So for my movie director for this week is R. Balakrishnan. He is a director and also a screen writer whose work includes Cheeni Kum(2007), Paa(2009), Shamitabh(2015), Ki & Ka(2018). Am however going to be doing a review of his latest movie Padman. R. Balki as he is popularly known made a very bold move in this movie as it revolves around a sensitive issue relating to women.
Padman is a 2018 drama mixed with a bit of comedy directed and written by R. Balki. With a run time of 2hrs 20mins it starred amazing actors like Akshay Kumar, Radhika Apte, Sonam Kapoor, Urmila Mahanta amongst others. The movie is inspired by the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham a social worker who brought about the use of sanitary pad at low prices.
Synopsis Padman is a story of a man whose love for his wife drives him to do anything that would make her comfortable but for his wife as a woman not everything can be solved.
The movie opens up to the marriage ceremony of Lakshimi and Gayatri and follows through to their everyday love life. Lakshimi a sweet and devoted husband who would do anything to make things easy and comfortable for his wife. Like a time when Lakshmi and his wife was to go out and she sat on his bicycle, seeing how uncomfortable she was while he rode the bicycle he then added a wooden seat for her later on to enable her sit comfortably, which was followed by many other instances.
The interesting parts of this movie started when Lakshmi discovered the manner and way his wife observed her menstrual cycle using a dirty piece of cloth. This discovery however gave birth to Lakshmi quest to make a better option for his wife. In order to do this he got a sanitary pad for his wife which she refused to use because it was very expensive, he actually got it for 55ruppes. Being the problem solver that he was, he then decided to make one for her. His first attempt however failed as it was tested by his wife but he did not stop there he continued trying. Gayatri became tired of his persistent nature of her trying a handmade pad that would not work. she became frustrated refused to be his test subject and this pushed him out in search for someone to assist as his test subject, just to help him confirm if it is okay for use.
The movie takes us through the journey of Lakshmi's search for making a good and credible pad which would be beneficial not to only his wife and sisters but to his entire village. But due to the sensitivity of the topic of mensuration and how it is been taken especially in remote villages like theirs, his good intentions caused him more criticism than praises. Despite being insulted and critized by his family and the villagers who took him for a pervert, with his determination and support from Pari, he was able to come up with an invention of making a sanitary pad machine that would enable him make pads that could be affordable by everyone.
R. Balki through this movie attempts to give credit to the real hero Arunachalam Muruganantham who did all he could to spread personal hygiene in a manner that would be beneficial to women and at low cost. Featuring an extra ordinary true life story, he tried to pass a strong message of personal hygiene in relating to women especially those in remote areas. Credit to R.Balki who did a good job in this movie which has no boring moment, his choice of cast was good too,I mean Akshay Kumar has always been more like an advocate for such movies like when he starred in Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. His performance in here was great, setting another milestone for himself. Credit also goes to Amitabh Bachchan whose cameo scene carried a major message to be heard.
Padman is an inspiring movie with a message of social awareness and another which is determination because at a point I asked myself a question, what if Lakshmi had given up due to the criticism and insults he got? Well then, I guess he would not have gotten the breakthrough in making pads available for use in his village and other surrounding villages which in turn gained him so much respect.
The movie is entertaining and interesting to watch coupled with a strong message you do not want to miss. So if you looking to see a Bollywood film, Padman would not be a bad choice. But like I would always say there is nothing like the movie is perfect, we all have our various opinions and there is always room for improvement.
