The movie battle on Buka street is a comic drama directed by a popular nollywood actress Funke Akindele and Tobi Makinde. It featured movie stars like Mercy who is Awele. Sola Sobowale,Bimbo ademoye and many others. The movie was first released in December 16, 2022.
The movie starts with family rivalry that has existed for so many years before they were born . Awele and Yejide are actually half sisters. There two uncooperative mothered are Ezinne and Asake who have been in conflict for marrying the same man..
They choose chaos instead of letting go of the past and somehow this rivalry starts manifesting in the lifes of their daughters. Yetunde and Awele happen to establish their business on the same street and the competition becomes more intense . Customers begin to spilt each other to fit into the two sisters Buka. As the sisters struggle to secure their territory.
The food business started with their mother's,so it wasn't just about food, it was a physical representation of the rivalry between the two families, there was a lot of sabotage from the both sisters . The mischief in the movie becomes intense.
The film is a typical Nigerian family story but in a more entertaining way. We see polygamy, jealousy, family, motherhood and rivalry. Battle on Buka street gives a colourful and comic setting. The food settings gives the movie a very strong Nigerian vibe . Like so many food vendor Markets it's always noisy with a lot food being prepared and sold.
The mixture of Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa with a little bit of pidgin English makes the movie more relatable to our environment, the competition through the cooking is really outstanding as the cooking makes the rivalry much relatable to the polygamous and competitive Nigerian life style.
This movie passes a deeper message underneath all the chaos , it shows how children can inherit unresolved conflicts from their parents.The way yetunde and Awele inherited the rivalry from their mother's and there own children inherited it from them
The different actors, Yejide is stubborn and ambitious like wise Awele giving off the confrontational personality the character needed for the movie . Their interactions is the movie added more to its comic settings. Sola Sobowale and Tina Mba their mother's play a major role in the movie as they are the only people who know exactly how the rivalry started. Nkem Owoh popularly known as Osofia who is known for his comedic presence in movies.
The reuniting of the family happen when Yejides husband escape from prison and her son rescues Aweles daughter. And the hideout of Yejides husband is being exposed by Awele who after understanding the situation at hand, she lies to the vigilant that she raised a false alarm. It clearly shows that no matter how we fight as family , blood is thicker than water.
Battle on Buka street is a very interesting movie that combines comedy , food , culture and family feuds and rivalry. It is more about unsettled family feuds than two women fighting for customers, it's a beautiful Nigerian movie to be enjoyed. It's a 10/10 for me.
