Vintage TV: Stingray

It seems like if you wanted to be a really cool television show in the 80's and you wanted to be guaranteed to have only one or two seasons you needed to have a one word title. That was pretty much a given.

Last week I covered the show Probe that was unfortunately short lived.

This week I am going to talk about the show Stingray. You can check out the Wiki page if you really want to dig into it. What I remember about the show was the fact that it had a really cool car. duh!

Okay, no really, it had a pretty cool premise and I want to talk about that.

The lead character was some sort of investigator or just run of the mill good guy for hire. The twist on that common theme was the fact that he never accepted payment for the jobs he did. Instead, he would ask for a favor. Not just any favor, but a favor at some point in the future. If he solved your problem, you would be required to return that favor no questions asked.

If you think about it, it was a pretty genius concept. You could eventually have a whole network of specialists at your beck and call should you need them.

As I think back on the show there are a lot of aspects that remind me of "Pretender" that was an awesome show. Additionally, reading the Wiki, it almost sounds like the lead character "Ray" had mild superpowers. I don't remember that so much.

For example some of his skills were listed as:

  • Photographic memory
  • Speed reading
  • Ability to slow down his heart rate
  • Hacking
  • Martial arts

I mean, looking back now you can see how it seems a little silly. At the time it was absolutely a blast. I think you can watch the entire two seasons on Amazon if you want to give it a spin.

I highly recommend it. I was really disappointed when this show got cancelled.

Check it out on IMDB here.

I actually did end up finding this on Peacock network. Watched the first two episodes last night. It was funny seeing Gregory Sierra as a villain. I remember him on Barney Miller.

Preposterous and silly though it may be, it was meant to entertain. I kind of remember that show being on and I probably watched it a time or two. In his time, Stephen Cannell put out a lot of shows. Kind of like Wolf studios has done for the past 30 plus years now. I wonder if I can find that on a streaming service somewhere. If it was on CBS it might be on Paramount plus or if it was on NBC, maybe the Peacock network. I'm curious now. !CTP !ALIVE

I remember watching Stingray. I thought it was an Ok show,Nick Mancuso was the lead but he was no Edward Woodward.

I don't remember this show at all and it sounds like something I would have watched. Thanks for sharing.

Ohhhh, I love the Stingray! The car I mean, not the guy. It was the only reason why I used to watch the show haha. I always wanted one. But now I realize that if I had one, two of the kids would have to walk or stay home LOL.

Wait, isn't this almost the same exact concept as the A-Team? Only with them it was a team instead of one guy and a cool van instead of a cool car. And I suspect a lot more guns in their problem solving...

Oh man I remember this show. I wouldn't have if you didn't mention it. I liked it too. Knight Rider was another car I wanted as a young boy. My neighbor bought a Sting Ray and is fixing it up. He does NOT have those super powers you mentioned. 😆

The Duke's was a classic. I probably won't include it in this just because it ran for so long. I am trying to focus on the shows that only lasted maybe a couple of seasons... They did all have a pretty cool car. Do you remember Hardcastle and McCormick? I am going to cover that in a couple of weeks.

Haha I forgot about this show!

They all seemed to have a Trans Am, Ferrari, or some sorta sports car as part of the personna of the protagonist. This one seemed like a copycat derivative of Knight Rider and Magnum PI and Macguyver back then.

I will have to check it out and see if it passes the Dukes of Hazzard test (Still good?)
