Hello, internet people! Just a moment ago I saw the film Voldemort: Origins of the Heir, and I think it's horrible (you might have guessed it from the title of this post), however, I'll explain why during this post.
¡Hola, gente de internet! Justo hace un momento vi la película Voldemort: orígenes del heredero y me resultó horrible (ya lo habrán imaginado por el título de este post), sin embargo, ya explicaré el porqué durante el mismo.
The film is extra official and is of Italian origin, directed by Gianmaria Pezzato with a budget of 15,000 euros. Although the title suggests that the story itself will be about Voldemort, we get off to a very bad start as 90% of the film stars a made-up character who talks about Voldemort. The story is set around the time of the 1950s in the Soviet Union.
La película es extra oficial y es de origen italiano, dirigida por Gianmaria Pezzato con un presupuesto de 15.000 euros. Aunque el título nos augura que la historia tratará en sí misma de Voldemort, empezamos muy mal ya que el 90% de la película lo estelariza un personaje inventado que habla sobre Voldemort. La historia se sitúa aproximadamente durante la época de los años 50 en la Unión Soviética.
I'll start by talking about the positives of the film as the negatives are a long list. I loved the locations and the cinematography of the film, it has several shot elements that I like such as blur, aerial shots, symmetry, rotating shots (which add dynamism) as well as characterisation and special effects, the performances were not bad but not great either. Apart from that... the film is awful.
Empezaré hablando de lo positivo de la película ya que lo negativo es una larga lista. Amé las locaciones y la fotografía de la película, tiene varios elementos de planos que me gustan como el desenfoque, planos aéreos, simetría, planos rotativos (los cuales aportan dinamismo) además de la caracterización y los efectos especiales, las actuaciones no estuvieron mal pero tampoco son cosa del otro mundo. Quitando eso... la película es horrible.
They completely butchered the original story, and in the whole film the only Cannon character is Tom Ryddle. In this story Tom was the "friend" of three other kids (two boys and a girl) who were also heirs of their houses, Revenclaw, Hyfflepuff and Gryffindor respectively but gradually, after the graduation of Tom and the Ravenclaw boy (who were the eldest), they lost contact with Ryddle. The girl (Grisha McLaggen, the character's name), who was apparently in love with Tom, begins to investigate his whereabouts, and thus uncovers the Slytherin's worst secrets.
Destrozaron la historia original por completo, y en toda la película el único personaje Cannon es Tom Riddle. En esta historia Tom era "amigo" de otros tres chicos (dos chicos y una chica) los cuales también eran herederos de sus casas, Revenclaw, Hyfflepuff y Gryffindor respectivamente, pero poco a poco, después de la graduación de Tom y el chico de Ravenclaw (que eran los mayores), perdieron contacto con Riddle. Palabras más palabras menos, la chica (Grisha McLaggen, se llama el personaje) quien al parecer estaba enamorada de Tom, empieza a investigar su paradero y es así como va descubriendo los peores secretos del Slytherin.
The introductory scene lasts more than 5 minutes in which we only see a fight (with very good special effects) between the Gryffindor girl (who after graduating became an Auror) and some other wizards that we have no idea who they are, after half a minute the sequence gets boring and when it finally ends, they catch the girl and then comes one of the strangest and most inconsistent parts: They inject her with Veritaserum.
La escena introductoria dura más de 5 minutos en los cuáles solo vemos una pelea (con muy buenos efectos especiales) entre la muchacha de Gryffindor (que después de graduada se hizo Auror) y entre otros magos que no tenemos idea de quienes son, después de medio minuto ya la secuencia aburre tremendamente, y cuando finalmente se termina, atrapan a la chica y viene una de las partes más extrañas e inconsistentes: Le inyectan Veritaserum.
To understand why it is an aberration, I will explain how magic potions work briefly: Magic potions and infusions are made from water (ordinary) as a base and with magic ingredients (the corresponding ones for each potion), the temperature of each section of the preparation must be taken into account as well as the wand movements to stir a specific amount of times in a specific direction. The most important thing about them is that their dosage is always only and exclusively by ingestion, it cannot be administered in any other way, much less injected, since the use of syringes and scalpels is only for muggles, in fact, wizards think that cutting the skin or pricking it is barbaric, so that scene is unrealistic and quite unnecessary. I imagine they wanted to portray the Soviet Union's use of experiments in some way, but those were Muggle practices.
Para entender porqué es una aberración, explicaré el funcionamiento de las pociones mágicas de forma breve: Las pociones e infusiones mágicas son hechas a partir de agua (común y corriente) como base y con ingredientes mágicos (los correspondientes para cada poción), se debe tener en cuenta la temperatura de cada sección de la preparación además de los movimientos de varita para revolver una cantidad de veces en específico en un sentido específico. Lo más importante de ellas es que su posología siempre es única y exclusivamente por ingesta, no se puede administrar de otra forma y mucho menos inyectada ya que el uso de jeringas y escalpelos es únicamente de los muggles, de hecho, los magos piensan que cortar la piel o pincharla es una barbarie, así que esa escena es poco realista y bastante innecesaria. Imagino que querían retratar de alguna forma el recurso de experimentos de la unión soviética, pero esas eran prácticas muggles.
The story is inconsistent and monotonous, we are supposed to come to see Voldemort not a girl telling his story in a boring way, which generates drowsiness. Of the entire film we see Tom Ryddle in 5 scenes in a film that lasts almost an hour and the longest scene lasts approximately 6 minutes.
La historia es poco consistente y monótona, se supone que dado al título venimos a ver a Voldemort no a una chica contando su historia de forma aburrida, con la cuál genera somnolencia. De la totalidad de la película vemos a Tom Riddle en 5 escenas en una peli que dura casi una hora, y la escena más larga dura aproximadamente 6 minutos.
Now we talk about the supposed protagonist: Tom Ryddle. The characterisation was awesome, the boy looked quite similar except for the blue eyes, we know that even J.K doesn't know what colour Riddle's eyes are, as in one book it says they are bright green similar to Harry's and in another it says he has dark eyes (but at least we know they are not blue hahaha). However in his performance is when it caused me to throw the computer out the window because watching him was putting chlorine in my eyes.
Ahora hablamos del supuesto protagonista: Tom Riddle. La caracterización estuvo brutal, el muchacho se parecía bastante a excepción de los ojos azules, sabemos que ni J.K sabe de que color son los ojos de Riddle ya que en un libro dice que son verdes brillantes parecidos a los de Harry, y en otro dice que tiene ojos oscuros (pero al menos sabemos que no son azules jajaja). Sin embargo en su actuación es cuando me provocó lanzar la computadora por la ventana porque verlo fue poner cloro en mis ojos.
I'm not saying the guy is a bad actor (he probably plays any other character well) but not Tom Ryddle, he didn't understand the character, you can tell he didn't do the typical psychological analysis of his character before playing him, it's as if he just learnt the script and Tom's reactions and actions on stage and that's it. Tom Ryddle is my favourite character because of his depth, he has a development, a motive, a foundation and also his personality is unique.
No digo que el muchacho sea mal actor (probablemente haciendo a cualquier otro personaje lo haga bien) pero no con Tom Riddle, no entendió al personaje, se nota que no hizo el típico análisis psicológico de su personaje antes de interpretarlo, es como si solo se aprendió el guion y las reacciones y acciones en el escenario de Tom y ya está. Tom Riddle es mi personaje preferido por su profundidad, tiene un desarrollo, un motivo, un fundamento y además, su personalidad es única.
Being my favourite character, it was more than clear that I would be super picky about this film and especially about the performance of the actor who would play him. According to the original story, Tom Riddle is a boy who grew up in deprivation and is impulsive, domineering and sinister, taking what he wants by force. However, once he meets Dumbledore and realises that being at Hogwarts and under the Headmaster's watch he will not be able to do the same, he chooses to use his intelligence and above all cunning: Tom starts a new life, being kind, sociable, very gentlemanly and flattering, always ready to help, i.e. he eclipsed his true personality in order to win the favour of others.
Siendo mi personaje preferido, estaba más que claro que sería super exigente con esta película y sobre todo con la actuación del actor quien lo interpretaría. Según la historia original, Tom Riddle es un niño que creció en las carencias y que es impulsivo, dominante y siniestro, tomando por la fuerza lo que quiere. Sin embargo, una vez que conoce a Dumbledore y se da cuenta de que estando en Hogwarts y bajo la vigilancia del director no podrá hacer lo mismo, opta por poner en práctica su inteligencia y sobre todo astucia: Tom empieza una nueva vida, siendo amable, sociable, muy caballero y adulador, siempre dispuesto a ayudar, es decir, eclipsó su verdadera personalidad para poder ganarse el favor de los demás.
By subtly flattering the right people, Tom became popular and received favours from students and teachers alike, and he was a brilliant student because he was thirsty for learning, the more he learned about magic the more powerful he would become. That kind, flirtatious and flattering attitude helped him to win the love of the elderly Hepzibah Smith, which he used to achieve his goals (selling or buying objects from her, as he was a salesman in his job) and also gained the trust of the woman who ended up revealing to him that she had two of the relics of the founders of Hogwarts that he was looking for, sentencing herself to death at the hands of the boy who planned the murder in detail to get off scot-free.
Lisonjeando sutilmente a la gente correcta, Tom se hizo popular y recibía favores de alumnos y profesores por igual, además era alumno modelo académicamente hablando ya que estaba sediento de aprendizaje, mientras más aprendiera sobre magia más poderoso se volvería. Esa actitud amable, coqueta y lisonjera le ayudó a obtener el amor de la anciana Hepzibah Smith, cosa que aprovechaba para lograr sus cometidos (venderle o comprarle objetos, ya que era vendedor en su trabajo) y además se ganó la confianza de la mujer quien terminó revelándole que tenía dos de las reliquias de los fundadores de Hogwarts que el tanto buscaba, sentenciándose a sí misma a una muerte a manos del muchacho que planeó el asesinato con detalle para salir exonerado.
It wasn't until he revealed himself as Lord Voldemort and recruited his old school gang and called them "Death Eaters" that he didn't bring out his true personality, so we can see that the portrayal of the boy in this film is quite misguided. How could anyone trust another person who at all times looks menacing and about to go for the jugular? Here are several examples of different moments in which the boy has the same sinister expression even though the scene doesn't warrant it at all:
No fue hasta que se reveló como Lord Voldemort y reclutó a su antigua pandilla escolar y los llamó "Mortífagos", que no sacó a relucir su verdadera personalidad, así podemos ver que la representación del chico de esta película es bastante desacertada. ¿Cómo alguien podría confiar en otra persona que en todo momento se ve amenazante y a punto de saltarle a la yugular? Aquí varios ejemplos de diferentes momentos en los cuales el chico tiene la misma expresión siniestra aunque la escena no lo ameritara en lo absoluto:
he's the Kristen Stewart of this film. She looks worse when compared to Frank Dillane's performance of the same character in the original films. Despite appearing in two slightly different scenes, only two scenes, where the longest lasts 3: 16 and in those few minutes Frank Dillane is able to be the master of deception that is Tom Ryddle, he carries himself pleasant and flattering, even smiling slightly to arouse confidence and although his body language dictates something, his dialogue says otherwise, however, thanks to his affable attitude, he manages to get his teacher to blurt out what he wants to know, despite the teacher like us (the viewers) being a little perturbed and confused because he has sympathy for the adorable boy, but is uncomfortable with the questions he asks, and finally when his teacher asks him if all his questions and statements are hypothetical, Tom answers in the affirmative with an affable smile, yet his eyes denote coldness, and a kind of amusement at his teacher's reactions, For the boy in his intelligence knew that by saying this he would make his true intentions clear to the professor without saying it openly and furthermore, he would ensure that the professor would not accuse him as he would be compromising himself by explaining the workings of a highly obscure and forbidden magic to a 16 year old student. The performance is superb because not only does it match the original personality of the character in the book, but although his expressions and body language convey one thing, part of him also conveys the opposite, something very difficult to achieve. Judge for yourselves.
Es como el Kristen Stewart de esta película. Se ve peor cuando comparamos la actuación del mismo personaje hecha por Frank Dillane en las películas originales. Pese a aparecer en dos escenas ligeramente diferentes, solo dos escenas, donde la más larga dura 3:16 y en esos escasos minutos Frank Dillane es capaz de ser el maestro del engaño que es Tom Riddle, se porta agradable y adulador, incluso sonriendo ligeramente para despertar confianza y aunque su expresión corporal dictamina algo, su diálogo dice otra cosa, sin embargo, gracias a su actitud afable, logra conseguir que su profesor suelte prenda sobre lo que quiere saber, pese a que el profesor como nosotros (los espectadores) está un poco perturbado y confundido porque tiene simpatía por el adorable muchacho, pero le incomoda las preguntas que hace, y finalmente cuando su profesor le pregunta si todas las interrogantes y planteamientos de él son hipotéticos, Tom responde afirmativamente con una sonrisa afable, sin embargo sus ojos denotas frialdad, y una especie de diversión por las reacciones de su profesor, más cuando suelta un "será nuestro secreto" Ya que el muchacho en su inteligencia sabía que diciendo esto le dejaría claro al profesor sus verdaderas intenciones sin decirlo abiertamente y además, se aseguraría que el profesor no lo acusara ya que se comprometería así mismo por explicarle el funcionamiento de una magia altamente oscura y prohibida a un alumno de 16 años. La actuación es excelsa porque no solo coincide con la personalidad original del personaje del libro, sino que aunque sus expresiones y lenguaje corporal transmite una cosa, parte de él también transmite lo contrario, algo muy difícil de lograr. Juzguen ustedes mismos.
The truth is that I was quite disappointed with this film as I was expecting more, as the other fan adaptations I have seen are quite decent. The ending of the film is so incoherent as to ingratiate the fans, despite the fact that "the girl" already has the diary and can make up any excuse regarding the question she is asked and leave quietly without embarrassing herself, but she prefers to reveal herself as Lord Voldemort.
La verdad es que me decepcionó bastante esta peli ya que esperaba más, debido a que las demás adaptaciones de fans que he visto son bastante decentes. El final de la película es tan incoherente como para congraciar a los fans, y es que pese a que "la chica" ya tiene el diario y puede inventar cualquier excusa con respecto a la pregunta que le hacen e irse tranquilamente sin ponerse en evidencia, pero prefiere revelarse como Lord Voldemort.
And the other inconsistency the size of a house is that Voldemort revealed all his most precious secrets such as the creation of his horcruxes and also technically what some of them were, when by his great intelligence and cunning we know that absolutely nobody (not even his most loyal followers and right-hand men like Bellatrix or "Severus") knew of their existence precisely to protect himself, so it would be idiotic to tell Soviet Aurors.
Y la otra inconsistencia del tamaño de una casa es que Voldemort reveló todos sus más preciados secretos como la creación de sus horrocruxes, y además técnicamente también cuales eran algunos, cuando por su gran inteligencia y astucia sabemos que absolutamente nadie (ni siquiera sus más fieles seguidores y manos derecha como Bellatrix o "Severus") sabía de la existencia de estos precisamente para protegerse, así que sería una idiotez contárselo a Aurores soviéticos.
