#REVIEW: ZEROVILLE | OPINIÓN | CRÍTICA | [ENG-ESP] 🎬

Review by @bigcarrillo · 1925d · of Zeroville

🎬 THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PLAYING (Tommy Wiseau) IN "The Disaster Artist" AND WANTING TO TURN "ZEROVILLE" INTO A CULT FILM.

For years I have followed the films of the controversial and charismatic (James Flanco) who in my humble opinion is one of those actors that can only be seen in one genre of films in which he does very well as is the comedy and to see him outside of that genre is sometimes a little difficult to digest.

🇪🇸 EXISTE UNA GRAN DIFERENCIA ENTRE INTERPRETAR A (Tommy Wiseau) EN “The Disaster Artist” Y QUERER CONVERTIR A “ZEROVILLE” EN UNA PELÍCULA DE CULTO.

THE COVER WAS EDITED BY ME WITH IMAGES FROM THE FILM "ZEROVILLE" AND IMAGES OF MY OWNERSHIP

Movies like Pineapple Express and Why Him? are without a doubt my favorite, since they have a positive impact on me, the comedy is messy and unconventional in the best style of a Dudeist without complications of any kind, a film to enjoy from beginning to end.

This is not to say that he doesn't have more serious films that show another side of the actor, such as 127 Hours, Spring Breakers and True Story, which I have had the opportunity to see. Here we can notice that he tries to show another facet and perhaps for him his interpretation is accurate, but for most moviegoers and viewers, including myself, we see that he fails to separate that image of rebellious and joker boy and we feel how that essence is still noble in his other films which has not had the success that many and especially (James Flanco) expected to have.

A few days ago I took a look at the movie ZeroVille of which I had no knowledge whatsoever and even less that it was a movie based on the 2007 novel of the same name by (Steve Erickson). I had to do some research on this gentleman in order to understand the movie which in itself is a brutal mess from minute 35 onwards. It is directed and starred by (James Franco) who has worked in other films like The Disaster Artist where he does a great job because he knows how to transmit to some extent what the original film in 2003 called The Room was a disaster, but the kind of film that is not to everyone's liking, but one of those films that have their own personality and can be liked if you get to understand it, the style of (James Flanco) is somewhat overshadowed by his roles and the way he tries to develop his films going through a myriad of methods that do not cause enough impact on the common viewer and tends to reach more people with tastes a little weird so to speak.

I am not a specialized critic nor much less a cinephile that will tell you the good and bad of the seventh art just a viewer like you who enjoys watching movies and leave his opinion, criticism and views on any film.

Let's get down to business!

🎬 WHAT'S THE MOVIE ABOUT?

I'LL TELL YOU QUICKLY AND WITHOUT SPOILERS, IN CASE YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT YET!

We will meet a man named Vikar (James Franco) who has a deep love for everything that has to do with film and the art that surrounds him a full time dreamer who will travel to the complicated and exotic world of Hollywood where he hopes to fulfill his dreams of being a successful filmmaker. His first steps in this community begins when he meets an editor named Dotty (Jacki Weaver as) who shows him the right way to edit and introduces him to the magical world of editing where everything at first is a mess, but thanks to what the editors do behind closed doors becomes a work of art.

On his adventure he meets Viking Man (Seth Rogen) a crazy character who understands perfectly where he stands and what the audience wants to see no matter how real or unbelievable it may be because from his point of view people only want to be entertained not understand how deep a movie can be. This same man takes him to a party where he meets Soledad Paladin (Megan Fox) an actress as recognized that hides a bipolar personality and lives tied to what Rondell (Will Ferrell) can achieve to make her shine when he wants, but despite that he falls in love with her and lives a not normal adventure where he becomes obsessed with her and makes her his focus of attention.

Vikar must swim against the current in a world where everything is momentary and anyone can take the place of the other. We will see how she tries to lead with all this while living a second reality where her art is inspired in a way by a period film called A Place in the Sun which is present in every scene and references the whole plot of the story they don't present.

It is one of those movies with a heavy rhythm and if you are not very familiar with everything that a real Cinéfilo knows you may feel a little overwhelmed by not understanding certain issues that very subtly touch in the film I in particular I stumbled several times and I struggled to keep up with the pace only in those details with the rest of the film I have a different opinion and here I tell you what I thought.

🎬 MY SPOILER FREE OPINION

When I saw this movie it was clear that I would not find a masterpiece that would blow my mind and although at the beginning everything looked very good I had the feeling that in one way or another it would go to hell and that's how it happened, a movie that presents you with an interesting character that they try to develop within a story that for thousands of viewers can be interesting and much more for true lovers of the seventh art.

Which turns out to be a disaster when we see that everything starts to get complicated with respect to plot structure and that nothing follows an order where we can understand what happens, I fully understand that the time in the movies is almost always not enough due to the budget, etc., but here they take a rushed pace with some scenes that need to be explained or at least see that process where a character advances from one point to another, that when not shown creates a void that is noticed and ruins the continuity of the story, added to that we can see how the story raises an idea at the beginning, but at the end show something totally different and you can see the intention to do something very big but without any effect.

Believe me that to make a written review of this movie is very difficult, since there is not enough material to make it more complete and that from my point of view makes it difficult the way I want to raise each point without throwing a lot of spoilers that ruin the movie that in itself is already a disaster.

GREATNESS AND FAILURE, This will sound repetitive, but it is one of the biggest problems he (James Flanco) has as a director and he wants to emulate other directors and create that environment where he tries to make his films something out of the ordinary or create around him an atmosphere that turns it into something of cult that he will never achieve until he understands that everything has an order and that to capture the attention of the viewer you must know how to swim in the right direction. His films where comedy and out of place jokes are the protagonists are great and it is a genre that goes hand in hand with what he wants to express and with which the follower of years ago feels comfortable when watching it.

Maybe the idea of doing something deeper is what mows it down and being honest and without any reason to attack the work of "James Flank" and much less make you think you, my friend reader, that I am an expert and the best movie critic. I feel that he lacks more commitment and something that I did notice in the movie The Disaster Artist is that to a certain extent he respected what was organic in it and did not pretend to do something more exaggerated that would have buried the essence of the original movie.

THE SAME AS ALWAYS, it is rare not to see the group of friends formed by (Danny McBride), (Seth Rogen), (Jonah Hill) and the very same (James Flanco) in any of his movies, but this time I must say that this group of friends was not completely involved in the film and I was surprised to see (Will Ferrell) in the plot and I have not seen him in another movie, but it is very rare to see them share the same universe.

DO I RECOMMEND IT?, if you have come this far it is more than obvious that I do not recommend it, but if you are a more experienced moviegoer maybe you will like this film that undoubtedly aims at a knowledgeable audience so to define it, although the professional critics ate this film alive maybe you will like it, remember that every head is a world and between tastes and colors have not written the authors or something like that.

🎬 THE GOOD AND THE BAD

THE BAD

  • Disorder of ideas, which generates a failure in its narrative and consequently the separation of the plot with the characters.

  • Acting that is not at all revealing or that makes you love the characters.

THE GOOD THINGS

  • An interesting story (The main idea is the story of a movie lover and his obsession with a beautiful woman looked interesting, but it was not executed as it should have been).

  • The first 15 minutes are the best.

🎬 MY RATING 5.5/10
