Today I'm not covering the subject of electronic music - although the music we hear now can sound a little bit electronic.
I'm talking about one of the most famous works of contemporary classical composer Philip Glass, the soundtrack for the 1982 experimental film "Koyaanisqatsi". It is the first of a trilogy of films directed by Godfrey Reggio, followed by "Powaqqatsi" (1988) and " Naqoyqatsi" (2002), all of which have also soundtracks composed by Philip Glass. Almost 40 years old now, the film is more current for our world than ever. The word "Koyaanisqatsi", in the Hopi language meaning "unbalanced life", perfectly decribes the era we have entered .
I can honestly recommend viewing "Koyaanisqatsi" if you don't yet know it. Despite being a "artsy" film without texts or story, it's never boring. And I think part of it's fascination is the perfect match of the powerful pictures and the very special music by Philip Glass.
It's best to watch it as a whole, but here are some segments from the film, as examples:
Pruit Igoe
The Pulse
Ending
Until next time...
