"Bohemian Rhapsody": a delicate twin’s show with real vocal by Freddie Mercury

Review by @aydogdy · 2765d · of Bohemian Rhapsody

To understand if not everything, then something important about this film, it is not necessary to watch it: just a name is enough. "Bohemian Rhapsody" is a phrase that is understandable, first of all, to Queen fans, and this means that the picture was made primarily for fans. It is an offensive judgment, especially if you remember how many songs in Queen's baggage, the names of which would be perfect for a dramatic biopic about the rise and fall of a star, the fate of the unique singer and key figure of the 20th century pop culture of the Freddie Mercury. "Somebody to Love" (hint at the hero's difficult personal life) and "Who Wants to Live Forever" (reminder of his early death), "I Want It All" (his obsessive nature) and "I Want to Break Free" (well-known love of freedom), "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions" (after all, it's about the group, not just its leader). These are only the most banal options, you can list them endlessly.

However, the producers meticulously and without the slightest imagination took the name of the most ordinary - the genius who would argue! - a hit, as if denoting its chaste intentions: not to go into privacy, not to go into the details. About who, when and how he loved and hated Mercury, the viewer receives only the most general information. After the film, you involuntarily begin to google the details - you get so little information from the screen. Instead, they explain to you for some reason how difficult it was to break into the charts in 1975 with a six-minute song that included an operatic interlude - as if it had any significance today.

2.jpg

However, this is half the problem: you will never know anything about Freddie's permanent associates in the Queen, their characters, biographies, passions and dislikes. Of course, the actors Gwilym Lee (guitarist Brian May), Ben Hardy (drummer Roger Taylor) and Joseph Mazzello (bass player John Deacon) are very similar to their prototypes, but it seems that you are watching not a film, but a show of twins. In the clip themselves Queen "The Miracle" (another potential name for the picture) with the same task handled not like an example more creative.

It is known that the original plan - to take on the main role of the famous comedian Sacha Baron Cohen - failed because of the doubts of May and Taylor, directly involved in the project as co-producers. They were afraid that the picture would turn out to be too "adult" and would touch on painful topics, and Cohen’s background, as a person passing all the limits of decency in his own work, will negatively affect the audience’s perception of the film.

We can assume that at the moment when Cohen left the game, everything fell down. However, it’s certainly not the young serial artist Rami Malek who got out of the way to achieve a portrait resemblance to the singer and play a few touching scenes as emotionally as possible.

In an effort to not offend anyone and not hurt, to do more delicately with the legacy of Mercury and its fans in love, the producers of the film overdone. The final product came out neat so that it seems sterile. Not in it and significant traces of the author's presence. Certainly, credited by the director Bryan Singer is a man of extraordinary talent. One could dream of how his experience in the field of films about groups of unusual people (from "The Usual Suspects" to "X-Men") will help to show the Queen group as a team of super-talented mutants, but there is nothing like that on the screen. Without a clue, it is impossible to guess who the director was. And it's clear why: with Singer, the producers also spat out, and in the midst of filming, and "Bohemian Rhapsody" completed Dexter Fletcher (who put, in particular, the not bad sports picture "Eddie the Eagle"), and at some point in the director's chair, they say turned out to be even Brian May himself.

Alas, as the song that gave the name of the film teaches us, the chorus "Galileo Figaro" sings chic only in contrast with the solo vocal or guitar. Even in collective creativity one can rarely do without the main author, who would give direction to the work and try to say at least something in it, and not just tell it. It is embarrassing to watch a multi-million dollar Hollywood blockbuster about a rock band whose songs the whole world knows by heart.

The one thing in Bohemian Rhapsody is undoubtedly good - and this is the perfect factor in the success of the film: songs. They were not rehearsed or re-recorded, the sound is authentic Mercury vocals, guitar May, bass Deacon and Taylor drums. It reconciles a lot with what.

Full disclosure, I grew up with Queen and I am a life long fan. I think you sell the film short. I saw it with a group of 6 friends. We all found it to be an incredible work to bring Freddie back to life. It told the story in an entertaining way while surrounding us with incredible music. Not every film needs to "send a message." This one was a rocking good time. A chance to avoid day-to-day stress and escape into our collective past and just enjoy being alive. I have been a rock drummer in garage bands, off and on, for 30 years. This film allowed people to get a sense of the excitement of being on stage in a band. The film also did not shy away from dealing with a number of serious topics. Aids, monogamy, each person’s need for love and acceptance, art, and the courage to be different. I give this film an A.
