New Gods: Nehza Reborn Review

Review by @belemo · 1870d · of New Gods: Nezha Reborn

I actually didn't have any expectations when I started the animation because it was just some random name I saw pop up on my Netflix. The algorithm figures that I'm an anime person, so they connected me with Chinese animation.

The animation is based on a confuckulated timeline in history where there are old-school cars and advanced technology coexisting. The story follows the life of Li, a smuggler, mechanic, and tech nerd being plunged into a world of gods and magic.

In this timeline, the villain is the leader of the De Clan and also a dragon king. His breeding of some pearl by draining the power of other water dragon led to water scarcity in the city.

The story follows that to drain their power, the dragons need to be in freshwater, so the powerful leader of the De clan used up all the water supply in the city. This led to water scarcity and lots of suffering.

The protagonist is one of many reincarnations of Nehza, a firey spirit that is notorious for causing trouble. The spirit enters into Li and gives him the ability to control fire at his will and do a bunch of other cool stuff that includes super strength, speed, and agility.

Generally speaking, I say it is a pretty good anime. The story leverages various Chinese traditional folklores and spins it into an interesting kick-ass anime. Unlike the traditional Japanese style of drawing, this one takes a more mainstream look, kinda like how Disney makes theirs.

Overall, I say it is worth the time and a watch, if you're into these sort of things. What can I say? I prefer seeing cliche action scenes and Hollywood "good guy always wins" crap in animations. It is much easier to digest than the alternative.
