Freedom of the press and information is the basic need of a normal society, no less important than the need for security. That's what this movie is about.
People who faced serious problems with the government, with the President, with justice, with the law itself, still did their job and told the public the truth about the war. Were they scared? Certainly. They could lose their jobs, their authority, the paper could go bankrupt. In the end, they could be put in jail for divulging military secrets and completely ruin life for themselves and their families. However, journalists and the management of the newspaper all the same went for the publication of the got materials. Because that's exactly what they exist for.
Moreover, it was a difficult decision made society stronger. The work of independent media proved once again that society is responsible for everything that happens to it, and no one has the right to hide from it the truth — neither Ministers, nor prosecutors, nor the President, whatever military and political reasons they were not guided.
Because of the actions of journalists and public interest, the Vietnam War ended, American soldiers ceased to die in vain, and President Nixon eventually turned out to be the first President of the country who left his post ahead of schedule — for abuse of power. An independent court was another condition of this victory: if one branch of government is defeated, others correct the situation. However, if all branches are affected, society becomes unviable.
This story is about the United States of the 1970s, about a country that has long been on this difficult path, on which there can be no final victory-only a constant struggle. We still have our own way. But sooner or later, our society will have to take responsibility for what is happening, and then it will also need real, free media.
Until that time, such movies for many are boring and "nothing".
