Growing up in Africa, myths and legends are something we hear every day. Passionate stories of how the tortoise known to be one of the slowest animals defeated the hare known for its unmatchable speed, in a race. And although questions were asked, it still came down to the answer that, the tortoise is a very smart animal capable of defeating animals a hundred times stronger than him, faster than him, and even taller than him. But the question remains, is the tortoise truly that clever?? I guess like many other myths and legends we will never know.
Even stories of how monsters live under our beds waiting to make their move on us, or how vampire exists but only show up at night, and also how werewolves exist but can only be killed by a silver bullet, or even the more relatable story of a fat man with white hair and beards, who finds his way into people's living by magically sliding down through the tight chimney, and leaving presents under a decorated tree for the good little children of the world to enjoy.
Much like our everyday story, the sea beast is a story based on myths and legends passed down through time about a mythical sea creature that parades the wide ocean and wrecks every ship in sight. The only known enemy of these beasts is the Hunters, brave sailors who have dedicated their lives to take down every single sea creature in the open sea. The Inevitableis a ship filled with hunters led by a vicious and commanding Captain Crow(Jared Harris) and his right-hand man, Jacob Holland(Karl Urban). Set out on a mission to rid the sea of these creatures, especially the big red sea beast. All seemed to be going well until they encounter a stowaway, an orphan child, Maisie Brumble(Zaris Angel Hator) who reveals the hidden truth about the sea beast.
I first encountered this movie via a post made by a Twitter account comparing it to another animated movie, Entergalactic. So, in my quest to determine which movie is best, I embarked on a two-hour journey filled with nothing but, sea, sailors, and beasts. The visuals of this movie are very captivating, reminding me of Disney's animated movies, where there is a princess, her therapy animal, and a dashing young prince. The only difference between this Netflix movie and that of Disney is that it is built on the idea of pirates of the Caribbeans but mostly with sea monsters. The plot or storyline is not an Oscar contender but it's good enough, although sometimes it begins to feel like I'm watching a Bible story( Jonah and the fish). The character design is also flawless but is nowhere near that of Moana. The modeled character of this movie appeared lively and in some way ripped off of the Moana movie, especially from the island scene. The big red whale fish in my opinion is well designed in a manner that sings friendly. But I feel it could have been scarier, and probably adding some extra horns projecting from it wouldn't be bad.
My favorite part of the film is when the hunters start to play pirate, sing, talk, and get ready for a ferocious monster battle, they were all epic nostalgia moments. I felt every moment in my bones as though I was experiencing something new. It's been a long time since I have seen any movie about ships, captains, and boats. The last animated movie I watched about pirates, and pirate ships is Sinbad. But it still feels good to feel such a good feeling once again.
Finally, the movie, The sea monster, is an amazing movie having components of respected movies like Sinbad, Moana, and Jonah from the bible. It's entertaining, it's fun and family-friendly. With great animations that in its own way is very spectacular. I look forward to watching this again.
