Hello, internet people! Everything ok? I'm elated with the results of the Johnny Deep vs Amber Heard trial (which I'll post about tomorrow), justice was finally served! To celebrate, I've decided to bring you the review of one of my favourite sagas, starring almost entirely Johnny Deep (before he was unfairly fired) and we're going to analyse as always, breaking down the film, every aspect of it.
¡Hola, gente de internet! ¿Todo bien? Yo estoy eufórica con los resultados en el juicio de Johnny Deep contra Amber Heard (tema del que haré un post mañana) ¡Al fin se hizo justicia! Para celebrarlo, he decidido traerles la review de una de mis sagas preferidas, protagonizada casi en su totalidad por Johnny Deep (antes de que lo despidieran injustamente) y vamos a analizar como siempre, desglosando la película y cada aspecto de ésta.
Let's start by talking about my favourite feature or aspect: the cinematography. This film has beautiful photography, with wide shots to better appreciate the scenery (almost entirely the sea and the Caribbean islands). While most of the film presents a warm palette of colours and filters, at the beginning of the film it is the opposite.
Empezaremos hablando de mi característica o aspecto preferido: La fotografía. Este film tiene una fotografía preciosa, con planos amplios para poder apreciar mejor los escenarios (casi en su totalidad, el mar y las islas del caribe). Si bien la mayoría de la película presenta una paleta de colores y filtros cálidos, al inicio de la película es todo lo contrario.
The introductory scene presents us with a ship sailing ghostly through the sea, surrounded by fog, while a little Elizabeth sings a pirate song. The wide, rising shot from the hull of the ship makes it look imposing and menacing, the filter and grey colour palette, plus the child's voice singing gives the scene a gloomy atmosphere, and in a secondary shot (much later) we are given a small glimpse of a mysterious and frightening ship that disappears shortly afterwards.
La escena introductoria nos presenta un barco que navega de forma fantasmal por el mar, rodeado de mucha niebla, mientras una pequeña Elizabeth canta una canción pirata. El plano amplio y ascendente desde el casco del barco hace que éste se vea imponente y amenazante, el filtro y paleta de colores grises, más la voz infantil cantando le da a la escena una ambientación y atmósfera tétrica, y es que en un plano secundario (bastante más adelante) se nos da un pequeño vistazo de un barco misterioso y atemorizante que desaparece poco después.
The story is fascinating from the start and what I like most is that the film is a mix of history and fantasy, and although it has some plot holes or missing plot points, the history of the film itself is not bad either. For example, Port Royal actually existed in the Caribbean, and was the most influential port city in the area, but although the film is set in approximately 1700, the real Port Royal was destroyed by an earthquake and several subsequent Tsunamis, and much of the island sank on 7 June 1962.
La historia es fascinante desde un inicio y lo que más me gusta es que el film es una mezcla de historia y fantasía, y aunque tiene algunos huecos argumentales o que faltan a la historia, la historia del propio film tampoco está mal. Por ejemplo, Port Royal existió verdaderamente en el caribe, y era la ciudad portuaria más influyente de la zona, pero aunque la película se ambienta aproximadamente en 1700, el Port Royal real fue destruida por un terremoto y varios Tsunami posteriores, y la gran parte de la isla se hundió el 7 de junio de 1962.
Characters are crucial in this genre of film as the narrative is explained purely through them, and it is through them that character development and their well-constituted personalities give context to the films. I think the most developed characters are Elizabeth and Will, as opposed to Jack, who... is always Jack. The characterisations are great and the performances are perfect.
Los personajes son cruciales en este género de películas ya que la narrativa se explica netamente a través de ellos, y es así como el desarrollo de personajes y sus personalidades bien constituidas le dan contexto a las películas. Creo que quienes tienen mayor desarrollo sin dudas son Elizabeth y Will, contrario a Jack que... pues siempre es Jack. Las caracterizaciones están geniales y las actuaciones perfectas.

Now we will talk about the protagonist and the villain of this film because both are endearing. On the one hand we have Captain Hector Barbossa, a cruel, mocking, disloyal and treacherous man, who always seeks his own profit and carries on his shoulders the weight of a terrible curse that punishes him and his crew for their greed. Geoffrey Rush does a splendid job of stepping into the shoes of this amoral character. Details such as the way he watches when other people are eating (with restrained desire because he cannot enjoy it) or how his will is broken by Elizabeth's threats to throw the coin into the sea, are touches that make Barbossa an interesting character.
Ahora hablaremos del protagonista y el villano de esta cinta porque ambos son entrañables. Por un lado tenemos al Capitán Héctor Barbossa, un hombre cruel, burlón, desleal y traicionero, el cuál siempre busca el beneficio propio y carga sobre sus hombros el peso de una terrible maldición que lo castiga a él y a su tripulación por su avaricia. Geoffrey Rush hace un espléndido trabajo poniéndose en los zapatos de este amoral personaje. Detalles como la forma de mirar cuando otras personas comen (con deseo contenido debido a que él no puede disfrutar de eso) o de como su voluntad se quiebra con las amenazas de Elizabeth de arrojar la moneda al mar, son toques que hacen de Barbossa un personaje interesante.
Jack Sparrow on the other hand is quite a complex character, even if he doesn't seem so at first glance. Jack's introduction in the film sums up his personality. Let's appreciate it:
Jack Sparrow por otro lado es un personaje bastante complejo aunque no lo parezca a simple vista. La introducción de Jack en el film nos resume su personalidad. Apreciémosla:
Jack is a pirate who, like everyone else, thinks of himself first and only makes deals that benefit him in some way. He also tends to change plans on the fly to his own advantage thanks to his cunning and changes sides at will, all depending on what suits him at the time, Despite seeming selfish and superficial, Jack knows what betrayal feels like, so he tries not to make the same mistake with his new companions, showing himself faithful and loyal to them. And although he doesn't want to show it, he also has high morals (as far as a pirate is concerned) and nobility. His first appearance shows his greatness and his clumsiness in equal measure, as Jack is known for getting out of dangerous or embarrassing situations with great wit, cunning and attitude.
Jack es un pirata que como todos, piensa en sí mismo en primer lugar y solo hace tratos en los que se beneficie de alguna manera, además, suele cambiar los planes sobre la marcha totalmente a su favor gracias a su astucia, y cambia de bando a voluntad todo en función a lo que le convenga en el momento, es así como es impredecible y no sabemos al inicio como espectadores si Jack es "de los buenos o los malos" Pese a parecer una persona egoísta y superficial, Jack sabe lo que se siente la traición, así que intenta no caer en el mismo error con sus nuevos compañeros, mostrándose fiel y leal a estos. Y aunque no quiere demostrarlo, también tiene una alta moralidad (dentro de lo que cabe para un pirata) y nobleza. Su primera aparición nos muestra por igual su grandiosidad y su torpeza, ya que Jack es reconocido por salir de situaciones peligrosas o embarazosas con gran ingenio, astucia y actitud.
And finally the soundtrack, and special effects. I won't dwell on those two aspects because they are the best of the film and left me speechless.
Y finalmente la banda sonora, y efectos especiales. No me extenderá en esos dos aspectos porque son los mejores de la película y directamente me dejaron sin palabras.
