Have you ever watched a movie that made you laugh at first, only for you to realize later that the story was actually touching something very real? That was my experience with Oversabi Aunty. What starts as comedy gradually becomes a story that makes you reflect on yourself and the people around you.
Toyin Abraham directed and starred in this Nigerian box-office movie as Toun, a church usher who has practically turned correcting other people's behaviour into a full-time responsibility. She is always quick to notice what is wrong with other people's children, relationships and choices, yet somehow fails to notice what is happening in her own home.
At home, Toun is married to Chidi, played by Mike Ezuruonye, and they have four children. While she is busy acting like the moral police in her community, her own children are quietly dealing with emotional neglect, confusion and problems that she doesn't properly recognize.
Things become even more interesting when her eldest daughter, Seyi, played by Efe Irele, begins preparing for her wedding introduction. What should have been a beautiful family celebration gradually turns into an event where several hidden family problems begin to surface.
That was the point where the title Oversabi Aunty started making more sense to me. Being “oversabi” isn't only about talking too much or interfering in other people's affairs. Sometimes, it can also mean focusing so much on other people's problems that you avoid dealing with your own.
One of the biggest ironies in Toun's story is that she seems to know everybody's business but doesn't really understand what is happening with her own children. Eventually, some of the same behaviours she criticizes in other people's children begin appearing in her own household.
Chuka, Toun's son, played by Enioluwa Adeoluwa, brings another important layer to the story. His anger and emotional struggles are connected to a child who has spent too much time feeling unseen and unheard. That part stayed with me because children don't always become what their parents teach them; sometimes, they become what their parents repeatedly show them.
As the wedding approaches, the situation becomes even more chaotic. The Yoruba and Igbo sides of the family, church expectations, parental rivalry and cultural differences all collide, creating moments that are both hilarious and uncomfortable.
Toyin Abraham's exaggerated performance works well for Toun's character. She is annoying, funny, frustrating and, at some point, surprisingly human. Mike Ezuruonye also adds balance to the chaos through his portrayal of Chidi.
Beyond all the comedy, however, the movie leaves us with a deeper question: What if the person who is always correcting everyone else is actually avoiding something within themselves?
Of course, Oversabi Aunty isn't perfect. Some scenes felt unnecessarily long, some dialogue became repetitive, and a few subplots, including the car-stop scene, could have been removed without affecting the main story.
Still, the movie manages to do something important. It makes us laugh at a familiar Nigerian character and then quietly encourages us to look inward.
For me, the biggest lesson from Oversabi Aunty is simple: before you start correcting everybody else's children, make sure you haven't stopped listening to your own.
Sometimes, we need to remove the booger in our own eye before pointing out the one in another person's.
