantalla.
Another reason why I loved the series is the enrichment of black humor, satire and sarcasm in the development of some characters, it simply hooked me from moment one. It speaks from privilege and touches on interesting topics such as "cancellation", "the patriarchy", "feminism", "marriage"...etc.
In fact, the contrast between the characters reminded me a lot of the movie Parasites. And I was blown away by the number of recognized actors in the cast. The entire cast has an extensive background in drama which simply maximized the credibility on screen.
PERSONAJES| CHARACTERS
Comenzando por la actriz Connie Britton como Nicole Mossbacher, quizás sea uno de los personajes que no resalta tanto en el drama de la temporada, pero amé cada escena con ella por la fluidez de su discurso y su naturalidad para actuar tan bien, realmente la vi como la matriarca que personificó estando de vacaciones. Hay pequeños detalles que te hacen creer una ficción y con ella, lo creí totalmente.
Starting with actress Connie Britton as Nicole Mossbacher, maybe she is one of the characters that doesn't stand out so much in the drama of the season, but I loved every scene with her because of the fluidity of her speech and her naturalness to act so well, I really saw her as the matriarch she personified being on vacation. There are little details that make you believe a fiction and with her, I totally believed it.
Por otra parte, está Natasha Rothwell que interpreta a Belinda, la gerente del spa del White Lotus. Es la que más convive con Tanya McQuoid y será junto a ella que veremos su dramatización. Belinda es el personaje más creíble de todo White Lotus, una mujer afroamericana que trata de ganarse la vida ofreciendo la mejor atención en el spa. Su amabilidad puede ser su pase dorado al éxito o que la haga caer fuerte de la ensoñación. Belinda retrata a miles de personas que trabajan en el emporio hotelero, que intentan ganarse el pan de cada día y que la gente quiere desde el principio. Pero siempre hay un momento para hacer stop. Y no siempre podemos tener una sonrisa, hay cosas que te sobrepasan y no puedes fingir. Belinda se ganó mi cariño.
On the other hand, there is Natasha Rothwell who plays Belinda, the spa manager of the White Lotus. She is the one who lives with Tanya McQuoid the most and it will be together with her that we will see her dramatization. Belinda is the most believable character in all of White Lotus, an African-American woman trying to make a living by providing the best care at the spa. Her kindness may be her golden pass to success or cause her to fall hard from daydreaming. Belinda portrays thousands of people who work in the hotel emporium, who try to earn their daily bread and who people love from the start. But there is always a time to stop. And we can't always have a smile, there are things that overtake you and you can't pretend. Belinda won my affection.
Hablemos ahora de personajes despreciables: Shane Patton. Ja, ja, ja con él y Armond es que la sátira y el sarcasmo se dispara. Yo amé toda la dinámica entre ellos dos. Claramente no esperaba ese final, uno de los dos ganaría, sin duda alguna, aunque atiné a la empatía.
Shane Patton me caería mal desde el principio, es un hombre déspota que necesita, lean bien, NECESITA tener la razón como si de eso dependiera su valía como hombre. No queda conforme con la atención que recibe si cree que hay un mensaje detrás. Además, sabe que tiene poder y no lo esconde, sino que se escuda en él para obtener lo que quiere. El juego entre Shane y Armond es muy chévere hasta que deja de serlo.
Lo cierto es que yo morí de risa con toda su participación, es un actor que he visto poco en otros proyectos, y aun así su caracterización fue brutal. Toda su expresión, rabia, la entendía y al mismo tiempo no.
Let's talk about despicable characters: Shane Patton. Ha ha ha ha with him and Armond is that the satire and sarcasm is off the charts. I loved the whole dynamic between the two of them. Clearly I wasn't expecting that ending, one of the two would win, no doubt about it, though I tied for empathy.
I would dislike Shane Patton from the beginning, he's a despot of a man who needs, read that right, NEEDS to be right as if his worth as a man depends on it. He is not satisfied with the attention he gets if he thinks there is a message behind it. Furthermore, he knows he has power and he doesn't hide it, he hides behind it to get what he wants. The game between Shane and Armond is very cool until it stops being cool.
The truth is that I died laughing with all his participation, he is an actor that I have seen little in other projects, and yet his characterization was brutal. All his expression, rage, I understood it and at the same time I did not.
Paula es un personaje intrigante para mí. No está cómoda, nunca se le ve feliz, siempre se aísla y muestra cara de que todo lo importa un banano. He conocido personas como ella, y por más justificación y motivos, que tenga para su actitud resulta realmente molesto estar junto a ella.
¿Llegamos a conocerla? Sí, en efecto luego podemos empatizar un poco con su distancia. Pero es algo breve y egoísta. El desenlace con ella me resultó más bien “decepcionante”. Es como esas personas que cree ser más inteligentes que otros y se dan un batacazo. Triste. No me gustó para nada este personaje, no hay nada que pueda rescatar. De hecho, la ignoré durante toda la temporada, en algunos momentos tenía un brillo, pero es que esa póker face no la toleraba. La actriz lo hizo increíble, debo admitir. Simplemente fue un personaje tonto de la serie, sus razones para las acciones estaban muy desbalanceadas.
Paula is an intriguing character for me. She is not comfortable, she never seems happy, she always isolates herself and looks like she doesn't give a damn about anything. I have met people like her, and no matter how much justification and reasons she has for her attitude, it is really annoying to be around her. Do we get to know her? Yes, we can indeed empathize a bit with her distance. But it's brief and selfish. I found the denouement with her rather "disappointing". She's like those people who think they're smarter than others and then get a shock. Sad. I didn't like this character at all, there's nothing I can salvage. In fact, I ignored her during the whole season, in some moments she had a glow, but I just couldn't tolerate that poker face. The actress did amazing, I must admit. She was just a dumb character in the series, her reasons for actions were very unbalanced.
¡Ay, Tanya! Ja, ja, ja es uno de los personajes más cómicos y sufribles de toda la serie. Su expresión de dolor no cesa. Siempre está así aun y cuando muestra una sonrisa. Pero Tanya se las juega muy bien, sabe manipular a las personas y conseguir lo que quiere con esa ingenuidad que resulta un poco falsa. Tanya rompió mi corazoncito. Es una persona que “tira la piedra y esconde la mano”, triste, su vida es una tragicomedia.
Oh, Tanya! Ha, ha, ha, ha is one of the most comical and sufferable characters in the whole series. Her pained expression never ceases. She is always like that even when she shows a smile. But Tanya plays it very well, she knows how to manipulate people and get what she wants with that naivety that is a bit fake. Tanya broke my little heart. She is a person who "throws a stone and hides her hand", sad, his life is a tragicomedy.
Como yo esperaba esa jocosidad que vi en el primer capítulo, sin duda alguna pensé que toda la serie sería graciosa. Entonces el ritmo de la serie va cambiando a la seriedad y algunos eventos que te parecen divertidas, dejan de serlo. Por eso este punto me llamó la atención desarrollarlo.White Lotus nos muestra una escenografía con personajes que no son lineales, sino que evolucionan constantemente de allí parte su dinamismo. Y resulta muy interesante la transformación del esquema principal.
As I was expecting that jocularity that I saw in the first chapter, I certainly thought that the whole series would be funny. Then the rhythm of the series changes to seriousness and some events that seem funny to you, stop being funny. White Lotus shows us a scenography with characters that are not linear, but constantly evolving, hence its dynamism. And the transformation of the main scheme is very interesting.
Creo que el ejemplo más claro y simple que daré, sin hacer spoiler, será la conversación entre: Nicole y Rachel. En esta conversación vemos a dos mujeres conversando amigablemente hasta que, ¡bum!, el tono de la conversación gira totalmente. Bueno así será la serie, y así son muchos de los personajes; Belinda, Tanya, Olivia, Paula… llega un punto en el cambian completamente el tono de lo que nos mostraron en un principio.
I think the clearest and simplest example I will give, without making spoilers, will be the conversation between: Nicole and Rachel. In this conversation we see two women chatting amicably until, boom, the tone of the conversation totally turns. Well that's how the series will be, and so are many of the characters; Belinda, Tanya, Olivia, Paula... there comes a point where they completely change the tone of what they showed us in the beginning.
Por esta razón amé la serie, más allá de las experiencias retratadas, la naturalidad de los personajes que no se muestran perfectos, sino que implosionan ante ti sin que lo esperes te acerca mucho más a ellos. Recomiendo mucho la serie, es muy buena y tiene para analizar mucho, sobretodo los discursos de algunos personajes como Mark Mossbacher.
For this reason I loved the series, beyond the experiences portrayed, the naturalness of the characters that are not shown to be perfect, but that implode before you without you expecting it, brings you much closer to them. I highly recommend the series, it is very good and has a lot to analyze, especially the speeches of some characters like Mark Mossbacher.
LO MALO | THE BAD
Ahora bien, entremos en zona de escozor, entre las cosas que me disgustaron de la serie están los llamados personajes rellenos. Hay unos cuantos que no entendí, quedaron muy flojos o el guión no les dio suficiente justificación para las acciones que hacían. Recordemos que el elenco está lleno de estrellas, entonces el equilibrio para desarrollar tantos personajes no fue fácil o no se logró, a mi parecer. Entre ellos está:
Now, let's get into the sting zone, among the things I disliked about the series are the so-called filler characters. There are a few that I didn't understand, they were too weak or the script didn't give them enough justification for the actions they did. Let's remember that the cast is full of stars, then the balance to develop so many characters was not easy or was not achieved, in my opinion. Among them are:
Olivia Mossbacher, tenía esperanzas de ver a Sydney hacer una dramatización interesante, más ligera que Euphoria, es cierto, pero interesante ya que la serie en los primeros capítulos era cínica, graciosa. Pero con Olivia no encontré nada de eso. Fue un personaje plano carente de chispa. Si alguien más vio la serie, me deja su comentario al respecto. Pero a lo que a mí respecta, Olivia no fue un buen personaje.
Seguimos con la familia Mossbacher y ahora hablaremos de Quinn, dios mío, este personaje adolescente tenía pinta de evolucionar y creo que el final nos dejó un final abierto con él para alcanzar trascender. Pero no fue lo que yo vi en pantalla. La metamorfosis quedó inconclusa porque me presentaron a un joven indiferente a la vida que en unas vacaciones, al parecer, entendió la sencillez de vivir. Y fue muy abrupto ese supuesto despertar que parece hasta inmaduro y caprichoso, voy a darles el mérito de que eso es lo que querían lograr con él. Pero para mí no fueron disfrutables esas escenas. No me comí el cuento.
Olivia Mossbacher, I had hopes to see Sydney do an interesting dramatization, lighter than Euphoria, true, but interesting as the series in the first chapters was cynical, funny. But with Olivia I found none of that. She was a flat character lacking spark. If anyone else saw the series, leave me your comment about it. But as far as I'm concerned, Olivia was not a good character.
We continue with the Mossbacher family and now we'll talk about Quinn, my god, this teenage character had the look of evolving and I think the finale left us an open ending with him to reach transcend. But that's not what I saw on screen. The metamorphosis was left unfinished because I was introduced to a young man indifferent to life who on a vacation, apparently, understood the simplicity of living. And it was very abrupt that supposed awakening that seems even immature and capricious, I will give them credit that this is what they wanted to achieve with him. But for me those scenes were not enjoyable. I didn't buy the story.
Y finalmente, entre las cosas que no me gustaron de la serie está el hecho de que no renovaron el elenco para la segunda temporada. Ja, ja, ja yo siempre hago lo mismo, me engancho con personajes que no volveré a ver. Lo cierto es que amé tanto la cantidad de personajes pintorescos como Armond, Tanya, Shane, Mark, Belinda, que esperaba verlos nuevamente. Aunque entiendo la razón de ser y finalmente logré disfrutarlo. Yo no suelo buscar nada de lo que voy a ver antes, me dicen que es buena y voy a ver, luego me estrello o no. Así que no me sabía la dinámica de la producción en cuanto a hacer una serie antológica en diferentes partes del mundo. Igual lo menciono aquí como lo malo porque así me pareció.
And finally, among the things I didn't like about the series is the fact that they didn't renew the cast for the second season. Ha, ha, ha, ha I always do the same thing, I get hooked on characters that I will never see again. The truth is that I loved so much the amount of colorful characters like Armond, Tanya, Shane, Mark, Belinda, that I was hoping to see them again. I understand the rationale though and finally managed to enjoy it. I don't usually look up anything I'm going to see beforehand, they tell me it's good and I go see it, then I either crash or I don't. So I didn't know the dynamics of the production in terms of making an anthology series in different parts of the world. I still mention it here as the bad thing because that's how it seemed to me.
En conclusión, yo disfruté mucho toda la serie. Y como puntaje les puedo dar un 9/10, hay más cosas que me disgustaron que las que le restaron, de hecho, es una serie que volvería a ver, así que un 9 es más que merecido. Quería hacer las dos reseñas juntas, pero se me hizo muy largo el asunto, sin embargo espero que hayan disfrutado mis apreciaciones y puedan ver la serie por ustedes mismos.
In conclusion, I really enjoyed the whole series. And as a score I can give you a 9/10, there are more things that I disliked than the things that subtracted from it, in fact, it is a series that I would watch again, so a 9 is more than deserved. I wanted to do the two reviews together, but it became too long, however I hope you enjoyed my appreciations and you can watch the series for yourselves.
Ufff es demasiado buena esta serie, yo quedé enamorada de ella, a pesar de que odié a prácticamente todos los personajes (menos a Belinda, ella es amor ❤️). Creo que los personajes que no resaltaron fue porque sencillamente eran secundarios, yo eso no lo vi tan mal.
Estoy a punto de terminar la segunda temporada y aunque me está gustando, creo que la primero es bastante superior.

Me encantó The White Lotus, la primera temporada me mantuvo en velo por esa dosis de comedia negra, drama y un tanto de misterio por ese asesinato con el que arrancó el asunto. Hubo escenas memorables jejeje, Tanya fue mi favorita al igual que Armond 🙈. La otra cara de unas lujosas vacaciones y algunas familias ricachonas 😅. Es cierto que algunos personajes no tuvieron tanta relevancia, pero tal vez fue necesario para armonizar la trama. Que bueno que la hayas visto, ahora debes pasarte por la segunda que también está muy buena 🙈.
Es una serie intrigante, me parece un poco peculiar y más por lo que estás demarcando, me pareció un poco intrigante el hecho de que se pareciera a Parásito, lo sátiro, puede ser un toque a lo dramático y maligno como puedo ver. Que Belinda actúe en ella me llama la atención, no tengo HBO. :*)
Una serie excelente. Para mi fue genial, hice la revire de la primera temporada hace como un año.
La razón pro la cual n se repite elenco la segunda temporada, es que esto al principio fue una mini serie. Debido al éxito de critica y publico, HBO le propuso a Mike White hacer otra temporada, además de darle un buen cheque y este acepto transformarla en una serie antología, donde cada temporada habrán nuevos personajes y nueva locación.
