If you have been following my posts, you know that my music wheel house is pretty broad. I enjoy the modern stuff, but I really feel at home in the eras between the 1950's and the 1980's. With a short dip into the classic jazz era as well, but really, those four decades I listed above are my happy place.
A short time ago, I wrote about a show that is on Amazon Prime called Daisy Jones and the Six. It's based off a book that the author has admitted was loosely inspired by the band Fleetwood Mac. @mrsbozz wanted to read the book before we watched the show, so I obliged her and moved it to our watch list for a later date.
We finally finished the 10 episode season this past weekend and I have to admit, it was fantastic. The basic premise is this rock band forms up in the 1970's, has some huge success, and then falls apart. I know, it's not really that surprising of a plot, but it is really well done.
I think the part that is the most well done is the music. The actors actually took voice lessons and they did all of the music parts themselves. They even learned to play the instruments for the song.
In fact, the music was so good that they actually released an album on Spotify that is the album the fictional band released in the book/show.
The album is called Aurora if you want to look for it on Spotify and that is where I am going to share my three songs from for this #threetunetuesday sponsored by @ablaze. If you like some classic 70's pop/rock, you are going to love this.
"Look at us now (honeycomb)" was one of the first big hits that Daisy Jones and the Six have in the book/show. For various reasons, they end up not playing it very much through the rest of the show. You will have to read the book or watch the show to figure out why.
When I first started listening to this song, I was kind of turned off by how slow and lame it is. What I ended up loving about it is that is just how it starts. If you give it time, it kind of builds like a wave and before you know it, it just rocks out.
Also, if you listen really closely, you can definitely hear the influences that Fleetwood Mac had on the overall feel of this track and the following ones.
I think the people who did the music for the show did a great job of capturing that vibe. What do you think?
For some reason I was really drawn to this song. "The River" starts out with a really cool guitar riff and it has a good driving beat that I think gets you moving in your seat a little if not fully up and dancing around the room.
What I really love about this song though comes at the end. There is a part where Daisy Jones starts singing in counter point(?) to the lead male singer Billy Dunn. I'm not really sure, but it as effect that I find very cool.
As I go back and listen to these songs, I am really amazed at the time and effort they had to have put into them. They are just really well written and put together songs. It's amazing how much thought and effort goes into shows these days.
If you missed it, there are somethings that were different from the book, but @mrsbozz said that the show actually followed really closely to the book. That's not always the case!
My third song is "Let Me Down Easy". This song probably has the most Fleetwood Mac feel of all of the songs in the show to be honest. I mean that opening beat and bass line is smacking of that sound that we all know and love. This song gets a lot of play time in the show. In fact, you might get sick of it after a while.
If that happens, I encourage you to just set it aside for a bit and come back to it. You will likely fall in love with it all over again.
This is one of those songs that really speaks for itself I think. I don't have a ton to write about it other than just how amazing it is. I know it was probably a lot of work just to get these tracks down, but if Daisy Jones and the Six were to ever actually form up and go on the road, you better believe I would be one of the first people to buy tickets.
It actually wouldn't be the first time something like this happened. Didn't Spinal Tap do some actual shows? What about that Nashville show a while ago? @mrsbozz and I personally attended a "Nashville" concert where stars from the television show performed their songs.
Finally, a bonus track for you.
Here she is, the white witch herself, Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac. The supposed inspiration for Daisy Jones and the Six. It's actually funny because you can see some similarities between some of the other members of the band and the members of Fleetwood Mac.
This is probably one of my favorite Fleetwood Mac songs. It's just really good. It has a pretty awesome cameo in one of the seasons of American Horror Story too if you ever watched that show.
Anyway, that's all I have for today. I hope you enjoyed. Did you watch Daisy Jones and the Six? Did you enjoy it? What do you think of the music? Definitely inspired by Fleedwood Mac or did they miss the mark?
Let's talk about it!
